How to clean the gunk out of your chair wheels so they will run smoothly. SOATMON Blog page: www.Soatmon.com SOATMON Amazon Store: www.amazon.com/shop/soatmon
Thanks, this is a good tip. I constantly do these hidden little things around the house for my wife as well. She's real big on replacing rather than repairing...she likes shopping...so I just never things get to the point that they're truly broken.

You are going to cut your thigh this way. They spring back. Use a leg pad. Mine are well and truly stuck. Herman Miller Mirra Chair - fantastic chair but these wheels are stuck. I read one of the comments that said to boil them, so I did. Presto! Popped open with two wrenches. Heat water to boil, lower heat to simmer, pop in all the wheels, stir a bit, then turn off heat and leave them covered as you take out one by one and pop open. Clean with scissors, exacto knife, scraper, soap up with toothbrush. I also use a dental steel pick to get into edges. Soap, rinse, dry, oil with silicone oil and snap back in. Very nice. BOILING THEM IS KEY TO STUBBORN WHEELS. It loosens the dirt and grime and expands the plastic. This was an excellent tip from readers. Many thanks folks. These comments are the best.

That was a good I had never taken a close look at the casters....will now. I just went back to an old video of yours on how to clean terminals of toys and the like. I has a camera of all things where the battery leaked and it wasn't an old battery either. It is good to be able to go back and check out the old ones too. Thank you for all you do.

Have had the very same issue. My solution was to go the big box and buy some 3" rubber casters for replacement - they roll so much smoother on all floors. As a bonus, they are heavy duty and easier to maintain and lube. Thanks again for all your content.

I--as do all those who have spoken before--really do appreciate the information and the manner in which you teach. Now that I'm old I am also crotchety, and everything irritates me; not the least of which is corporate lack of consideration for the enduser--or the reuser, like me--who must be able to repair and replace parts of their products.

I hear you. I have less and less patience with the junk made today. It is not because you are old, but you lived in a time of less Chinese made junk. I bought a very pricey Herman Miller chair, striving for quality, and the caster wheels cannot be taken apart!!! So I have to buy new wheels. Well, not from them anymore. That ship sailed. New cheap casters I can take apart. So frustrated with HM.

I did the same thing . Another video showed using two crow bars to get them to pop off. My engineer friend suggested to pull the wheels and boil them. The heat soften them and the wheels popped off easily with the screwdrivers!!!

Very good idea!!!! I will try this. Also the crowbars. Harbor Freight sells small nail puller crow bars, ideal. I tried two wrenches but they slip off.

Hey, grateful for this advice. I have one like this and one of the two tiny wheels on one of the casters keeps popping off. what can I do to stop this? the metal tube in the middle is smooth idk if it isn't supposed to be like that.

I'm not sure, once they fail you usually have to replace them. Sounds like the socket may be worn out.

The channel pliers was a new tip. Or maybe a G clamp? My only concern is - how many times can you do this before the plastic breaks, or holes become so loose they fall out? I have a big long-haired dog - there's fur *daily* !
@SoatMon

C-clamp would be a great option. I don't know how many times you could do it but I bet they would wear out.

Solution for dog hair: 1. Get a Roomba iRobot vacuum for dog hair on floors/carpets. 2. Feed dog: MSM 1/3 tsp daily in food + 2 squirts of Iceland Pure Sardine Anchovy Fish Oil (keep in fridge), Carrots, Squash cooked, Gelatine and raw beef bones, turkey necks, some B complex vitamins (Nutritional Yeast). Now his hair will shed less and stay on him longer.

Not sure that 3-in-one oil is your best option for this. It's likely to degrade the plastic wheel in short order.

Sandpaper or flat knife - scrape them off. Sanding is best. Gently so you keep the circular shape.
