Totally agree man... they were in their own league. They had 9 UK number ones, and 19 songs on the top ten.

True but you forgot to add they had 10 number 1 albums in the UK. An unrivalled achievement for a band that commercially lasted for 8 years ''74 to ''82. Apart from the Beatles, there's no other pop artistes who broke ABBA's record achievements that didn't work for more than 20 years to beat them.

I love the first verse. So many details, nuances and colours in Frida's delivery. Her second 'Fernandoooo' is iconic. Her original Swedish solo version of the song was on her second solo record, 'Frida Ensam' from 1975, which is absolutely brilliant.

I think all those technical nuances with the layering of the music, voices etc is the magic that is ABBA and what has been my love affair of over 48yrs now. I am almost 62 and I will never tire of them.

Welcome back 😀 ABBA's version of Fernando is from 1976 and the original version sung by Frida alone in Swedish is from 1975. You should take a listen to her version if you haven't. 😍 They also recorded it in Spanish and there is even a German version sung by Lena Andersson.

A true ABBA fan knows, enjoys, and appreciates Benny and Bjorn's trademark layering. They are our generation's Roger and Hammerstein. Their music is timeless and wonderful to see new generations (and current ones now taking notice) discover and get drawn to it

First comment here! so happy to see you again with ABBA songs "Fernando" (1976) is a soft ballad, so nice and beautiful The best for meis the beauty of their vocal harmonies, very soft at the whisper level but at a level of perfection, that explodes in a magic chorus I have compared it to "Chiquitita" (1979) because both songs have similarities and contrasts Both have the title in Spanish, and was recorded in spanish too (to the album in spanish "Gracias por la Música" In 1980) Both are pop ballads with an initial verse sung alone and from the second chorus in duet, with a very catchy and popular chorus (in my country Argentina are songs that we would sing in a circle of friends, because we all know their lyrics) both videos show contrasts: fire or snow, night or day They were both very most worldwide successful, only behind "Dancing Queen" ABBA had already recorded "Dancing Queen" and it came from the success of "Mamma Mía" It was the manager who convinced them to record "Fernando" so as not to repeat the style (Frida had done it before in 1975 on her solo album in Swedish and it was a success, but with lyrics of a lovesong, and these to ABBA is a friendship story about mexican soldiers) The manager was right and everything was a success, one after another in that year 1976, with three singles #1 consecutives in UK Mamma Mía (2 weeks) Fernando (4 weeks) Dancing Queen (6 weeks) This variety of options had different results in each country. "Fernando" was a colossal success in Australia (14 weeks at #1 surpassed the "Hey Jude" mark) and 7 weeks at #1 in Germany (same with S.O.S. before) "Dancing Queen" was 14 weeks #1 in Sweden and 6 weeks #1 in the U.K.and 8 weeks #1 in Australia Both were #1 in the U.S. but in various rankings: "Dancing Queen" on the Billboard and "Fernando" on Adult Contemporary The official video of "Fernando" was filmed in February 1976, with Dancing Queen in the sames two days in these Official Video you could see: Bjorn & Benny, both in guitars Frida & Agnetha confronted both in frontal and profile images (repeating "Mamma Mia" technique used) premiering her gypsy style dress and a last comparation "Fernando" (1976) is first ABBA single with Frida in lead voice, recorded to her solo album in Swedish (released before ABBA) while "S.O.S." (1975) is first ABBA single with Agnetha in lead voice, and recorded to her solo album in Swedish (but released after ABBA) Thanks so much for these video and reaction I wish you a great weekend See you in the next My best regards from Buenos Aires Argentina 🇦🇷 South America

a separate comment Since I don't see that you have a playlist for ABBA (and I hope you can) It's harder for me to remember exactly all your reactions to them. I think you did: S.O.S. Fernando Dancing Queen Knowing me knowing You Why did it have to be me happy new year (if some are missing, someone will add) Tomorrow is a very important date for ABBA, and one that goes almost ignored On February 9, 1974, ABBA won the Melodiefestivalen contest in Stockholm and with it the right to represent Sweden two months later in the classic Eurovision. It will be the birth of the ABBA Legend with its historic triumph with the iconic "Waterloo" Therefore, very soon after the 50th anniversary is celebrated, my suggestion is that you review that historic live performance of ABBA, that night in Brighton in the UK, when ABBA crossed the BBC screen and conquered the world with "Waterloo "

This song is from 1975 i believe. It was written specially for Frida. She first recorded it in Swedish for her Swedish solo album called "Frida Ensam" a great album where she deciced to focus on her solo career. It was a huge hit all over Europe. Later she re recorded it with ABBA. On that same album she did an incredible version of Gary Puckett and the Union Gaps "Young Girl" you should listen to it even though it's in Swedish it's terrific. Big Frida fan here too. She started life out tough right from the start being an orphaned but never let that stop her. Insipiring.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You so Much! - for Your closing Analysis of ABBA:s Compositions. Because That's What They Really Are: COMPOSITIONS, Not Just Pop Songs ... they are Much More than That. I might be Biased, of Course - since I am Swedish. And I'm also Priviliged to have seen ABBA Live 1975 in My rather small hometown Umeå in the North of Sweden. ABBA:s Music is absolutely in the Same, Timeless Class as The Beatles, Never Ever to be Superceeded by Marked Produced "Pop Stars".

Just a little off on the year there buddy....actually 1976. I was both an ABBA and KISS fan. This song for decades held the record for longest run at #1 in Australia. The music video directed by Lasse Halstrom, whom went on to become and still is a famous movie director, was superb for this time frame of the mid '70's.
