In Vietnam, my Brother got bogged up to his waist in thick monsoon mud, immobilizing 'em, so his buddies had to toss 'em a chain secured on the other end to an armored personnel carrier to pull 'em out!

Prvt. Wiler should've tossed his radio to the the Lieutenant sooner. Though a body shouldn't be completely immersed in quicksand because it's denser than water or even a human being, any extra weight will force you deeper. Check out what happened to Jack Pickett, a botany student, in the Okeechobee swamp in 1964.

I've lived almost 70 years and have never seen any quick sand in the real world.

You never spent any time on the Red River between Texas and Oklahoma. It looks like ordinary wet sand but when you step in it, you’re going down fast. None of the slow sinking like in a Tarzan movie.

Quicksand is physically impossible. A human body floats in water, water is significantly lighter than sand. Sand that is liquefied, even with water, will give the human body incredible buoyancy. In the same way that you are more buoyant in the ocean, or the great Salt Lake, because salt is in the water making it heavier, you would be even more buoyant in sand. So yes, you may sink down to your knees, or maybe even thighs, and you may lose a shoe. But you arent going to drown

Always understood quick sand to be dry... Imagine stepping into a swimming pool full of talcum powder.

I like how he checked to clear the chamber before shooting himself. Is seems a branch would be longer than a carbine and wouldnt risk your only weapon.

How common is quicksand in France? I seem to recall from the mid-Sixties it was a fairly common plot device, especially in shows based in Africa, but don't think I've heard of any real world deaths from it.
