Well that Class 52 @ 1.35 is powered by a pair of German Maybach MD 655's... But in the main these are loco's on preserved lines which are life expired and kept running by dedicated enthusiasts. Some of the class 37's (the first one) are still in service and much cleaner, and the one @2.22 is an Italian Sulzer..

pkrieter to answer your question yes clagging means smoke i think, and the engine your refering to is the deltic, it was basically the highspeed train of its day untill the Hst's came out, reason its got a high RPM is because its got 2 engines. lovely engine to drive i might add.

When the "deltic" loco was introduced, it was by far the most powerfull diesel loco in the world, at 3,300hp. it has 2x18 cylinder 2 stroke engines. Check out the YT video called "deltic locomotive diesel engine moving parts" to see a really cool animation

Never did like Deltics, they stunk when revved but the burnt oil smoke plus unburnt fuel is par for the course. They were always like that. As for the rest, cold engines on the EE types, so incomplete combustion. That will ease when they warm through. 1041 is stripped for a major overhaul. As for the Sulzer types, rich running.
