I agree. My only criticism would be that the video run times could be cut by 75-80% were there not so much repetition. The are pause and rewind buttons that viewers can use if they miss something. No offense. I have trained military instructors. This is one of the biggest issues they have had with moving from the floor/podium to the camera/distance learning.

In summary, System Restore if possible--as soon as possible. Reset Internet Explorer. Go into safe-mode and disable startup programs. Then CCleaner and defrag. Get special software to completely remove old antiviruses like Norton, since they mess up windows settings. Microsoft security essentials antivirus and "Spybot Search and Destroy" antimalware/spyware(Disable "Registry Guards" (Spybot's TeaTimer)). You can run both scans at the same time. Do FULL scans. Also, update all applications. If this does not fix the PC try Malwarebytes and Combofix (Only download Combofix from BleepingComputer.com, everywhere else is a piece of spyware). After all of this, and the virus is still there, google the remaining problems. If it's an annoyance, just re-install windows and get Microsoft security essentials antivirus and "Spybot Search and Destroy" antimalware/spyware.

I'm sorry but I am not agree about you said that if you are an IT consultant, wipe out and reload the OS. That is my job, and my clients pay me for solving their problems. Ok, why am I not agree? because when you wipe out and reload, the client always says "where is my x program?", "I had an icon here to open my common excel sheets", "where is the kid painting program my son opens..my brother installed it 3 years ago"... etc. Got my point? I rather prefer fix the problem by removing the virus and triple check it is not there anymore..anyways...just saying! :)

I entirely disagree, viruses/spyware are generally simple to remove even by hand. A wipe is rarely needed. Rootkits are a different story, but there are usually programs to remove most known rootkits pretty efficiently. Safemode unfortunately has some issues with uninstalling some junkware apps. So you'll definitely need to load up normal mode from time to time. Unless you like pointlessly uninstalling them by hand... then good luck lol. Generally the programs you can't uninstall in either mode are malware. If we are talking about business level, wipe wipe wipe though.

IMO, when multiple infections are cleaned, there may be damaged system files, open doors for more infections, corrupted registry settings, etc., iow, an invasion was thwarted and it probably resulted in some destruction that can only be repaired by reinstalling the system. Even some of the user data may be corrupted. This is why you can't guarantee a clean running system after disinfection. The average user should focus on backup and re-installation, then changes in behavior and/or av software.

Computers have become too complicated. Most people just want them to operate so they can send emails, surf the internet, buy something, pay some bills etc. When is somebody going to build a simple to use computer that does not allow viruses to enter? Why are viruses allowed to enter your computer. Why aren't viruses stopped before they enter your computer?

Sounds like what you want is any computer you can get a Best Buy - whether it is Windows, Macintosh, Chromebook, or Ubuntu. It's simple really, just don't install anything that isn't already on it (contrary to what some people will say to up their nerd cred, you don't need Firefox or Chrome, Internet Explorer and Safari are just fine so long as you leave the update settings on their defaults). And as the other commenters have said, if the computer is turned on, it can get a virus - there are actually devices that use magnets to insert virus instructions into computers that aren't even connected to the internet.

Before you learned to drive a car, you needed a permit, know how to answer the questions and get familiar with the happenings of the road, then you bought auto insurance to prepare for the unexpected.(Rudimentary comparison). Having a computer and using the internet is far more dangerous, b/c people like you are too damn trusting. While a computer (with particular programs) is artificial intelligence, people sometimes render themselves as less intelligent. Human intelligence can exploit IT and be more productive in all facets of life and business. However, there are some who are too damn lazy to realize there shortcomings and just whine.

having 2 firewalls is resource intensive and not needed, just make sure you have 1 and its properly configured. But a firewall wont matter much if the virus is running under admin credentials as it will simply add its own rule. Also i find the best is AVAST anti virus, better than bulky AVG. Also can you explain "bad system registry"

Yeah but it can also change MBR and API settings. In that case you would need something like TDSS and maybe Hitman pro. I know Malwarebytes has an anti rootkit function that can be downloaded but it is still in beta and people who can make things like MBR bootkits will certainly find more ways around most security software.

Some viruses to things directly like try to install to the boot sector. This can create and error in the NTFS file system if the creator of the virus makes a mistake. A bad sector on the drive can also corrupt the file system so you can't assume a virus did it. I you install something like GRUB to make the machine multi-boot some of the "boot sector infecter" viruses get confused and cant plug themselves into the drive.

I love your videos Eli but I think this one was a little lacking.. there are a number of reasons you'd want to clean malware vs doing a system wipe. I won't get into all of them, but there could be licensed software the user doesn't have their key for, or software that is married to OS that can't be transferred to a new install, or if the user has important files but was using hard drive encryption, or ransomware had encrypted those files.. As to your tutorial, you didn't really go into detail about a number of vital things, and you keep using the term "Virus" instead of "Malware". 'Mal' literally means 'Bad' in many languages, so the translation is literally Badware. The terms Virus and Malware are not interchangeable. That's like calling every car a Buick. Virus is one type of malware, which is designed to self-replicate on the infected machine. There are also Scareware/Rogues, which are the types that attempt to trick you into paying the malware author to remove the infection they installed. And there are other fun terms like Ransomware, Worms, Trojans, Rootkits, and Botnets. Just a terminology nitpick. Here are areas I felt you could provide more coverage on: 1. Services - How to discover, disable and delete malicious services 2. Group Policy and Local Security Policy - How it can be used to harden a PC against infection, or how it can be used by malware to thwart removal attempts 3. Infected or corrupted System Restore - Generally you do NOT want to attempt to run System Restore on an infected PC. In fact you should delete previous recovery points as part of the cleaning process. 4. Safe Mode - It's not a kill-all solution. Safe Mode can be compromised or disabled. Malware can alter the registry to allow itself to run in Safe Mode, as well as subvert the system files that give Safe Mode its layer of isolation to begin with. 5. Drivers - Drivers are a common piece of many malware payloads because they grant the malware SYSTEM rights. 6. Subverted system files - Malware isn't always about installing a malicious application. Malware can replace critical system files, which will further aid in its ability to evade detection and lock down the system from attempts to clean it. Standard removal techniques won't necessarily work against malware that has heavily subverted the OS. 7. Self-healing - Apart from its ability to hide from detection, and subvert the OS, and disable or cripple any security software already installed, or block the installation or scan or download of most popular removal tools, malware such as rootkits have a self-healing component that allows it to regenerate when deleted. It hides in several places and as long as enough pieces of it remain, it can restore the rest after a reboot. Safe mode or not... 8. Proxies, host file hijacking, DNS poisoning, browser profile hijacking and other redirection techniques. 9. You shouldn't advocate the use of ComboFix to untrained persons without explaining its dangers or proper use. ComboFix is also not a kill-all. It is actually a scripting tool that has many built-in autoupdating features that can do things such as repair subverted system files. It can ALSO BREAK the Winsock/LSP stack on a heavily infected PC, rendering it unable to connect to the internet! This will strand most novice users who only brought a thumb drive with their favorite scanner tools. Everyone working on infected machines should know how to repair the network stack and system files on a PC, and have tools with them to do so. 10. Malware, like any other program on your PC, can connect to the internet and update itself! And it does check for updates, every few minutes! It can download new features to torment your hard drive or break the newest, shiniest removal tools you could have used against it. All that being said, you made some great points, such as running Windows Update as soon as the PC is cleaned up, or that any one particular removal tool will not consistently save the day. I'm not trying to hate on the content of the video; rather pointing at that the title is misleading as you didn't really go into detail on the actual cleanup process. You pretty much said "Use ComboFix and pray for the best". I've seen 40 something malware types that completely freeze up ComboFix, repair itself, and then block ComboFix from running again. I think you should redo this video if your purpose is really to give people a one-up (just a suggestion and I apologize for being so critical).

***** Your presumptions on Apple are all opinion based. The reason why Apple doesn't get viruses is some magical program; it's because such a small percentage of the world runs on MAC OS's. It's more efficient to write a virus that we'll attack three billion computers than one that we'll attack 100 million (these numbers aren't accurate, obviously). I would also like to point out that Apple flat out doubles and triples the prices of their computers. A MacBook Pro is NOT worth $1700 yet that is about where they start. Try running Linux. It's free, relatively virus free, and is community supported...which means it can do almost anything.

you need to clean your pc? first thing to get is auslogics defragment software then defrag your system. then go to run>%temp%>delete all files. then go to run>Prefetch> delete all files. then go to your memory disk>right click> go to properties> disk cleanup> check everything to clean> clean.

Running tools like Process Explorer and Process Monitor are good tools that I always use. All from Sysinternals/Microsoft. Process Monitor can be used to monitor the system and you can sometimes spot the virus kick off and where its going.

Don't need unlocker anymore. You can use Sysinternals from Microsoft Process Explorer. Does the same think as unlocker regarding unlocking locked files. Unlocker maybe easier to use though.

Some viruses can stick around even after a wipe and fresh install.

Unlikely. Viruses like this are very rare, and in most of the cases where this does happen, it corrupts the system restore partition.

Hey Eli isn't Microsoft Security Essentials crap? I heard it was benchmarked as being a really bad program and wasn't really being updated anymore. I usually use AVG along with Malwarebytes and CCleaner.
