Program Notes:
The confluence of the Sacramento and American rivers occurs near Discovery Park in Sacramento. One is bright blue and sparkling, while the other is dark, muddy and opaque. This piece, commissioned by Tyler Goodwin-Souffront, begins with a music box piano and a lyrical soli line that eventually diverges to become a playful dialogue. This progresses to a portrait of the second river, with slow-moving undulations. Eventually, the piano reprises the first melody, now crystalline and rhythmically distorted. The title is also a metaphor; I feel that the confluence of different musical ideas and influences leads me to discover new ways of expressing meaning in my own music.
