0:00 - How to measure a violin: caliper or flexible meter? Linear measurements vs. over-arching measurements
0:13 - To obtain accurate measurements in bowed instruments it is necessary to use a caliper, since if a flexible meter were used the presence of more or less high archings would make the measurement variable and unreliable compared to the actual linear one. The most critical measurement and the one that changes drastically is that of the width between the Cs, because the relationship between the width and height of the arching is particularly unfavorable, but all the other measurements taken over the arching will undergo variations. For a violinmaker, it is essential to refer to linear measurements, so knowing how the measures were taken is very important and should always be specified.
0:48 - Minimum width between Cs - Linear measurement taken with the caliper - 108 mm
1:00 - Minimum width between Cs - Measurement over-arching taken with the flexible meter - 112 mm
1:13 - Comparative measurements caliper vs flexible tape measure - Minimum width between Cs
1:38 - Comparative measurements caliper vs flexible meter - Body length
2:23 - For the measurement of the stop length there are no substantial differences between the flexible meter and the caliper, but the latter allows for greater accuracy
