Window units freeze for 1 of 2 reasons 1. The unit develops a small leak over time and the freon which has leaked out is now replaced with air...which contains water...the water particles will freeze and inevitably the evaporator will freeze over. 2. The most common cause for window units to freeze over is a dirty evaporator...air is drawn into the front of the AC and pulled across the cold evaporator and is discharged through the fan but if the evaporator fins are clogged with dirt/dust it stops circulation. Again the fan draws air in the front and across the evaporator and is discharged into the room and by the process of discharging this cold air it also prevents the evaporator from freezing. But without air flow the evaporator can't displaceit's it's cold temperatures and when idle or without air blowing the coldness away it freezes over...don't throw away that window unit...clean the evaporator coil and the condensing coil and she will work like new. An excessively dirty fan will also cause poor operation as the fan motor isn't designed to carry the extra weight of the dirt which is usually more like moldy Mudd and won't spin at it's design speeds and when the fan slows down so will the efficiency or both the condenser and evaporator

After listening to this Thermostat problems, along with Coils, I want to have all Condensers Off Roofs. These make too much noise. After a while, you're unable to clean this unit. Then you hear noises thinking it's coming from your system. This can and did cause a leak within my drywall. Someone went on my Roof, and dropped an instrument, creating a slow leak, which took over a year to find. "Found!" Cost was enough. Management was uncaring all through this horrible experience. I also want all Coils made as you can P/U. like a T.V. Again, clean it yourself. The only need would be inside the A/C unit. Then you'll need an A/C Technician, which are "Dime a Dozen!" This is another hardship. Paying Top Dollar, for less than knowledgeable. Each & Every A/C Technician must take a Test to keep their license up to date with an understanding of New Units along with parts. Why should a Coil have any bend units? No one touches a Coil other than a A/C Technician. I find that the soap that is used is made cheap. It should clean like degreaser. All this caked on dirt should be cleaned better. Then Sanitize for a better smell. You need to find that right Company, then you'll be much happier. Thank You;

Thank you! I went through the most things you described. Batteries, thermostat, loose wires, control board, tested a capacitor, was going to open the duct to check coils thinking it's either compressor, fan motor or leak. $$$$. Then I checked a contactor plunger and there was a fried bug or a cockaroach, preventing plunger from making a contact. I pulled it out, and my ac finally started working! I was going to sleep in my basement this night, the temperature went to almost 30 degrees. You saved me a few hundred bucks, thanks a lot!

My 20 yr old unit runs 4-5 minutes and then goes off for 10-11 minutes... Would you consider that short cycling? I am very comformatable in the house. There is no mold or wetness at the registers on the ceiling. It is a 4 ton unit and a 2200 sq ft house (3 bedroom/2 bath). that is like a 33% on ration. Does not sound that bad to me. It drains major amounts of condensate so it is removing a lot of humidity in the house. Thoughts?

I recently had my AC replaced in my 1 bedroom 787sq foot condo in Houston TX with a 2 ton unit. But I’ve noticed it runs for roughly 5 to 6 mins before quickly shutting off and stays off for roughly 15-20 which seems about normal. Running 5 to 6 mins seems awfully short? I don’t think my unit is oversized for humid Houston weather and I have a humidity reader and it stays usually 45-55%.

It sounds like your outdoor unit might not be getting power. The relay is low voltage but the compressor and the fan are high voltage. If you have a mult meter this would be easy to check. Otherwise try resetting the A/C breaker and checking the disconnect fuses.

I'm about to start investigating using your videos, I suspect is the capacitor, as I everything was working just fine but the fan motor just stopped spinning. I gave it a small push with a screwdriver, it worked for 10 seconds and stopped and again the compressor noise. wish me luck!

You have been a help b4, but can’t figure this out. Turned on AC for first time coming out of winter. Last year replaced ICM that has a 3min anti short cycle delay and everything worked fine. This year immediately after turning on unit would fire up fan and compressor for 7-10 seconds then shut off and repeats every 3 mins. Thought it was start/run capacitor, replaced and same issue. Plunger is good and maintains 24 volts. Filter in furnace is clean no restriction and coil is clean minor dust. Unit never ran to freeze anything up, no loose wires and thermostat seems ok new batteries and not in area of vent. please help! Only thing I can think of is gas is low in system 9 year old Trane.

Hi, so replaced the 24 volt wire to the contactor because squirrel or mouse ate through the wires replaced the starter pack at first I thought it was bad then started watching your channel went through all the voltages all good except for the 24 V so I replaced the wire unit kicked on rain for about three minutes and turned off I can hear the compressor still running then there’s a hissing noise and then it goes away after about 30 seconds of hissing and then the system kicks back on for another 3 or 4 minutes and the same thing humming and then hissing getting louder then going away and the system kicked back on but one time it did it didn’t kick back on it hissed and then hissed again without it coming on again like before. I am thinking it might be the plenum not sure because of the hissing. Your thoughts 💭

I did connected it since and everything was well until 3 days later it did it again. I checked voltage on the contactor (good), I changed the contactor against a new one (good). Of course it is happening when it's 100F outside... not a good time to go to the furnace to check wires, that will be my next step though. I'm not sure what to do wires are properly set though. Where do I go from there? Haven't seen any ice, A coils are clean and condenser unit as well. New air filter. Nothing I can see which is obvious.

@@Jacovie yes. My C wire was loose to start with but it didn't fix my issue. The issue was that the unit was overcharged and when tested it was below 90F. With temp rising, so dis the pressure and this triggered the cycling. He had to come back when temp was >90F and recovered some of the refrigerant. The unit has been flawlessly working since.

does it count as short cycling if the unit takes a while to get down to temp (from 77 to 73 degrees), but then only runs for about 8-10 minutes each time to maintain the temp? most sites will tell you if it cycles in 10 mins or less then you're short cycling.
@Eddiehartschocs
3 жыл бұрын
No if it is short cycling it will always be turning off and on within a few seconds to a few minutes. If it is staying on and getting down to temp then maintaining, your AC is doing its job. It more efficient for your ac to come on intermittently to keep your house at a set temperature rather than turning it off and having it need to cool your whole house down when turned back on.

With todays technology oversized system short cycling is thing of the past like in my case 4-ton was too small in the extreme temps of the summer my system ran constantly and didn't remove humidity worth a flip but ran normal cycles in the milder months then the other side of that coin a 5-ton was too big in the cooler months and would drop the temps to fast and would only run 5 mins at a time if that so how do you fix that you may ask? Simple do like i did and get a 5-ton two-stage heat pump with a variable speed air handler. And voila short cycling problem solved. Big 2nd stage 5-ton capacity for them 100° plus triple digit hot as heck summer days and then smaller 1st stage 3.5 to 4-ton (whatever 65% Capacity of 5 tons are) capacity for those milder 70-90° days. And as an added bonus it cut my electric usage down by more than half.

Have you ever seen a Nest thermostat causing a short double start to the AC compressor? Our AC compressor has started a sporadic, random short double start, then runs fine. Our AC Tech has done troubleshooting and changed the capacitor, etc and has no idea why this is occurring. We had our breakup box upgraded to a 200 amp box. After that replacement, we have seen this random double start. After the 10 second period of double starting, the system cools normally. The system has been gone over with a fine toothcomb, with no causes discovered. I have a Sense monitor that detects the double start and I hear it as well. I do not like to hear anything double start.

Ok, so my old air conditioner’s fan is turning off sporadically. I left for the gym, when I came back the house was warm. Now I turn it off for maybe ten minutes and when I turn it back on, it’s working fine. What is the cause of this? Thank you so much!!!

Hello word of advice TV. Thanks for all the great videos! I have been learning a lot watching these binge style. One question I had about the oversized unit solution. It seems to me that a higher fan blower setting would help in this scenario. That way more bulk airflow would pass through the evaporator in a given time frame of heat exchange. I thought that would help extract more humidity. I don’t have HVAC experience so... I’m just theorizing. Thanks again!

No. A properly sized unit will have longer run times= dehumidifing. Over sized will cool are down too fast leaving are humid. Ac will start to dehumidifing after about 10 min of running, but an oversized unit wont run that long

Could a motor replacement in the air handler cause short cycling? Unit runs for 4 min then shuts down for 15 ish minutes. Eventually it gets to the temp but takes a while. Just had a new motor out in the air handler (it’s an electric furnace also). Thanks.

Hey Man That was an awesome video of the possible causes an HVAC unit may not be delivering proper cooling, loved it. Question for you, I seem to have a unique scenario. On HOT Days the AC unit runs for an hour or two, then the condenser shuts off but the HVAC fan keeps running. If I walk out with a hose and spray water on the condenser unit, after it has cooled down, it comes back on and keeps running until it gets hot again. Your suggestion to check the capacitor seems close to my problem but not sure since it runs fine on not so hot days etc. Do you have any suggestions for me? Again, your Vidoe was quite helpful and I want to thank you in advance!

Hey Jay, I have an unusual situation. My AC unit outside appears to have freon or oil inside the unit itself and some on the concrete slab it sits on. Is this likely a leak inside the unit or are there any usual suspects?

Probably a refrigerant leak.

Probably a refrigerant leak. It may be very slight. If it takes a year to notice less cooling I would recommend refrigerant stop leak by Nu Calgone 2 to 5 ton and apply as directed. You will have to add new charge also. You probably will end up calling a small-time contractor in your area. Explain what is going on. Blessings TR

Thanks for all of your information. Last week I had new service lines installed because I had a leak underground, men didn't put a filter drier because they didn't have one on the truck. Next day unit blowing hot air, a different service man came and found that the condenser seal was blown and lost all gas. 2 days later he came back with a new condenser and installed it and also a filter drier, unit seemed to be working fine. Next day unit was short cycling, I replaced the thermostat, still no good. A new A/C tech came out ( same company) as soon as I told him what was happening he said, "sounds like it's overcharged". He drained and weighed all freon and we found that, my unit called for 4 lbs 2 oz, he pumped out 7 lbs, 8 oz. He then pulled a vacuum and recharged system with proper amount of freon and unit still working fine, you can add that problem to your list. If you have any comments about what happened here, please let me know. Thanks again. What would cause the condenser seal to blow? That would be a good video. :-)

Excellent Content. My heat pump short cycles and it goes off/on every 30-45 second during day time when its warmer outside than inside the unit but when I turn it on later in the evening and night time which is cold outside it works fine (heating the Condo). I have checked the coolant and its fine. AC guy came over and said I need to change my Heat pump all together. Any thoughts on what is wrong with my heat pump? I have an Amana 3 ton on the roof of my condo and its 10 years old. thanks

Thanks!!! Mine was my thermostat. The battery was corroded and the terminal on the circuit board had allot of corrosion on it as well. Cleaned everything up and bam!! No more short cycling. Thanks man. You saved me a service call and who knows what they would’ve claimed was the issue and tried to over charge me in the process 😅.

Any idea about very quick contactor on and off? Without plugging in compressor other parts work fine including fans. After I plugged in the compressor and turned on the switch, after a couple of seconds the contactor jumps on/off. Please see the video starts from 3:08. Any ideas? thanks; it 96 degrees out side; the 4 ton unit comes on for 7 minuted and then off for 10 minutes and then it just keeps going run for seven and rest for 9 minutes; My heater board had dead lizards all over it. Not any more' I cleaned every thing and put it back together. I set it to 81 degrees to save money, some success ; I bet I need the juice.

Can an oversized capacitor for your unit cause it to short cycle. My capacitor went bad and I replaced it but I think it may be too large for my system and now the compressor kicks on for a few minutes then shuts off for about 30 seconds and then kicks back on.

My window air conditioner doesn't turn off when it reaches room temperature. It continues to blow out cool air when it reaches room temperature. ls that normal? It also turn off and on about every 3 to 5 minutes when it's on energy saving mode. Is that normal? Please let me know, because I live in an apartment, and I think I there is some wrong with it. However I think the apartment manager is going to tell me that's how they work.
