You can clearly see how the cf clouser has a backward "lean", bc there is nothing to counter balance the eyes. Bucktail is bouyant, so it will balance the fly. I love me some craft fur, so I employ a few work arounds to fix this leaning issue. The simplest one is to tie it on a 60° jig hook. If you need or want to use a standard streamer hook, you can wrap a bit of craft foam toward the rear of the hook right after you tie in ur bottom clump of fur. I always wrap the foam up with a few strands of flashabou, so it doesnt matter what color of foam used. The third thing I do is use BOTH. Tie in about half the amount of bucktail you normally would use, then cover it with a bit of cf of the same color! You get the structural and bouyancy benefits of bucktail coupled with the action and "breathability" of craft fur! This is one of my favorite flies for smallmouth and white bass in my local river. I NORMALLY will match the colors between the two, but there are so many cool color combinations to play with! I will recommend that you always use a DARKER color for the bucktail underneath to create a more realistic dimension of depth to ur clouser. The clouser continues to stand the test of time as perhaps the best streamer pattern across the board for all species. I cant believe I REFUSED to try them until about 6 years ago, and Ive been fly fishing for almost 20 years. I just was infatuated with big fat articulated streamers, which I still DO LOVE, but if all else fails, throw a size 4 clouser in chartreuse/white. If that doesnt get bit, fly selection is not the issue!

Thanks for this video Tim - under water footage is always educational! I tank-test all my patterns to see how they fish so I know in advance how they are going to behave in the river. For me, it is not a bucktail/craft fur choice as I typically use both in the same fly. I use bucktail to control the streamers attitude in the water and define its basic form and then add craft fur, soft fur (like fox) or feather (marabou, ostrich) with some flash to fill out the form with movement, translucency and glitter to represent the local baitfish. Got Bob Popovich's book "Flye Design" last winter and it has been a real inspiration for tying bucktails with beautiful form an movement - this past summer the bass, pike and walleye were real enthusiastic about them! Cheers! Hank

Craft fur for still waters and buck tail for moving waters.

Not disagreeing, I just do the opposite. Maybe it's the way I tie, but I find craft fur gets fouled a lot easier in current. Plus I like the way bucktail (bc its a buoyant material) balances the rear of the fly. You can really see it in this video. The craft fur clouser kinda leans back bc there is nothing to counter balance the eyes. Jmo.

@@Nubenhooferif craft fur gets fouled easier in moving water doesn’t it logically follow that you use it more in Stillwater ? Lol

Thanks to everyone for your comments, lots of good stuff. One of my main reasons to start tying Clousers with craft fur was durability, particularly for bluefish. Even a little snapper blue can slice off a huge chunk of bucktail or worse cut the material that goes over top of the dumbbell eyes rendering the fly all but useless. The craft fur definitely holds up better although it often needs to be untangled. I, like many of you, think the bucktail does look better underwater and moving. I'll most likely carry both versions going forward.

The craft fur had the movement of a leech to me. But what do I know. I prefer the bucktail for the minnow imitation👍 Nice underwater footage Tim👊

This is very cool footage, thanks! It depends on what forage I am imitating. I really like the way that bucktail maintains its shape through the jigging motion and would use that material if I'm imitating a baitfish. If I am looking for a crawdad fly (with a different color scheme obviously), I like the movement of the craft fur and would bounce it on the bottom.

Bucktail for sure. I like the color scheme and it is an effective combination. This one in particular with the colors reminds me of an articulated pattern by Kelly Gallop. (Barely Legal) It is a large fish magnet. Hope you are well keep up the good work. Good video.

Nice video. The craft fur is not as appealing as the bucktail, at least to me, but I'm not a fish. The Krystal Flash looks longer on the cfc and undulates with the craft fur but doesn't hold the hook up in the back, looks unnatural like it swims head up at a 45° angle. The bucktail looks more natural to me, more balanced swimming attitude and profile. I think it provides lift to the rear of the hook because of it's resistance and bulk. Maybe the flash could be a bit longer for more undulation. Tim is that the same craft fur Clouser you tied in a previous video, the one that looked liked a Thunder Creek? I'd choose Bucktail but work on the craft fur. Thanks Tim.

I agree with you on the swimming attitude and find the bucktail version more appealing. But this is likely to change with either a faster retrieve or more current. And the more I look at the craft fur one with its nose pointed up, the more I think it behaves like a wounded baitfish which I'd guess predator species would key in on (easier meal). I probably shouldn't shoot underwater video of flies as it always seems to generate more questions than answers. Plus, it usually kinda shatters long held illusions I'd rather hang on to. Thanks for your input Joe.

tightlinevideo Please keep doing underwater vids. The Deceiver one was also a real eye opener, as well as the tying in of the feathers. The fish usually answer the questions. And you can always take an aspirin for the headaches, or just go fishing! I'd keep using both materials too, lots of intelligent comments here Tim, all a credit to your work. Please keep it up, and many thanks!

I don't know... Seems like the craft fur was fouled to the left side of the fly. Plus the flash seemed to be a little long. I also tend to go a little heavy on the craft fur Clouser because it is so thin. I have yet to catch a trout on a Clouser in Georgia, but they are deadly anywhere there is bass feeding on shad... Whether it be large mouth, spots, or striper.

Excellent point. But, I think virtually all baitfish move their tails from side to side rather than up and down as both flies do in the video. But then again Clousers absolutely work and what sets them apart from other patterns is their motion. Now I've got a headache, but thanks for your input.

If I was fishing current then go with the buck tail and use the craft fur for stagnant bodies of water if you want more action with less movement of the fly. Thats my strat.

Bucktail will out perform any other material if you tie it right. If you use fine wavy hair and tie it more sparse it will give more room for the water to flow through the fibers and the waviness to the fibers give it a fuller profile

Craft fur has two tendencies which I don't care for. 1. Left in a tackle tote with it's brothers, it tends to tangle up, sort of intermeshes, also the fur tends to tangle even, only with itself. An obvious solution is to secure each item in foam., or whatever. 2.When fishing close to/on a mud bottom, dirt collects in the fur .Although this may not be a detriment, I don't like it. Craft fur, left long, does tend to have more action, however many times amlore subtle action seems to be the drawing card. For these reasons, I prefer bucktail.
