I am a Naga from Angami tribe and let me explain to you how we came to eating dog meat. Our ancestors were head hunters and before they go to battle they would eat dog meat because they were considered to be the bravest among any animal. It is considered that eating dog meat gave them the bravery of a dog to be a true Naga warrior. Edit: I would like to add that: Back then Naga warriors used to eat dog meat before going to battle because they considered it imbued them with bravery. Now due to Modernization we don't have any more warriors, head hunters so now people who eat either enjoy the taste, they are readily availabie or there is a demand for it. I will like to point out majority of Nagas don't eat dog meat infact many have pets of some kind (I myself have eaten only once in my life out of curiosity). It was never a taboo and considered just another form of meat. Dog meat is consumed before and after traditional wrestling matches by the wrestlers for the same reason. Also it is considered by many tribes that after performing heavy manual work eating dog meat replenishes their energy. Dogs were sacrificed and eaten to drive off evil spirits. Back in the day there was no religion. People believed in superstition and evil spirits. So even though these days almost every Naga has converted to Christianity or other religion they still don't want to displeasure the evil spirits so they will follow old tradition and practice it. Hornbill Festival which represents all tribes of Nagaland is a recent annual festival that came into action only a decade ago (Organised by State Tourism to give a closer understanding of the people and culture of Nagaland) . Every tribes in Nagaland has their own festival. E.g. I am Angami and we have our festival "Sekrenyi" (sanctification of body, mind and soul) and dog meat is eaten as a symbol of prosperity. Rice is abundant so it became our staple food. We have abundance of forest so everyone is primarily a non-vegetarian. Even now if you go to the villages you will see hunters and their kill vary anywhere from birds, squirrels, wild cats, boars, deers to anything. If you are lucky some will even show your their muzzle loading gun that are 80+ years old. Eating dog meat was never about disrespecting. It was a matter of scarcity of food.

@Ramesh shinde Yes monkeys were eaten. Animals that are found in the region. Ask any visitor and you will immediately notice the scarcity of common birds you find in other cities (swallow, pigeon etc) scarce in Nagaland. But our region has abundance of green vegetation so we are not hunting wild animals out of extinction.
