Melee with and without royalty are also entirely different things so with it i wouldn't call it masochistic You can skip enemies you want instadead to your highly armored psycaster with a zeus hammer or teleport them into a position to disable turrets or centipedes

this reply is 2 years later, mine just straight stupid, turned on the CE, have no ammo for SMGs because my tech is medieval, infestations on my freezer, and had to obliterate half of my base using orbit targeter bomb, luckily nobody was hurt, my prisoners straight up dead

This is a excellent guide, explaining quite a lot of mechanics, and also hinting as to how maces and blunt damage goes worth noting that slug shells also have comically high blunt penetration value, so they're great against highly armored targets as well

So far in terms of defense against mechs the most effective ways I've used: 1. High caliber guns with HE (armor penetration + explosive) ammunition. To trigger mechs I like to use anti material rifles. They often can one-shot smaller mechs and can be used for hit and run tactics if the mechs are not attacking your base. With a good kill box creating medium and close range scenarios I can also use heavy turrets with the HE ammunition. I've taken tanks apart with that. 2. Melee combat - I know it sounds insane to suggest melee. But hear me out. If I can lure mechs into narrow spaces where I only have to fight 1 or 2 mechs at a time I can kill them one by one. To do this it needs two things - Heavy armor (riot armor or better) and plasma- or monoswords. A Zeushammer to support is also useful for the ability to stun mechs. 3 pawns attacking a mechs in a narrow corridor can win a fight against 10-20 mechs. It takes time though and if you're unlucky the mechs can still kill your pawns with lucky hits. Please note that it has to be either plasma or monoswords as everything below is to weak to penetrate the armor of the mechs. Also these swords have pretty high parry stats which helps with the defense. Btw. with CE early on it can be difficult to have the appropriate range weapons to deal with mechs. Therefore when a vendor comes into your colony offering plasma swords or there is a quest offering a marine armor or something similar, take it and hack the mechs to pieces. It also works wonders against humans btw. I've cleared pirate bases with 50+ pirates using two melee pawns by using the same tactic as I use against mechs - narrow path and then hack and slay them one by one. Btw. I think it's unfortunate that artillery is so freaking weak against mechs. I've shot a considerable amount of HE, incendiary and even EMP grenades (81mm and 105mm) onto mechs and they are shrugging it off like it's nothing. I will take another look at 155mm but if that doesn't do anything then I will only use it against bugs and humans.

Fun fact - damaged organs deal a lot of pain damage. Even destroyed organs, such as destroyed kidney or stomach will deal pain so one or two pistol shots can knock out an enemy with pain crit if the bullets hit the organs so body armor is a must have (just like irl)

It's worth including a knife in most load-outs so your colonist has a backup melee option. A knife weighs very little and is much better for your colonists health then using a rifle as a club. It's also better for your rifles health.

For tactics: narrow choke-points in hallways have been a God-send for me when dealing with insects. It's not fool-proof by any means, but I've on more than one occasion turned guaranteed instant colony wipes into survivable circumstances using three wide corridors with two rows of gunners stacked up. Front row having the best armor and melee weapons to switch to when attacked. The embrasure trick... hate to admit it but I never considered that. Will be considering that in the future once I do another mountain base. For rocket launchers against centipedes, I seldom use them, but do you believe HEAT is an absolute necessity, or could HE work against them too? Sabot's REALLY bad against fleshy targets, but the armor piercing is unrivaled. Still real good for harder targets in weaker calibers IMO, just only in specific circumstances where AP wouldn't otherwise cut it. Really great video all around. This does a great job of explaining how to use CE and WHY CE is such a good mod. Will be showing folks this when they ask about using it for the first time.

@@anothersomeone4244 @anothersomeone4244 The first one was explained on the melee part, but it was strictly for melee, but the fire smoke is definitely the safest since you could wear gasmask and just smack them like bees dazed when you use a torch's smoke For rocket launchers, HEAT is not necessary but it is the one that is most efficient in taking out fatty targets like centipedes and in some mods, large bulky stuff, even the nociosphere kneels at it. Mechs usually spawn a year after you make your colony, so you don't have to worry, also molotov can be crafted at a crafting, also trading and blazebulbs are a good way to get prometheum.

Vanilla is unplayable for me because this mod has been a part of 96% of my playthroughs like many other commenters for the past several years of playing on/off. Feels like it should've/always has been part of the game for me as the base combat feels so barebones without it. I will admit I tried pure vanilla for a full playthrough right before 1.4 and re-adjusting to the vanilla jank was its own fun challenge.

@@stevejurgens9985 the problem with the mechanoids is that without very good powerarmor you can't really "give and take" like with pirates, only turbostomp or get turbostomped. Thus many of them were made papery to compensate for their penetration values.

Switching to your pistol is always faster than reloading. So, you can add a pistol and a one or two pistol mags to the combat pawns and switch in the heat of battle instead of wasting precious time to reload.

new update nerfed APHE and API tho. Previously both AP-HE and AP-I can reduce armor durability in case they fail to pen, which allow them to do sabot's job against raiders in power armor while still being effective against everything else. Now bullets that doesn't pen will do nothing to armor, so you will actually be in trouble if you don't have sabot in your loadout.

A lot of mods have gotten CE compatibility from the devs themselves; I noticed that any mods that aren't compatible have errors in the console fire so you can remove those easier than manually running through all the steam pages of mods. I also used Yayo's but have moved onto CE with Medieval Overhaul. Try it out! I'd recommend Rimpy, a mod manager outside of the game itself to make your modlists!

more serious note though, the reason why I havent finished the game, is because that I have this belief that a game so beautiful, especially a sandbox, isn't worth to see its ending, but in regards to using CE, it's more like CE's ammo projectile is more realistic than the one in the vanilla, where it's chance based, even when you're behind walls. So it's better to play vanilla first, even without finishing the game, and then use CE to check which one is better for your preference

This is a good video but I have one complaint, the lack of melee. Yes, you're covering it in a separate video but I feel. It's disingenuous to call this a guide without covering it. Now if you were to title it part 1, or CE Basics, thatd be great. But as is, it is wholly incomplete. Looking forward to part 2.

Okay thank you for the insight, you are right it is disingenuous, this is an oversight in our part since my fellow collaborator and people who critique it at first said that just naming it CE guide will catch eyes of the people. They also said the melee is extremely underwhelming that it needs its own separate guide so I;m probably gonna name this one CE Guide: Ranged. There is little data on how to use melee that I was trying several strats myself. Still thank you for your suggestion, and I will implement it.

I actually had my modlist fixed by requesting patches and downloading the github link on discord, that way, you get access to the faster fixes that the steam version usually lacks frequent updates, the current mod team is trying to figure out with the autopatchers in which we can play a modded game without needing patches, the idea is in its infancy atm.

Several factors but answerable here: discord.gg/safyWuA First that I can think of is your game has it's setting to no ammo, which is not available in 1.4 rimworld as it is only in 1.3 rimworld. 2nd: wrong bullet caliber, double check if your weapon matches the caliber you are carrying, making loadouts help as pressing the bullet button while selecting the weapon also shows what caliber the weapon uses, it's also in the info bar 3: Weapon isn't properly patched, you have to report it on bugs CE discord with the link earlier I posted 4. CE is outdated, try downloading the github and extract the zip folder to your local rimworld 5. Your modslist is bugged: You'd have to ask the CE community for that on how to fix it discord.gg/safyWuA

If you have DLC (I forgot if it was royalty or Biotech) the pikes dont shoot their mortars, instead they shoot like a faster lancer, but they pretty much have the same armor so you have to shoot, move and shoot, while dodging lance line of sight, basically deal with the Scyther > Lance> Pikeman > Centipede in that order, just use line of sight
