This is the type of in-depth tutorial that Adobe should officially be doing, now that they have integrated OCIO officially into AE. Regardless, this and your pt2 were excellent. Their online help is next to useless and doesn't explain the options (1.2, 1.3, studio etc.), so without something like your videos, people are lost. So typical Adobe on execution. Also, most of the YT vids focus on bringing in ACES cg. Yea, that's great, but most of the time finishing is spent integrating things like you show, so the Colourist doesn't throw a fit. If you have a chance to make a video going over the new ACES options that would be great as this has proven to be the most helpful vids I have found on the subject matter, as far as making AE work well.

thanks for the best tutorial, I watched last night and very excited, this morning I start practice, But still confused: 01. I rendered out EXR from Blender in ACEScg or Linear color space 02. Set AE working color space to none 03. import the EXR, uncheck the "preserve RGB", it looks normal(not as dark as linear file), I think it is because of Project setting: Assume working gamma as 2.2. 04. so I use color profile effect to convert it to linear. 05. use OCIO, convert it from linear srgb to ACEScg, then ACEScg to srgb It always looks different as Blender render viewer.
@AeBlues
Жыл бұрын
Hi 1. yes, you want it to be linear. if you use acescg that's a creative choice. in Ae you can convert to anything from anything 2. yes 3. it's unchecked by default. you can either check it or use color profile converter as an effect on each layer and check "linearize" on ouput profile. assume gamma doesn't matter because we are doing this manually using color profile converter 4. yes 5. if it's linearsrgb - this should be on the precomp containing all your passes -> OCIO going from linearsrgb to acescg. if it's already acescg - no need to do that now you have succesfully put an acescg object in your scene. you can't view it properly on your monitor unless you put an adjustment layer with acescg -> whatever you want: log, srgb, rec709 etc. I don't know what blender uses as a view LUT. the rocket example in the ACES workflow should be the same approach. kzitem.info/news/bejne/zaSpnHWrg6xzoX4 and of course understand the EXR logic in after effects: kzitem.info/news/bejne/zaSpnHWrg6xzoX4 let me know how it works for you. you can contact me also at aebluesvideos@gmail.com

Hi there! Thanks for a clear workflow tutorial with Aces .. it’s different then everything else out there in the way u work in no colour space in the project settings.. I tired it today and it works well !! One question .. when importing an exr sequence from maya (srgb linear ) the only thing that happens to it when converting to aces Cg is a slight desaturation and darkening … would u say that’s normal ? .. it’s weird as it feels like I am loosing Color .. it doesn’t look like in my maya scene .. close but not the same :). Toda ! :) Maybe it’s to do with my display convert .. I tried rec out put and Rec display but both do it ..

yes it's different. I found it to be "safer" then other method. full control. it should be exactly the same. make sure you first remove the gamma from the exr. then it should behave exactly the same - appear linear exactly the same. I am not sure what you have in maya, maybe some LUT or something. I don't have maya so can't check. this workflow is exactly what you do in other comp software so nothing should be changed.

Couldn't wait to get up this morning and practice using the ACES workflow. It's working so well, thank you. I do have a question, if I may? Basic scenario: a simple layer stack of footage + two adjustment layers to use OCIO to roundtrip back to LogC, but preview with OCIO Rec709: 1. ARRI LogC to ACES Rec709 (OCIO) - Preview layer 2. ACEScg back to ARRI LogC (OCIO) - LOG (final) render layer 3. XYZ.mxf ARRI Alexa Log C footage (OCIO Arri Alexa to ACEScg) All works fantastically, but I'm now confused about which layer I should be adjusting exposure (the preview is a little bright), and if that's the same layer I'd be looking to make any color correction on. I'm assuming Exposure and Lumetri Color would go on the top (preview) adjustment layer, AFTER the OCIO conversion (for basic client previews, not grading), so that changes are in fact being made to the Rec709 image? Have I got that right? And then, if there's a second source for compositing that needs its own Exposure adjustment, that would come before its own OCIO conversion, with Linear bypassed. Many thanks for your help, in advance.
@AeBlues
2 жыл бұрын
ok, you did watch part 2 right? because it really goes into different scenarios which are really the main ones you might encounter. the main idea is this: you are working in linear color space (exception are effects that work better in log color space) , you are rendering log color space, and you view the display color space. the color corrections are done in linear color space, so it depends which tool you are using, exposure for example has a checkbox so it can work fine in linear. lumetri needs to work in log color space so you need to create a color conversion sandwich. this is all explained in the 2ndpart, especially the 1st example. see if that works for you.

I watched both, three times. I get it now. I understand. A lot of AE muscle memory to overcome and a lot to take in. But superb. I’m not affiliated in any way with the plug-in Workflower but I’ve been using it recently and I think could really help organize this workflow in a way that helps people understand. I think the combination of your excellent workflow, organized using Workflower, would really help visually delineate where one is working and applying effects at the Linear/Log/Preview spaces. I’ll try it and report back with a link to a screenshot.

@@fiveshorts I watched now the workflower tutorial - looks quite complex. I would comp in node based compositor for anything more than a simple comp. I would recommend you try fusion if you haven't already. Possibly dumb question: when setting AE working space as none, the "linearize working space" gets grayed out because the math of the operations (blending modes curves etc) will be linear by default. Is this correct? Thanks :)
@AeBlues
2 жыл бұрын
No, when setting working space: "none" it means there is no native linearization by after effects i.e after effects is not linearizing blending/re-sampling/motion blur and we are responsible for doing the linearization manually. we can do that with effects or plugins like color profile converter or OCIO. it gets easier to understand as you practice and see for yourself how the results look in comparison.

@@Funcraftythings it really depends on what are your needs. ACES is not for everything. I show real world scenarios where I would typically use it. if the colors are the same - then they are the same... you should always check in the same app to tell. on every device there will be a difference and there's nothing to do about that. the only exception is if you know where the video is going to be screened and adjust to that specific device by trial and error.

if you render mp4, you would want it to be for delivery only. that is - delivery color space. not for further editing/coloring/vfx. for maintaining color fidelity either use prores4444 triliions of colors for Log workspace or EXR for Linear workspace. I would not do either of those using Adobe Media encoder but you probably could with the right settings (need to make sure maximum bit depth and all sorts of checkboxes to make sure the information is stored properly)

Seems crazy that AE doesn't take care of all this for you. I've struggled for years bringing in footage and trying to export it out and have the colours stay exactly the same. I've started learning Blackmagic Fusion and have had no issues with color shifts so far.
@AeBlues
2 жыл бұрын
you should not have any problem with color shifts in Ae, the only issue is the auto gamma on EXR assets but that's easily removed. in fusion (studio) you would need to do the same process: instead of Ae's color profile converter you use fusion's gamut node. and Ae's OCIO is OCIO node. the difference in regards to color is that fusion doesn't apply gamma automatically on EXR in import or export, and it is faster than Ae in dealing in all of this. I would definitely prefer not use Ae for complex stuff, or multipass stuff, but use fusion instead. fusion resolve does have internal color management, but I would prefer to transfer color profiles manually there also.
