I had been going to the same barber for years until I started growing my beard. While it was short they did a good job but as I started letting it grow longer it became apparent that they just weren't experienced with a longer beard. At the same time I was watching all the old Beardbrand videos to get an idea on shaping/styling that i liked. Luckily for me I live not too far from one of the shops that used to contribute to BB videos and have been going to them for a couple of years now. I guess my advice is if you feel your current barber isn't comfortable with beards, do yourself a favor and try other barbers. Side note, THANK YOU Dan for your videos, you have been a HUGE part of my beard journey!!!

A helpful hint I've learned regarding fading sideburns or trimming cheek line at barber shop is to use land marks on face to guide the barber. For example I tell me barber I want my cheek line to start from the middle of my ear and end at the corner of my mouth. This give them a visual guide line thats difficult to mess up

The barbershop is a whole vibe that I love 2 experience. From conversation 2 discovering new music or movies. If u don't tell em exactly what u want, they'll do whatever they feel looks good. If they mess up, tell em. It's nothing 2 be afraid of. I feel a lot of guys are missing out on the whole barbershop experience. It's very therapeutic at times wit the right shop & barber

I’ve found a great barber and always make an appointment to see him. I have a friend that just sees who is available and is frustrated when the cut is different. The same words can mean different things to different people. Find a barber you like and keep seeing the same one. He learns your needs and wants and the peculiar ways your hair grows and works with more information over time then starting from scratch.

I've only had a barber touch my beard once. It was about two weeks ago (10/27/22). Before I allowed them to touch my beard I explained my goal of growing my beard longer and that like you say "You can't trim your way to a longer beard." I told her I wanted the to remove about half inch off the bottom, clean up my cheek line and fade into my saved head that way there's not such a hard stop. She did exactly what I asked for plus cleaned up my neck line bringing it back to my Adam's apple. You're so right when it comes to going into a barbershop, communication and knowing what you want are key.

Every time when I go to a barbar I show them a photo of my beard style from the past and I mention and clearly tell them I want to shape it but keep the growth, maybe trim the bottom of the mustache to not get in my mouth but don't touch the rest of the length so I can do a handlebar I also tell them to trim a bit behind the ears so it won't creep on behind my head and also the day before I style my beard as I like it and show that photo and tell him "look this is what I'm going for and I want to keep it like that"

This is so imperative for so many people! As you know, I don't personally use a barber for my beard, but I know so many others do. I know exactly what you mean when you talk about people not speaking up, even when they know something isn't going right. I have done this with a head hair cut, but like many others, just didn't say anything. It wasn't a BAD cut in any way, but I would have liked it more if I had spoken up. I at least have now learned more lingo to describe exactly what I want, and if they have questions they ask.

I was going to a barbershop in my area for about 2 years that's very well known for beards and fades, and one thing the barbers all did in this shop was to turn the chair so that you usually couldn't see the mirror. These guys seemed to know what they were doing, but if this is a common industry practice I could see this making it easy for a customer to have too much cut off.

You cover everything that needs to be said and done, Dan. My only tip is that if the barber has a beard, even a long beard is a plus. Since he knew how to trim it the right way and had experienced the downfall and the upside by learning his beard trims on his own. I notice my beard is on point. If the barber doesn't have a beard. We have to ask if they have done it before and should show you their work on Instagram, Facebook, or any other Socal Media they have done, which is a plus. This was one lesson I never asked for, and I got a lousy trim (even bad hair trim).

He left me with a crooked beard, unsemitrical lines and took away 2+ months of growth. It will all grow back but what a shame as I was about a month away from the perfect length for the look I was trying to achieve.

A really great and informative video. One that is much needed by a lot of bearded men. When I first decided to grow my first and only beard just a little over 3 years ago I thought to myself I better start looking for a good barber so when the time comes for that first trim I will have already have found a good beard barber. That was when I started looking for a good barber. From watching your videos and hearing what you said in the past about going to a barber for a beard trim when the time came for that first beard trim I started thinking about what to tell the barber. I have found a good barber and from the first trim until now I have always told the barber that I am growing out my beard longer and that I want as little length as possible taken off since I am growing it longer. Just cut of the split ends and transparency off while taking as little length off as possible. The last time I got a trim I told the barber that I was letting the moustache grow longer and not to trim the moustache. I've been getting excellent beard trims ever since.

Thank you for this Dan. Since I last commented, my beard is pretty long now, probably about half the size of yours and probably due a tidy-up. I've been putting it off because I've had maybe 2-3 trims this year and my lack of knowing what I want from my beard equaled lack of specific instructions to the barber(s), which resulted in me not being too happy with the result. So afraid lol but with your really good advice going to actively find a barber starting tomorrow. Appreciate all you do. My beard is really long in front but recently started to fork away and almost cut my front of beard up to the fork but love what I have but in between what to do. Should I cut up to thicker part where it’s starting to fork? My under beard is thick up to that part but not at the bottom.

I've found it helpful to explain your thoughts. Stuff like, "I'm growing it out, so take as little off the bottom as you can", or "that patch is slowly growing back, so don't trim down to it". Understanding why you want something reduces the likelihood of misunderstandings, and if you have a really good barber you go to fairly regularly, they may end up supporting you on your journey, giving you ideas you might not have considered, coming from a place of understanding what is important to you and where you want to be. Mine, for example, really helped me dial in what length of beard fit me best, after a year of maintenance trims as I grew a yeard to experiment with longer lengths and styles.
