Thank you for doing the review. The main design goal for my products is transparency. Based on your findings (per part 2 of the review on Patreon) I believe that this is exactly what the device is doing when you say "they do not stand out" and that there is no "coloration".

BUT WHAT ABOUT LONG TERM PERFORMANCE? Capacitor selectIon and performance is critical in the use of a good sounding Class D amplifier. Unfortunately, Class D amps use many capacitors and they are one of the most degrading components in any amplifier, that is why most older amps need to be recapped. Good Luck!

The issue with absolutes is they are never true but they are always based upon a hint of truth. Not all class D amps suck but the majority of amps that do suck are class D. Also in general pantheon it's Tubes/Class A > Class A/B > Class D which is a generalization. Now within those classes you've got an entire stratosphere of price classes, brands, and country of origin. You've got manufacturers that lie or at least skirt the truth on if it's a true class A or Class a/b hybrid and if a hybrid how much power do you get in pure class A. It becomes very difficult to dissect the misinformation from the industry, the last of transparency of measurements/benchmarks from manufacturers, and even the individual personal bias of reviewers or audiophiles sites/mags (either do to their own tastes and preferences or financial incentives). In general to maneuver this hobby you either have to find a set of reviewers that you trust or have extremely deep pockets and go on a shopping/selling spree of items.

Class D does not suck. In fact, it does a lot right sound wise. One example is bass control which it does very well. They have gotten much better over the years. To the point that I could be happy living with a Class D amp in my system. However, I have not found an equivalently priced Class D amp that I preferred over its Class A or Class AB rivals. IMO they still sound the best. Physically, Class D counters with smaller packaging, lighter weight, lower temperatures, and less energy consumption. It's nice to have choices.

Hey Ron! Class D dosn’t suck! I had a “WOW” moment recently and I have only had a handful of those in my life of listening to music. One of those “WOW” moments was when you exposed me to the open back Sapphires and I ended up getting a pair. The second “WOW” moment was when I recently upgraded my Yamaha AVR to a NAD T778. What made me go WOW with the NAD is that it is the ONLY amp that I have ever heard in my life that gives you OLED monitor level blacks and is completely neutral - as in it doesn’t add anything or take anything away from the music. This was very subtle at first and took a period of listening to hear this but it but when it hit me what was happening it brought tears to my eyes. I think it might have something to do with the new Eigentakt technology like are also in the M33 stereo amp. But there is NO distortion on this amp even at high volume levels and when the music stops you hear TOTAL SILENCE. That was a first for me as every other amp I have ever heard in my life had some level of noticeable distortion and some coloration. The NAD has none! An NAD competitor to this orchard audio amp would be the NAD C298 which has the Eigentakt technology and I think would blow your mind.

Ron: Nice work! I love your reviews, especially with Danny (GR). I believe the GaN silicon devices really make HiFi sense. They are X10 faster than any standard silicon in switching specs. Many of the amps are switching 2-3 times faster than other class D amps. The higher the frequency, the easier it is to filter out the carrier and harmonics, with smaller hi quality parts. The amps specs. show excellent results. The higher prices for a simpler board real-estate is due to high cost GaN transistors and a worthy market price because of the pristine sound. From what I have researched, this company's fully balanced amps leave the rest in the dust. I want to hear one! Yeah!🎶🎧

I run two Starkrimson Ultra monoblocks with an Atma-Sphere MP-3 preamp driving Spatial Sapphire speakers. The sound is extremely detailed, dynamic, and very satisfying. I forget how good it sounds until I hear other systems. That said, when I was evaluating the Ultra, I found the high frequencies to be overly dry and have a slight ringing driving the Spatials at 8ohms (common class D criticisms). Using Paul Speltz’s Autoformers (the AntiCables guy), I lowered the impedance to 4ohms and got rid of the problem. Leo confirmed that doing so attenuates the high end. I can't imagine a better sound for the money. My opinion of class D is that it certainly rivals other topologies. After a certain point, "better" is highly subjective. It comes down to tradeoffs between one technology and another and one's preference of tradeoff. Coming from the class A OTL world, it took me a while to grow accustom to the Ultras, but now it is my preference, the level of detail being the overriding factor.

There are a lot of generalizations pertaining to audio. If I had to pick one field of any in the world where so much wrong is said; it would be audio by far. No, not all Class D amps sound alike. Was there a time when they did? New technology always takes time to improve to what it's potential is. I saw compact disc players in 1983. The first one I actually liked the sound of wasn't until 1988. Record albums before it; look how many years they took to get near perfection. The noisy 78's. Why were they so noisy? Well let's see...gee that's a hard one....Oh I know, they were played with a "PIN"! You didn't expect those to not wear out. I just bought a great 78 record last week. I need to replace it now. I would have to really hear a Class D amp at length on a wide variety of material. Some say regular transistor amps haven't really been perfected yet. Of the more advanced audiophiles, you would be surprised how many of them use tube amps. It may even be most of them. To their ears the comparatively thin edgy sound of transistor amps do not do a musical impersonation better than tubes; and that includes many musicians who certainly know what their instruments sound like. It's amazing how many people accuse tube amps of adding false warmth to the sound. Did they ever sit down and play a grand piano and hear all the resounding warmth the real instrument makes? They might be pointing a finger at the wrong offender. Let's put it that way. Musicians can hear how stingy solid state is with warmth... Is grain, lack of smoothness, imparting a false edge to instruments, thinness and lack of warmth and body, and seriously curtailing 3D spatiality ACCURATE? At least the best solid state gear is not too bad in those ways. Lot of bad advice in audio from people with let's say non-advanced perception. I think Class D should be welcomed and given a chance. If for no other reason than other class of solid state amps have rarely achieved near perfection.

It's not that class D sucks... we could all probably live with one... but the ones of us who actually know how class D works, and what it does to the signal... will always proclaim it sucks because it will always be an approximation of the original content by the inherent operation of how it works, and the harmonics class D introduces. That said, I bought a class D because I have a solar house, and need efficiency... so it suits what we need... for where it is needed. It's nice to have options.

A properly designed class d does not introduce harmonics. For example look at the Starkrimson Mono amps, at 10W output at 1kHz the THD is -110dB or (0.0003%). In other words, it is 99.9997% accurate. There is no amp that achieves 100% accuracy.

Heck, i couldn't even see your eyeballs scanning any type of read-out when you mentioned all the different long & complicated specs of the Dac! Class'D seems to be getting much nearer to perfection with GaN technology, ive noticed from hearing various trusted reviewers opinions of the sound of Class D amps now using GaN technology. They'll always be differences because of good, bad implimentation as is normal. But we can all still argue about Class-D being best with switching PSU's or with big torroid-trannied linear power supplies, if we want to. I dont believe this global warming 'thing' has really changed any serious hi-fi music lovers amp choice, turn some lights off or your freezer down to equalise (i.e. if you believe in G.W. & think yer next class A/AB amp might just be the straw that brakes the back of our world's climate & plunges us into Dante's Inferno

I think modern class d integrated circuit amps are very very good (designs from the last 5 years). For the most part that's been driven by trying to get beefy output from single lithium cells and to make the best use of limited battery capacity, that's forced IC designers to get on top of filtering and designs that have to be matched to the speakers. Now you can have a 100W amp running from a battery source who's frequency response is flatter than even the best discrete designs of yesterday, requires no heatsink, is immune from temperature drift, has no hiss and the whole thing is tiny as a USB stick. I wouldn't expect them to enter audiophile territory for the same reason people still argue one digital cable sounds different to another, clearly it doesn't, but it does subjectively when you think or expect it does. You can either live in a world where you think that things should be the way they were when you were younger but just made using the finest components or concede there are alternatives.

Biggest disadvantage with 'the D' - it can only get better! i.e; Today's best D's you have given your hard-earned to will likely be bested by tomorrows. (Though Rowland/PS show there is 'mileage' in ICE). Some things I like about D; for classical - nil hiss/hum&black background, which adds a realism to acoustic instruments (not bested by equiv price A/B), and the ability to take on a bigger proportion of the characteristics you place in front (e.g. tubes). And maybe the latter counters obsolescence to some degree. Opinionated bit; (note words 2&3!) I suspect sometimes 'D bashing' is borne from listening to primarily music with 'amplified' vocals (i.e. vox unnaturally louder than their backing). Most rock/pop vocals are thin/undeveloped (yes they are!) and do indeed benefit from A-A/B-Tube characteristics/strengths.

It is a matter of choice, taste, and subjective listening; therefore, what you like . . . you like. About a year back I got a good deal on a used pair of PS Audio m700 amps, they rep[laced my modified Haffler d220. PS Audio put a lot of effort into getting those amps sound right and IMO they did a fine job. A bargain basement class D can sound very dry and a little shrill but a well thought out class D can have a sweet sound.

dell177 Quote from the founder & owner - "Paul McGowan told me that the voicing of the M700 involved comparisons with PS Audio's flagship amplifier, the BHK Signature 300, whose input circuitry uses tubes." Definite no go if you want a accurate transparent sound without any colouration. Without the source material playing getting artificially manipulated. But if you enjoy a inaccurate sound of music instruments voices then fair enough 👍🏾

I personally just haven’t had the same amount of experience with Class D as I have with Class A or A/B, but I do know Class D is no longer a dirty word in the world of HiFi. Also, before immediately putting down an amplifier (or any piece of gear for that matter) based on it’s topology or Class rating, I think people should keep an open mind towards things until they’ve tried it and heard it in their systems. Maybe it’s exactly the thing you’ve been looking for. Thanks, Ron. Another great review, buddy! 👍🎶🔊🙂

@RetroTECHero Using cheap materials in any piece of HiFi gear regardless of Class or topology is gonna be detrimental to the end result.

But someone has to go to market first and offer products to early adopters. That is how it's always been done. The fine tuning in development follows on.

Its good to see the consumers/reviewers are starting to catch up to reality! The only real criticism I have of these amps, is the relatively low power rating - its sort of surprising to me for a Class D monoblock to have under 200 watts.

Check out the Purifi amps, VTV has mono blocs for about 600 each. Bench test 185 @ 8 and about 300 @ 4 ohms at ASR. They are so clean that they seem more powerful.

Hi thanks a lot for the very interesting video I still do not understand if the key for sound is in the power supply or the actual amplifying circuits. There must be a bigger difference maybe between linear and switching mode power supplies ? very interesting field Thanks a lot again. Kind regards, gino

This is not a very simple answer. It really depends on the AMP design. If the amplifier has a very good power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) then the power supply will have very little to no effect on the amplifier. The higher the PSRR the less effect the power supply has. In the case of my BOSC amplifiers (these are also used inside the Starkrimson Integrated) the PSRR is very good so the performance of the amplifier is the same with switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) as it is with linear power supplies (LPS). P.S. All of my posted measurements and test results on the website are done with the provided SMPS.

@@OrchardAudio Hi thank you so much for your very kind and valuable reply I understand this PSRR parameter is very important and maybe wrongly overlooked by others For instance i understand no feedback designs that have gained a certain popularity have a very poor PSRR and so they are heavily dependent from the power supply quality (i.e. noise) Congratulations for your achievements Kind regards, gino

specs on website do not mention power draw, how much power is used at 1 watt music played back for example.

This is a measurement I have not done yet. I can tell you that the DAC takes 2W at idle and the amps take 2.2W to idle for each channel. This is with a DC input. You also have to take into account the conversion efficiency of the AC/DC converters inside the amplifier. So I would say Idling is around 7-9W. Beyond that, the AMPs are over 95% efficient so at 1Wpc output you are looking at about 10-12W from the AC outlet.

@@OrchardAudio the GaN part doing its work here, looks like the next big thing in class d amplification. about 11watts for an stereo amps with dac in impressively low. I just keep an eye on these idle or quiescent power draw numbers, seen some hypex power amps draw 30 watts doing nothing. dont want that.

The best complement about class D you can say is that it does not suck... Great success indeed :-) I am waiting for GaN technology in class A solid state to test out however. Until then I stay with my class A, DHT 845 Triode monoblocks. The magical, addicting sound of tubes at the end od the musical chain (with higher efficiency speakers) is not replaceable because you can not replace fenomenal interaction between tube amp and the speakers. Some people try to achieve this magic by class D, class A/B amp and tube preamp or / and tube source but this is wrong way IMO.
