That's a great idea! I've got a series of interviews planned with expats who've been here 5 years + so let's see what they say!
@social5g

Yeah, I lived in Medellin for 5 years after having visited at least 20 times. I already speak Spanish fluently, having taken Spanish in school as it was required and I always dated Latina's in the states. Anyways, lived in Provenza in the best part of town, and one day I let my guard down and that's when I got robbed and stabbed. Luckily, I made it to the hospital in time before I bled out, so I was lucky to be alive. But it gets worse, when it was time to get discharged , the hospital administrator was going to have me arrested because I didn't have money to pay my bill (I had just been robbed of everything!!). Luckily the attending ER doctor was nice enough to pay my bill when the police showed up to take me to jail (for not being able to pay my hospital bill after I just got away with my life), and I went back the next day and paid him back. The moral of the story is that there is a HATE for foreigners (extranjeros) that did not exist when I first started going there back in 2014. Sure people will smile and want to be your friend, because if you are a good person with a good personality, that is attractive to people now matter where you go. But the tourism and the way it has affected the local population has created a resentment that will come back to bite you in the ass when you least expect it. I will be selling my place in Medellin this year because between the Velezanos and Colombians that work as gangs, they waited to strike when I least expected it. Ask Colombians about how they feel even about the huge influx of Velezanos, they are not happy about what that has done to the country the last seven years. Every Colombian has had a friend, relative, or daughter assaulted or otherwise harmed by the influx of those who have NOTHING TO LOSE. This is the 800 pound gorilla in the room no one talks about. I assure you more than 70% of all the bad shit that happens is done by the Venezuelans. Put the two together...influx of immigrants and correlate it to the rise in robbing's, stabbings', etc. So now you have the resentful indigenous population, as well as resentful low life thugs and gangs preying on the foreigners. A deadly combination, no pun intended. This poor guy in the video who just bought a place and is wearing rose colored lenses, be careful man. You seem too trusting and naive, this is not Texas or Hawaii! Keep a low profile, maybe rent your place out so you have the real estate ownership marker down (which is how I'm sure you got a R type Visa, which is what I did, so that's how I know). Rent short term and move around, that is how a foreigner has to operate in Medellin, as eventually something will happen when you least expect it. And it's only going to get worse. For all the reports of people who actually speak up about getting robbed, etc......think of how many don't. It's like the party scene in Ibiza, lots of people die every year, but it's never in the official statics because they just ferry them over to Barcelona, and the death gets recorded there. Now you have all these KZitemrs trying to monetize on every aspect of Medellin, from the pluses to the minuses. I have mixed feelings, and it's a deep dive I won't get into. On one hand they are raising awareness, on the other hand, it would have never gotten to this point if the spread of information wasn't so easy. So goes the story of life in the social media age. I will leave you with this: YOU WILL ALWAYS BE A FOREIGNER IN ANY COUNTRY YOU ARE NOT FROM, and with that comes racism and resentment. Money, and I would go so far as to say survival, brings out the worst in people. Don't shoot the messenger.........Colombia is not a safe place for foreigners, the local municipalities could care less about your life, it has no value there. And just because you're not a statistic doesn't negate that simple fact. The golden rule if you want to live: NEVER GO ANYWHERE ALONE. It is literally and figuratively a fucking jungle, and you are the prey. Good luck to all!

Medellin's crime stats for 2023 mean there was a 1% chance (could be robbery or murder) for being a crime victim in a year in Medellin. So if you somehow live in Medellin for 100 years you can be expected to be the victim of a crime once in your life. I think such odds are acceptable. People who live their life in constant fear of something unlikely to happen probably will die even sooner out of stress related causes. That does not say to act like an idiot and invite crime (e.g. those KZitemrs whose channels are all about how many dangerous places they can visit). That does not mean you won't know someone who was a crime victim in the past year. If you know enough people eventually one of them will have a low probability event. In general, I think if more people paid attention to stats, learned stats, they would stop overreacting to anecdata that has been greatly increased in the Internet age.

This sad testimony that you are saying is the pure and holy reality. I went to Medellín once 2 years ago and I never go again. What you say about the hatred of many people towards strangers is true, there is an atmosphere that exists everywhere they want to attack you for that. in the subway, supermarket, on the street etc etc... and it is a very large average of people who have hatred towards strangers. I'm sorry if there are people who are bothered by this but prevention is better than cure, there are many naive people who want to see what is best for them. Imagine you are saying that you were robbed and stabbed, you were left in the hospital, you could have died, I am very sorry. take care everyone greetings

I agree -- Medellin is beautiful and the people there are amazing. But you also need to keep a low profile. I wouldn't advise that he talk about his properties in the U.S., disclose how much he paid for his apartment in Medellin, or that he wear jewelery when he goes outside. That necklace might not have much monetary value for him, but for someone else it's a signal that he has more to harvest. Live the good life, and be careful.

I still wonder how there are even jewelry stores in Colombia if this no wearing jewelry were actually a necessary practice. I agree that it increases the odds, but the odds are 1 crime every 100 years for someone in Medellin, so why live like you are going into a battle?@@AKJoel

Joel, you have a very useful channel with information and neutral opinions about life in Medellín. It's a pity you don't have as many viewers as the other channels that only talk about nightlife and men complaining that they almost died after inviting two or three girls they just met on the street for a drink. 🙄 Certainly, your viewers and followers are very different and educated compared to the "passport brothers". Maybe you could make more videos about nice tourist things in Medellín that will attract more visitors to your channel.
