A point of note: you can give a vehicle a Face command at the end of a movement order. The troops will dismount once the vehicle has reached the waypoint while the vehicle faces.

Will troops embark a vehicle during a turn when the vehicle has a pause command, as long as the pause is long enough before the move command begins?
@RedBarronST
3 жыл бұрын
@@RayLovesToMakeMusic I don't know about a pause command, but if the facing order is at the end of movement command the troops will embark. I used this to great success in the 2nd mission of Courage and Fortitude in CMBN. US pioneers ever team in a jeep with a move order to the bridgehead couples with the jeep driver's fast movement commands to get to the bridge along the road under the cover of the pre-dawn darkness. It took less than a minute to get there, so the facing command got the jeep turned around. Then in the next turn it was the same fast commands to book it back to the crossroads, and a facing command to turn around. Meanwhile I had an embark order (with no pause command needed) for the next team I to the jeep. By the end of turn 2 the jeep is facing back towards the bridge, and the next team is loaded up. Rinse and repeat until you've got as many teams as you think you can get away with in there before the sun comes up and the defenders can see. Also hold on to your butts and hope the artillery raining down doesn't take out your men or the jeep. By the way, that mission is a beast. My irl moral has been shattered now that I'm halfway through the 1.5hr timelimit with only 2 wounded squads at the right flank forest. So. Much. Artillery.

@@RedBarronST Very innovative! I think some experimentation is in order, since you have discovered that facing command at end of move allows embarkation. Does it also work if vehicle gets the face command but doesn’t actually change orientation?

Always easy to follow along with Hap, especially for those new to the game. Some other good things to remember when using transports are radios, and ammo you don't have to actually go into the vehicle and still get. For the latter it works well when troops are in building, and vehicle is parked right next to it not facing enemy. If a troop inside runs out of ammo, and the vehicle has it is will automatically supply a magazine full. It's part of the auto ammo sharing within one action square game mechanic. Use vehicles this way as moving ammo dumps especially with sub machine guns. For the radio, any pixel troop can use, and often good to keep next to your mortar teams giving them use.

Even for us Combat Mission veterans it still seems to be worthwhile to watch these basics videos, as every other one seems to contain at least one thing I didn't realize before. I hadn't actually realized that infantry won't dismount transports that are only paused. I'm not sure I've really tried before since I always play in real time, and so haven't made much use of the pause command. Of course I'll be getting one heck of a crash course in turn based play soon since I intend to start a full Combat Mission playthrough soon, including CMAK and CMBB which don't support real-time play (I didn't install CMBO since I kinda assumed that CMBN pretty much supersedes it, same setting, newer engine). Basically the "full Combat Mission playthrough" I'm planning means that I have downloaded every custom scenario and campaign I could find for CMAK (up through July 1943, when I will switch to CMFI for this front), CMBB (up through June 1944, when I will switch to CMRT for this front), CMFI, CMBN, CMRT, CMFB, (CMCW will go here when it's released), CMA, CMSF, and CMBS. I am in the process of sorting all of the scenarios and campaigns (or "operations" in the case of the gen 1 games) in chronological order (renaming each scenario with the date at the front of the title in YYYY-MM-DD format and playing in alphabetical order, a tedious process since not all scenario designers include a date in the description so I sometimes have to dig into the scenario editor to get the date). A process I am almost finished with, after almost a year (I have literally thousands of scenarios at this point mwahahaha (although some of them are duplicates, since I did bulk downloads and different sources sometimes provided the same scenarios)). Of course that means I haven't actually played any Combat Mission in nearly a year so I will be a bit rusty when I start, but that is actually part of it (I want to start a bit rusty and gain experience during the playthrough). Of course it has grown into a bit more than a Combat Mission playthrough. I have slotted in the Scourge of War games to cover some 19th century warfare (Waterloo campaign and the American Civil War). I have a mod for Close Combat 3 which does an adequate job of representing WW1 combat (company sized sections aren't really in the scope of the engine, so the TO&Es aren't exactly accurate for 1914, but the modder(s) did a great job all things considered). That leaves a regrettable gap between 1863 (Scourge of War doesn't cover the entire ACW) and 1914. No games covering the Franco-Prussian war, or the Boer wars, or the Russo-Japanese war. Sigh...no one seems to want to make games that cover this fascinating period of technological and tactical development. There are also mods for Close Combat 3 covering Poland 1939 and France 1940, but I couldn't get them to work on the GoG version I have, so I'll be turning to Theatre of War to cover those campaigns (actually many of the custom scenarios for CMAK cover France 1940, but they don't have any French armor in them since the base game doesn't provide any for use, so I am turning to Theatre of War to provide some scenarios with French armor). And I figured "what the heck" and slotted in Command Ops 2 to provide some operational context concurrent with my playing of the Combat Mission scenarios set in the same theaters and time periods. All in all it is a playthrough that will take a couple years to complete (it will be 2023 or 2024 when I finish the last mission of CMBS) and it will be glorious. I am finally ready to start the grand history of warfare playthrough I have always dreamed of (with a few gaps and an arbitrary start point at the end of the Napoleonic Wars).

What a great time to be alive, combat mission is now updated for the 21st century and we don't have to be playing The Double Dragon characters anymore,. As Charming as combat Mission first version was, there are so many things that soured me on it. But the next engine has taken care of almost everything.

My personal experience in the more modern titles is that NATO IFVs are far quicker to get out of than Soviet/Russian IFVs. If your going for the cool cavalry charge, where you roll up in a line and dismount right in the enemy’s face, it’s better to be in a Stryker or a CV90 than a poor ol BMP 3. Great video!!!

How on Earth is a sim this deep incapable of returning equipment to a vehicle? And that means they can't just carry it for others? A rifle squad can't grab mortars for a mortar team?
@PaulMcElligott
6 ай бұрын
Actually, they can. See the video on ammo sharing, but if one infantry unit is near another and has ammo for the other’s weapon(s), the second unit will use ammo from the first if the second unit runs out. So, an infantry squad could grab mortar shells and serve as ammo bearers for a mortar team, which would use mortar shells from the squad until the squad ran out, as long as the squad remained in close proximity to the mortar. There doesn’t seem to be any way for the squad to “give” the shells to the mortar team, however, and it has to stay close to the mortar for the team to use that ammo.
