Concubine Lane is probably the most visited place in Ipoh Old Town. Decades ago, it was a hotbed for opium smokers, gamblers and prostitutes. Today, it is teeming with famous Ipoh eateries, cafés, hipster food joints and a boutique hotel. There are also many beautiful wall murals that depict life in the old days.
Concubine Lane is popularly known as 'Second Wife Lane' or 'Mistress Lane' since 1908. This area was the centre for vices and owned by tycoons or millionaire miners around Ipoh. According to local folklore, a Chinese mining tycoon, Yao Tet Shin, rebuilt the entire area after the town caught fire around 120 years ago. After restoring the place, he gave 3 lanes to his 3 wives and gave them the rights to collect rent. The lane given to his wife was known as Wife Lane. The lane given to his 1st mistress was called Concubine Lane. This is the busiest amongst the 3 lanes. There are many shops, restaurants and a boutique hotel here today. The lane given to his 2nd mistress was called the 2nd Concubine Lane. This lane has some shops but is quiet. There are 4 beautiful murals here. These 3 lanes were restored for their heritage values. There is also the Kong Heng Artisan Market which you will see at the end of the video.
