Just discovered your channel. This was a really interesting look at the subject. I know when my nan was growing up and as a young woman during the inter-war years, the vicar and his wife were a constant steady presence. There were services every week, Sunday School, church outings, fetes etc. I think part of the love of this literature is harking back to a quieter, and simpler time.

Top-notch episode! Many modern readers don’t appreciate the importance of the church in village life, and the influence of Christianity on the assumed values of the culture.

For sure - part of reading 100-year-old fiction is trying to understand what life was like when it was written, I think.

I wonder where the 12th century Brother Cadfael in the time of the first English civil war between King Stephen and the Empress Matilda would fit?

Thank you for a thoughtful look at a phenomenon that I guess I have always taken for granted. As for the religiously-inclined writers, I always found Chesterton a bit smug about his religious faith -- disagreeable at any time, more so in a literary mystery. At least that's my taste.

Your podcast are wonderful. I am not sure why you blast the music so loud at the beginning and the end. I jump out of my seat it scares me and hurts my ears.
