Some of those early Conan books, particularly 2,3,5 and 8, have some of the greatest covers in comics history I think. Add to that the wonderful stories and it’s amazing that Conan isn’t one of the most collected series in comics history. The first 125 issues or so plus the equivalent number of Savage Sword magazines….wow! Great stuff!

Wonderful story and beautiful copies of the Barry Smith run. I got into Conan just after Smith had left. So my Conan was always John Buscema's. I did see a few Barry Smith issues, but as a kid, I thought his art was too weird for my tastes. And lets not forget Gil Kane, who drew spectacular covers for Conan the Barbarian in those early Buscema years. They are still among the most memorable covers of my childhood.

@@aftacomics5865 Call me crazy, but I was thinking.. what if they made a movie about trying to retrieve your book in the same manner as Disney's Sandlot! Young kids trying goofy things to get it, only to accidently shred it. Then to go to their neighbor who pulls out of a box a mint copy. What a wonderful film... okay, I digress.

Love that story. At least you were able to get a copy fairly quickly. You wouldn't want to go hunting for one today! ••• I didn't start getting comics until the very end of 1974, but even then, Conan wasn't on my radar. I didn't discover how good this series was until getting the Dark Horse trades in 2004. ••• Thanks for posting this!

Interesting twist. We usually hear the stories of people FINDING comics in walls and such. You don't really hear the stories of when they were placed or LOST in the walls. Glad you got a replacement not too long after. Thanks for sharing! And would love the backer board story saved for another day. Those tidbits of how the hobby evolved are fascinating.
