Carthage was a prominent ancient civilization located in present-day Tunisia, North Africa. Founded by Phoenician settlers around 814 BC, it grew from a small port city into a powerful empire dominating the western and central Mediterranean Sea. The Carthaginians were known for their advanced maritime skills, extensive trade networks, and the legendary military commander Hannibal during the Punic Wars. Despite its prosperity and influence, Carthage was ultimately destroyed by the Roman Republic in 146 BC after a series of conflicts known as the Punic Wars. The Romans later rebuilt Carthage, which continued to play a significant role in the ancient world until its fall during the Vandal invasions.
