Thank you for having such a well made video and presenting it very well. The production quality is superb. I'm tired of videos that are hand held and looking like they're taking us on an earthquake or roller coaster. Not only is this made to professional standards, but you know what you're talking about and enjoyable to watch. Even for us mates over here in the States. 😃🇺🇸👍 Bravo! Keep up the great work.

8:01 Using the 100Ah battery as their example, the battery that drains their battery to only 20% full or 80AhX250 cycles=20,000Ah for the life of the battery. Next one 50% full or 50AhX500 cycles=25,000Ah, finally the cycle that the uploader is recommending is 80% full or 20AhX1,200 cycles=24,000Ah. As you can see in this scenario it's actually best to drain your battery to 50% as you get the most Ah of all the examples. In fact their is only 20% difference between the best and worse case scenarios. I think the most important message for people is to never drain your battery below 12 volts as below this amount you can damage your batteries and significantly damage your battery. Make sure you have an automatic cut off switch that protects your battery from deep and catastrophic damage to your battery.

Problem: I have a 1999 Suburban with a secondary battery tray. I want to install a second battery with a VSR Battery Doctor (Wirthco brand) that has an "Override" button for jump starting off the secondary battery. My problem is I have all my camping accessories wired to the main under hood fuse box, which is connected to the primary battery. Question: Is it OK to pull the fuse box cable off the primary battery and hook it up to the secondary battery, so I can use my accessories? If by chance I accidentally ran the secondary battery dead, would the "Override" button work to power the starter relay and ignition system to start the engine?

How do you make one of the Anderson plugs into a solar input please make a video ?
@4wdsupacentreAu

You’ll need a DCDC charger with solar input, wire the positive cable from the Anderson (it’s already got a connector so easy to do) into the solar input on the DCDC. Alternatively you could mount a solar reg in a similar way, using the positive from the Anderson into the reg then the negative from the reg to the busbar in the control box! Cheers, Cahn

It would give you a 400A 24V bank. Series multiplies the voltage Parallel multiplies the Capacity (amp hours) If you need an 800CCA 24V battery it’d be best to look specifically for that Cheers, Cahn

( Have a battery charger and a 2000 Honda generator).
@4wdsupacentreAu
4 жыл бұрын
Are you sure they're in series? if so they're running at 36V 215Ah. If they're in parallel then they're 12V, 375Ah. Yes you can charge them all together if this is the case - just connect the positive lead of the charger to the first battery and the negative to the furthest battery. that way it's charging equally through all three. This is a good link to check out for more info: www.impactbattery.com/blog/tutorials/how-to-charge-marine-and-rv-batteries-in-parallel/ Cheers, Cahn

G'day mate! I probably should've made it a bit clearer but hopefully people will see the response here anyway! I meet a lot of first time campers and 4WDers who don't know the basics of their 12V systems so I'll run through a couple of examples that I talked about in the video. I didn't go into much depth on these as it really is a 'basics' video. For example: many people don't realise their battery should be recharged fully once it's been drained down to around 12.3V - I've had people ask me to check out why their fridge isn't working and the battery is down to around 10V - "but don't I have ten more volts until it's empty?" On a similar note I've had people who didn't realise they're able to (and should) have their regulated solar plugged in all day every day. they figured they'd only plug their solar in once the battery was discharged. Sealed Lead Acid batteries like to be fully charged and stay fully charged. I also went into where to put an auxiliary battery - you shouldn't run an unsealed battery inside your vehicle - they can vent hydrogen gas, or leak sulfuric acid which isn't good in a closed area... Similarly trying to run a sealed battery under the bonnet is no good as you'll lose capacity and kill your battery - batteries don't like heat. Heat will kill your batteries. (Here's the link to a report prepared for the United States Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration where it states: "The optimum operating temperature for the lead-acid battery is 25°C (77°F). As a guideline, every 8°C (15°F) rise in temperature will cut the battery life in half." - prod-ng.sandia.gov/techlib-noauth/access-control.cgi/2004/043149.pdf ) Finally, believe it or not there are still some people who don't think they 'need' a second battery when they're regularly camping - either they expect the starter battery to run the fridge all night, or there are some folks who just turn the fridge off and hope it stays cold. So I tried to show a basic example of what happens when you completely drain your starter battery (your car won't start) and why they don't perform well when used this way (they're designed for quick discharge, rather than slow cycling like a deep cycle battery). As I said, I tried to make a basic video that'd give a brief overview of the whole system and didn't go too in depth as that can confuse people or scare them off thinking it's all too hard. The reality is it's not too difficult to understand so long as you know the basics! This short series will really only scratch the surface of what's possible in a 12V system, but down the line I'm hoping to get into some deeper topics: like circuits right down to electronic component level, modifying and custom making electronics for camping and 4WDing etc. Plus (hopefully) I can get into a bit about what I'm doing with my LandCruiser Build and all the custom 12V that's going into it right down to building my own fuel-usage monitoring and using components from two different model's dash gauges to make them work... we'll see... Cheers and thanks for the feedback! I'll try make the issues clearer next time to explain why or why not to do things a certain way so everyone can get it first time! Thanks, Cahn

Will it do any damage to the starter battery if you run the fridge off it while the car is running?
@T1000.Android
4 жыл бұрын
No because the alternator will power the fridge without the battery draining any energy.
@4wdsupacentreAu
4 жыл бұрын
No, it'll be all good! As Tyson said the alternator will easily provide enough power to run your fridge while you're driving. That'll keep the battery 'full' so it's not cycling up and down. The only exception is if you're really running a huge amount of 12v gear while you're driving and have a small alternator... for example: My old LandCruiser had a 55 Amp alternator - by the time I was running my: Highbeams (10 Amps) Spotties (15 Amps) Windscreen wipers (5 Amps) Heater fan (5 Amps) Rear window demister (5 Amps) Charging phone (~1Amp) Listening to the radio (~1 Amp) UHF is on (~1 Amp) Fridge (1 Amp) I was using a fair bit of power! (around 44 Amps total) So, the 55 Amp alternator was powering 44 Amps worth of 12V gear and that only left me 11 Amps to charge the battery up! Not enough to discharge the battery but it would definitely slow down the charging! (You can see how if you're driving through the day without your lights, windscreen wipers, heater and demister on you'd have a lot more power and charging going directly to the battery!) Mind you this is much less of an issue with newer vehicles and more powerful alternators... Finally, remember to plug your fridge back into your deep cycle battery when you stop at camp! most in-vehicle cig sockets won't have power when the vehicle is off which = a warm fridge. Or if it is powered, it will leave you with a flat starter battery! Cheers, Cahn

Ah and I'd like to correct you too with regard the statement about acid leaving the battery as a gas , this statement is very much incorrect, the water component of the Electrolyte evaporates due to Temperature and not the Sulphuric Acid, and also many so called Seal Batteries are in fact not sealed as they MUST be capable of breathing, as a result they CAN actually be topped up with Distilled water should it be required, as I have done this for the last 30+ years . . Now that 50 Amp Hour statement that is really wrong , the Ah Rating of ANY Battery is the Current the Battery can or will deliver for a period of 1 Hour THAT is it ! But it can be a useful calculating tool because a Battery that is capable of supporting a load of 100 Ah should be able to run something like a 15 Lit Console fridge for 24 Hrs before a good recharge. The 60 Lit Fridge in your example draws 6 Amps end of discussion, the Ah required is Ah = 6xT (in Hours ) so that fridge requires 6 Ah so 6 Ah x 24 = 144 Ah ( What are you on about with 24 Ah ). Properly maintained under ideal conditions a Battery can have many many cycles and not the limited number as claimed , I do however agree that discharging to 10% or less repeatedly WILL greatly reduce the service life of your Battery. Charging the Deep Cycle in the rear of the vehicle required no more that say a 10 ga wire -which is good for at least 30 Amps more than sufficient to charge the Battery Box on the way too or from your chosen camp location depending on the distance and what is running off it . I have also designed and fitted quite a few Multi battery setups for various vehicles over the years with nothing more than large SCR's or Solid state relay's for isolation, so the Battery Pair is in parallel and charging when the engine is running , when stopped it is isolated automatically and a quarter turn power cut off switch is used for emergency start ability.
