Community at its best incorporates both a ton of pop-culture references for jokes, and really solid heart and emotion. Like you, that moment between Abed and his crying father is my fave moment of the episode. Great stuff.

This episode is even funnier if you watch Dead Poet’s Society first. The carpe diem professor plot line is a direct parody of it. Plus DPS is a fantastic film on its own - in the same vein as The Breakfast Club.

(I don't even like half these shows, but my opinion doesn't determine their value) Sunny is very much one tone, one joke. It's not several ingredients coming together to make a diverse meal. It's just one flavor. It doesn't have something for everyone like a lot of the shows I mentioned above. The writing isn't great but it thrives in immaturity and wild, which is what appeals to audiences. That's great for when I don't need a brain but personally, I can't even have it on in the background because it even sounds annoying and cheap. The beats are repetitive. It feels like half a sitcom to me, missing needed producers and cast. It feels like it's made by a small group of friends that all think the same joke is funny but each episode they don't tell the audience the whole joke. It's kinda sorta also not made well. Sorry. You got me thinking about it.

I like the show but it's little racist that an Arab is played by someone who is clearly not Arabic and looks and talks like a Pakistani person. Coming from an Arabic person myself, it's really obvious that Abed and his Dad aren't Arabic at all.

I think the "A-bed the A-rab" is a joke because he's not Arab? I can't remember if Abed ever describes himself as being an Arab in the course of the show, or if that's just something the other characters (mostly Pierce) assume because he's Muslim.
