In this Science (Physics) video in Hindi for Class 9 we explained and derived the law of conservation of momentum. It is a topic from chapter 9 - ' Force and Laws of Motion' from NCERT.
The law of conservation of momentum states that the total momentum of several objects before collision is the same as that after collision. To derive this we used Newton's second law of motion and Newton's third law of motion.
Suppose two objects A and B with momenta p1 and p2 collides with each other and after collision they possess momenta p1' and p2'. their change in momenta are Δp1 and Δp2 respectively.
During collision A exerts a force F on B. From Newton's third law of motion we can say that the body B exerts a force, of same magnitude but in opposite direction, on object A. So we can say that force is -F.
From Newtons second law of motion we know that the applied force on a body is equal to the ratio of the change in momentum of that body to the interval of time during which the force is applied. And let the collision occurs for the time period Δt.
So, - F = Δp1/Δt
or, Δp1 = -FΔt
As we know,
Δp1 = p1' - p1
so, p1' = p1 + Δp1
or, p1' = p1 - FΔt
Similarly we can prove that
p2' = p2 + FΔt
Hence the total momentum after collision is
p1' + p2' = p1 - FΔt + p2 + FΔt = p1 + p2
And this is the total momentum before collision.
In this way we can prove that the the total momentum before collision is the total momentum after collision. This is the law of conservation of momentum.
