The variable is stratified naturally into clusters. Thats why it is a cluster sample. Also in cluster sampling you may choose all your clusters and then take with SRS the same amount of people from each cluster like stratified BUT even if the clusters are heterogenous. So it is basically a more convinient stratified sample.

So if there was a hotel with 30 floors and I numbered them 1-30 and randomly selected 5 floors and surveyed the people on those floors, would that be a cluster sample?? Where as if I separated them by a similar characteristic like gender, and randomly selected a certain amount from both groups making that a stratified sample?
@maysterchief
11 жыл бұрын
If you randomly select 5 of the floors and survey everyone on those floors, it would be a cluster sample. If you randomly select a few from every floor that would be an example of a stratified sample. Also, your example of grouping by gender, then randomly choosing a few from each gender is also stratified.

I would have to disagree with your statement that after you randomly select a few floors, that you then have have to survey everyone on those particular floors! No, you would take a sample from these selected floors (clusters). Think about a hotel with a million people on each floor!! :P Don't think the tax payer would be very happy with you!! @@maysterchief

Is either I've forgotten or something is wrong here! For me, bias has already been introduced by neglecting the other two clusters and picking the Main Street as Sample.... Cluster sampling requires that certain percentage of respondents be taken from each cluster, not like what I was watching here..... Anyway, 👍🏾 for the effort

Let's make Canada our country. The population for this example would be all pregnant women in Canada over a certain period of time. (It may take a while to get a sample size of 1200). For a cluster sample you could randomly choose 10 hospitals in Canada and observe the birth wieght of the next 120 babies in each of those 10 hospitals.

two stage is when you would decide to go even further and create sub-clusters of the cluster you already chose with srs. so now he would take let's say cluster two and divide it up even more.

Hello Steve, Great video, it helped me make sense of a lot of things I have been reading. I have question if you dont mind. Let us suppose I am working on a population of 8000, lets say international students in a given country. The sample size would have to be around 370. Lets say i want to explore the impact of certain variables on the exprience of these students. would it correct if i divided the population into groups, male Vs female, low social status Vs high social status, students in public Vs students in private universities.
@stevemays5610

Mohammed, If you wanted to explore the impact of a certain variable, I would probably go with Stratified Sampling. I have a video on stratified sampling as well. This way you could group (aka stratify) by gender and then choose a sample of about 185 from each strata.
