I do get a lot of emails about this vide so just wanted to say that these are my 'Extra Width' Wide Range Humbuckers in the video so a higher output, hence the clipping etc etc - for a direct comparison I make a version called my Classic '71s (and reissue upgrades) which are original spec/output etc - though I reduce the neck output a little for better volume balance through the positions, and have a narrower string spacing specifically for the neck position. There's a video demo of them in action here for a better comparison: kzitem.info/news/bejne/k4lu4KBsiYtnrKw Thanks

My personal opinion: The Creamerys have the warmest sound and higher output; the Fenders seemed to have a weak output and not much in terms of clarity or punch; the Lollars seemed to have the most balanced/versatile tone of the three. In fact, the Lollar pickups sounded more Fender than the Fender pickups. Weird. Outstanding demo BTW, very informative and unbiased. You let the sound of the pickups speak for themselves.

Fender wins. I'll take tone over output. Lollars have a nice tone, but I'm not interested in the wider frequency response. I'm interested in the character of the tone. Its fender. Thanks for the great video!!@

It's the original Fender's by a country mile. The cremery's output is way to high - they just sound nasty. The Lollars get quite close to the originals but lack some of the warmth and character. The originals have definition, warmth and character - reminiscent of Rory Gallagher's strat in their global transfer characteristic. Great review by the way. Nice guys too - I visisted the Oakbridge workshop with Anssi N a couple of years ago and found them very hospitable.

Started in '62 with Hofner Verithin hollow and Watkins, now on composite-bodies and modelling amps. 3 classics - Marshall's forever bluesy driver, Fender's p'ernikety sparkly amp-of-all-trades and MB's 'Clean to grunt' vari-rectifier driven beastie p each with their trademark valve sets. Their overall response to the pickup sets are:, predictably, Fender mellow, Marshall light break-up, Mesa clean to heavy break-up/uncontrollable distortion. Basic Fender pickups aren't 'hot', they showed the least change in character over the different tone settings. Lollars, sparkle until they are (easily) overdriven. Creamery weremost chameleon - clean tones less 'spanky' than Lollars but not as 'tubby' as Fenders and definitely over-eager to break up played hard on the clean Fender amp but not as bad-mannered as Lollars on overdrive. Seems we need a 'pickup shifting' guitar for all flavours: NB with all these can add vari-coil, coil-split and parallel-serial switching (and the bran-tub surprise of Fender's S1). I'm sticking to what I do as a concert pianoforte technician - voicing grand pianos: I can claim to be a master of this black art

I think the Fender sounded best, then the Creamery (which appeared to be slightly higher output). Now change them all into alternate guitars, and I think the Brown one will come out on top because I believe the difference is the guitars resonance more than the difference in pickups themselves. There may be slight noticeable differences in pickup sound, but not as much as pickup manufacturers would spin you to believe.

Damn...I wanted the old fenders to win so bad. Lollers got it though with more of an all around detailed sound. The fenders sound great though. Less detailed but when you consider that detail isnt really the sound of vintage guitar tone the fenders sound right. Creamery's midrange isnt open enough and I think theyre a little too hot for this style of pickup in my opinion. I would probably just choose a hot humbucker to do what they do. Fender: bridge 500k - I had to replace the original 1M pot, neck is still 1M. I'm not sure about the others but my best guess is they are all 500k, since they are easily available and most common with humbuckers. To my experience 1M is a bit more screamy and often has a step at around 8.

The Fender is the BASELINE pickup the Creamery and the Lollar are supposed CLONES of the original pickup and as far as I can hear they don't come close to the originals. Seth Lover was hired by Fender to build a Humbucker that sounded like a Single Coil - in this shootout the Lollars and the Creamery sound "kinda like" the orginal but not quite. The Wide range pickups use CuNiFe magnets the Lollars and Creamery's use Alnicos which will never replicate that glass like quality of the CuNiFe - ok I'm done

Lollar wins for best all-around. Creamery is too hot - Like Lollars on steroids....although one would argue you could always volume/tone sculpt your way out of that. IF you like the Fender best, it is because you prefer the sound profile of vintage wiring. That under-powered sound (contributed to by the weakening of the magnets over time) gives it a sort of spanky-yet-warm thing.
@j_freed
7 жыл бұрын
Jay Wilson - the Creamery Extra Width are hotter than the normal Creamery WRH model. It's not a great comparison. I suppose you could re-magnetize the Fender WRH pole pieces if they got excessively weak, that has worked fine for very old Strat size coil pickups.
@vantagestudios
7 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, yeah! Some players love the underpowered sound after a booster pedal but I think things can get a tad more complicated than they have to sometimes. RE: re-winding -- lap steel players do that routinely with the old steels. I actually have an old Ric (1941 B6) and it's got a decent charge but not quite where it's supposed to be so it's due for a rewind itself. I will def take a peek at the Creamery WRH! Peace.
