Great review! I got this beautiful pen for Christmas and I love it. Happily, I haven't had the issue with the writing experience, but the clip/nib alignment drove me nuts until I figured out exactly where I had to start the posting to achieve peak alignment.

Great review Roy! For me Conklin is like buying an awesome looking car with a crappy engine. I always get sucked in by Conklin’s great looking styles and materials, but end up disappointed with the performance. I have 5 Conklin’s now, with my latest being the All American Ebony (wood). It too has an issue with the crappy plastic feed. That’s 4 out of 5 that had problems. With so many exciting ,new , reliable fountain pen brands available , I definitely won’t miss Conklin!

You have to write two times to make the letters clear. That's sad. A pen is cheaper doesn't mean it should write like this.

Great review as always! Just a small note: a self-filling pen is not a direct (historically) upgrade from a dip pen, but from an eyedropper fountain pen (so you don't need a separate tool for filling, the mechanism for that is inside the pen already - hence "self" prefix).

Very pretty pen. Xezo has a similar model for a similar price. I am not surprised by the nib issues, my yafa boycot continues. For the price they should be able to buy the full nib unit and feed.

Like I said in another post, I have this pen in chrome trim with a stub nib. It writes very smoothly with no issues. I really enjoy it. (And I tend not to cap my pens, but I appreciate your OCD perspective.)

Well Roy, I came back and watched your review of the Conklin Endura Abalone for a second time. After watching your review for a second time, I went on to watch Vanessa's review of the pen. It was too much for me. I broke down and purchased the pen through Goldspot. Yes, I know that Pen Chalet' is the sponsor of your PenBoyRoy KZitem channel. As you stated in your review, Pen Chalet' is out of stock of the pen. You're going to hate me for this one. The first thing I did after open the box was to check the posting of the cap on to the barrel of the pen. Well, my clip lines up with the nib. 😁 Yes, when I saw that my clip lined up with the nib I thought of you and chuckled. 😉 Why did I chuckle? Roy is going to be jealous. hahaha 😏 😄 🤣 commercial

Better then silver or regular gold but yeah fair point. I do think black is passable for some reason but definitely could have been rose gold also.

The clip when screwed on to post, must of course line up with the nib! I am familiar with always having to fix that myself, by pulling the nib, refitting it in line with the already posted cap. Beautiful pen! Too bad I don’t like heavy pens!

The more thread starts that a pen has the less turns it takes to uncap/cap. I would rather have less turns and a misaligned clip personally.

Why in the world wouldn’t they put the Jowo feed on this gorgeous pen? How did you get it to write?

So I have a pretty decent collection of fountian pens and I'm wondering if you know anyone that takes pens and fixes them and cleans them and gets them to write beautifully.

I highly HIGHLY disagree with getting this pen just because you like the looks. I bought mine in Jan '21, and it's been nothing but a troublesome PoS. I've spent as much in nibs and feeds as I did getting the pen new just trying to get the thing to write half decently. I eventually gave up trying to keep the aesthetic of the black nib with Conklin branding, and got a 3rd party yellow gold plated nib (which looks bad next to the rose gold) and ebonite feed for a different pen and fit it to the Conklin. It works now, but not well enough to justify having spent around $250 for this pen. Plus, it's gotten very little use since most of the time that I've owned it, it simply wouldn't write. Despite this light usage, in less than a year the rose gold plating is already wearing through, and it scratches easier than any other metal I've ever seen used in a pen. Overall, I'd call this pen an overpriced desk decoration, and I will never buy a Conklin pen again.

Didn't eye-dropper filled pens exist before Conklin's Crescent Filler? I thought that's why it was considered 'self-filling', because you didn't have to dismantle it or use an eye-dropper.

It is interesting that jowo nibs are inconsistent on these feeds. For years people have been doing Jinhao Goulet nib swaps, and the nemosine nibs (likely jowo) by Birmingham pen co are on the same feeds as well.

I've become disillusioned with Conklin and YaFa having the pens made in China. Are Monteverde pens made in China? Surprisingly with Conklin and Monteverde both being owned by YaFa Brands, I do not have the same issues with Monteverde.

Definitely a beautiful pen. Speaking of rose gold, I just bought my first rose gold trimmed pen. I got the twisbi 580 rose gold and smoke. I know the eco just came out with that color scheme but I wanted a second 580 ink well they are very nice and convenient. One with noodlers black and the second with a "fun" color/s to be determined. The black is for my broad which can flip to give a surprisingly nice fine writing experience. It's a utility pen good for anything smooth comfortable broad but a nice fine to fall back on when crappy paper comes along. Then the rose gold (stub) will be for fun.

Well-balanced review. I watched it even though Conklin pens do not appeal to me personally. It's nicer looking than their others pens for sure, but that doesn't offset the bad nib/feed combination, which is the top of my list of annoying pen problems. The basic function of any pen, ballpoint or fountain, is to write. If it doesn't do that well out of the box - and sometimes doesn't write at all - it's a quality control issue only too frequent these days, and not just found at this price point. I've encountered this all too frequently with Visconti, and with their replacement nib units as well. No amount of pretty is going to make me put up with this kind of problem if it happens frequently with a brand. I realize this can happen as a one-off with any manufacturer, but your review seems to indicate it's a nib/feed matching problem, so there's reason to believe it will occur with some frequency.

Can you make a video about the heat setting of the nib and feed? I have a pen with the same cheapy feed and ink issues, I'd like to know how to fix it.
@jacobus57

Heat setting is totally hit and miss with ABS feeds. The technique is really meant for ebonite, as the temperature needed to impose any lasting change on an ABS feed is also high enough to damage it.

I have to go with Tom on this one. It’s handsome! But the abalone is a bit toooo much. But I feel the thing that upsets me the most is that you had a poor experience with the feed. I’ve had this happen to me and it sucks. Anyway thank you very much your no nonsense and humorous review!

Conklins are overpriced Chinese pens. It's pretty, but the shady marketing Conklin uses is a total turn off. They position themselves as a US pen to suck in the credulous, and that is a total non-starter for me. That said, great review. I always appreciate your candor!

Did you have to send the entire pen back to get a new nib? My Yafa brands(Maiora) had a deplated corroded nib to be replaced but their warranty service required the entire pen sent back which I was reluctant to do since I already lost a pen in the mail and all that waiting... I would have been happy to just get a new nib and send the bad one back so, I'll just stick a spare nib in it and drop the brand down a notch.
