Just got a budgie as a first pet (first personal pet, I've grown up with dogs). My god does it give me joy. I was a bit stressed out the first few days because I was scared to do wrong and ruin the bird. But my god are budgies (and maybe domestic birds in general) satisfying pets. They are so smart!!! I'm busy to hand train her and it's an extremely satisfying experience gaining her trust. anybody got any tips? I know all the general stuff (don't rush, use food etc.) looking for some personal experience from other people. Cheers!

Estray One most birds love red palm oil! I smear it on lettuce every morning and give it to them! My vet recommended it for my bird.... you should probably do a bit of research before giving it to your bird though
@synchlora
7 жыл бұрын
Estray One be sure that your bird has a minimal amount of seed. Seeds can cause many diseases, including fatty liver disease, if they are eaten too much. Try to use mostly pellets and fruits/vegetables. Weaning birds off of only-seed diets can be hard if they are on it but the last comment with the palm oil on foods may help with that. Also you can try to find a bird's favorite treat by setting different snacks that they eat out and seeing which they like best. If you take this food away you can use it as an extra rewarding treat for training! I don't know if you use seed a lot but many people do so I commented this just in case :) There's a lot of commitment and time that goes into having a bird-friend but it's worth every second! Have fun with your new friend!

Normal as a Rainbow thanks for the tip! I figured I wouldn't fill her plate to the brim with seeds. I do only 1 layer and she eats what she needs. She flies around all day (I don't have her clipped) so I'm not to worried that she'll get fat. She also doesn't eat that much. I'm just now trying basil but it's new so it's a little scary :p

Estray One Yeah, seeds are good but an only seed diet is bad. Bird owning is scary especially at first when you're afraid to mess things up. Anyway, good luck and have fun with your new friend! :)

Estray One budgies are the cutest! I have 3 budgies. I recommend you to try different veggies and fruits once in a while and you'll see what type your budgie like. My babies only eat lettuce I have tried almost everything but they only eat lettuce and bread, they are so smart and curious. Change his toys once in a while and keep fresh water and food everyday, talk to him and be patient! Good luck!

I never even thought about having birds until one day my dad was like “here’s some half dead baby pigeons I found at work, take care of them” not they are 3 months old and they are amazing, although I had to separate them because they are both males and male pigeons don’t go well together. One likes flying outside on his own and entertaining himself by bouncing from branch to branch on my apple tree. My other bird just likes to cuddle and watch me do things.

We got a Budgie quite by accident, on Australia day, my Husband was gardening and a Budgie flew into his hand. He brought him in and we have named him Percy, after Percy Thrower the man who made lots off different bird calls. I have never had a bird before and never wanted one either. Wow, how much fun they are, we have got him a girlfriend from the pet shop and the two are totally bonded, the best of friends. I called her Prascilla after Elvis's wife, lol. I am finding your footage brilliant and learning so much, keep them coming, cheers,

True. I did all my research months ahead and made to sure I could give my bird the best home. Time skip to the first day, I read that I needed to give it space for a few days so it can get accustomed to its new home... so while I'm changing out his water he climbs onto my finger and refuses to go back for 2 hours. (I needed to clean his water still and I didn't wanna take him out of my room yet)

There's a few things in this video that I noticed weren't really mentioned, but it also has some really good points too, still a good video to come to when considering adopting your very own bird. 1. You don't have to be an expert on birds to own one. While there a things you have to consider, you must consider them regardless when adopting any animal. There were things the internet couldn't tell me about my birds that my avian vet could. 2. Birds are destructive and need stimulation. My budgies love to chew, especially their perches and wooden toys. Chewing is great for their beaks, however, it is possible they can choke on stuff. It doesn't matter what it is, wood, rope, plastic, seed, fruit. If it can break apart via their beak, they can choke on it. It's like babies when they put things in their mouths, it's inevitable, you have to watch out for it. I left my bird alone for 5 mins with his fresh seed treat, came back to find him choking on something. I rushed him to an avian vet, they couldn't find any sign of infection and whatever it was he was choking on had either been vomited up or swallowed. 3. The best way about learning about the animal you're adopting is through spending time with it. Research only goes so far, but every bird is unique in their personalities and behaviours. Don't adopt them thinking that they're going to all be the same and it's gonna be a cake walk because you googled that specific bird and are expecting this reaction or behaviour. I'm a first time bird owner myself, I've had my budgies for a little under a month now, now I'm not an expert but these are just some of things I've discovered and taken into consideration as I get to know my birds more. They have taught me so much about themselves just by being around them. I've had a few scares with my beautiful little Albino, however with the help of my Avian Vet I am able to get him into the right direction to becoming healthy and happy.

You shouldn't keep mirrors with ur fluffy little budgie there! They can start ignoring you and paying more attention to the mirror, they will think that the mirror is their companion and pay less attention to you. A mirror can also lower their sanity level, they will think another bird is in the cage and make noises and mating sounds for it. (I have owned a few budgies and my friend works at a bird care place, she says it's best not to keep multiple mirrors with a bird.)

dont get *a* budgie. they *need* other budgies. the reason why they are so focused on mirrors is because they are extremly social creatures who cant match all their social needs with human interaction. its sick and stressfull for the bird to try and talk to 'the other bird' in the mirror. We can not replace this role.

I've wanted a pet bird for a while now, and I've did my research and come to the conclusion to consider getting a budgie. But I do have a few questions about them before I go ahead and bring one into my home thinking I've got everything under controle, I want to make sure my budgie will be happy and healthy through-out his/her life. *How long can I leave a budgie alone?* I'm still in highschool meaning I'm gone for 8 hours of the day, sometimes even 9. But I always have time after 5-6 o'clock to play and give the bird as much attention as I can. I'm also willing to get up early in the morning at around 6:15 instead of 7:15 to give it some love before I leave the house. I know that budgies need around 10 hours of sleep so I'll make sure that that happens. The bird wont be completely alone since my dad is home most of the time. But my dad spends most of his time downstairs while I'm considering keeping the cage upstairs. After school I spend most of my time in my bedroom (my parents sometimes complain about this but oh well), so the budgie would have alot of attention after school hours. Also, please note that I'm not always 8-9 hours away from home because of school, Yes I am away from school 8-9 hours on monday, tuesday, thursday and friday. But I'm 4.5 hours away from school on wednesdays. Meaning during the week I'll have more time on a wednesday to spend alot of time with the bird. If I do get a bird I will place toys in the cage and keep extra toys in a bag aside to switch the toys around every week, so that the budgie will have other things to play with every week. I can also put the radio on if necessary. *Where can I safely put the cage?* I'm planning on putting the cage in my bedroom, but my window is open most of the time (Its just slightly opened to let fresh air get inside, its not like the entire window is busted wide open, also there's a mosquito net, which wont do anything since a bird can chew through that, but its something I guess.) I can always leave the window shut if necessary. Its also a bit chilly in my room sometimes at night because of the open window, but I can always close the window and turn up the heat. I'd even like it if the heat was up a little bit, I wouldnt mind at all, because I have read that budgies need warmth to survive. *Is it okay to have a budgie when I already have a dog?* I have a 7 year old schipperke (He's becoming 8 years old this year). He's pretty gentle and doesnt bite or nip like most of his kind. He's well behaved but I do know that you cant trust a dog or cat around a bird no matter how gentle they are, since the animal could be unpredictable. I'm not planning on putting them in the same room, my dog almost always stays downstairs, I'm planning on keeping the budgie in my own bedroom like I said before. Even though I'm mostly in my room, I do spend a few hours downstairs for dinner, watching a tv show, spending time with my family. So it would be nice to have my budgie with me to keep it some company. But I totally understand if thats dangerous, I'm willing to stay upstairs with him/her if needed. (except for dinner because I do need to eat together with my family most of the time). *Should I get 1 or 2 budgies?* I want to have a really close bond with the bird, have it sit on my shoulder, play with it, and just have it bond to me very well. But with the 8-9 hours I'm away from school I'm not sure if I should get one or two birds. 2 birds will keep themselves company, but itll be harder to bond as much to them in comparisson to 1 bird (I think). I know that 1 bird will get lonely and bored, but can I prevent that from putting up toys, having my dad talk to the bird or just putting the radio on? I dont want to get a bird and then make it feel like its alone all the time, so if that would happen and it is extremely necessary for me to get 2 birds, then I'm willing to do that. But I really want that 1 on 1 bond you get when you only have one bird. I'm so sorry for this long comment but I just needed some answers. Thank you so much if you read all of it. And thank you for the help! (:

I cannot help you with all. But: You can leave it for about 20 hours with food and water for the day. It is not reccomended to have a dog and a budgie at once.No matter how gentle it is. You can have as many budgies as you want. I have one and its pretty happy because I do give him attention after school and trough the day Hope it helped Cheers

@paytonhubert8808

Jellyjules, #1 you can leave you bird alone for 2/3 of the day (i am also in school) and by budgie (Ollie) does fine but make sure you have a good amount of toys, swings, perches and maybe even a second bird so they aren’t to lonely when your gone (if that’s possible). #2for the placement of the cage I would have it in your room(it will get used to you quicker)and I would shut your window so no cool drafts come in but you can place it beside one if absolutely necessary. I have mine next to a window but it is always shut with curtains to help keep it warmer. Also don’t have a fan on because it can be to cold for the birdie. #3 I would say you should be fine if you have a dog. As long as you keep your door shut so he doesn’t wander in the room and cause mayhem! And just in case I wouldn’t clip your birds wings so if anything were to happen he could escape. #4 I would definitely get to budgies they’ll be much happier. And if you do want a strong bond here is what you can do... get one and have him bond to you and finger train him. This will take about a month to two months. Then get a second bird and during the quarantine period bond and train the second bird. You can then place them in the same cage and they’ll like you and their birdie friend. Although this can be a little risky I would say it’s worth it!Going back to why you are going to want two budgies is they will be happy and if their happy you’ll be happy! You’ll get to see them playing and talking together which is cute!(Ollie was my first bird so, I just got him /I’m planning to get a second bird/and sometimes I play budgie noises and he just lights up) that is just my experience but if you can I would definitely recommend getting two. Sorry, my answers weren’t in order, but I hope this still helped! Best wishes!!!

For me, I didn’t really plan on having a bird so soon. I rescued a baby bird by the side of the road a few days ago. I actually thought she was dog poo until she moved... she was so weak but now she’s doing really well. I’m not going to release her back into the wild. She’s a colony bird (couldn’t find her nest) and this type of bird is considered aggressive and people want to get rid of them. I’ve been doing a lot of research for her about the type of bird she is to make her life the best I can. I take her out of her makeshift cage everyday even though she can’t fly yet. I try to socialise her with people so she’s not aggressive. I will buy her a proper cage soon. It’s difficult with coronavirus lockdowns atm. But I’m really enjoying spending time with her.

Bugierigars (also called bugie, common parakeet and shell parakeet), is a small bird that makes good pets, they are quiet then sun conures they can also learn speech and tricks. There is a rare condition that can make their feathers long (if so its a featherduster) and they usually live 5 to 10 years because of how long there feathers grow and use up a lot of energy and one that makes a budgie dual colored (think of it as a conjoined twin) they live there usual life span. 1.Do I have enough patience for a bird? Yes, I am very patient and I will do all it takes to train and raise my green cheek. 2.Am I a neat freak? No, I do not mind my lovely bird making a mess, even if I was a neat freak, wouldn't that make me more responsible and want to clean up messes? 3.Can I care for my bird properly? Yes, I've been researching about turquoise green cheeked conures for 2 weeks, almost a month. Every day, I study and make documents learning about their habitat, food, needs, toxics, bonds, personality, temperament, history, common conditions, health, diet, etc. 4.Do I have room in my house for a bird cage and other "bird accessories"? Yes, I have already decided where to put the cage. One will be in this huge empty space in my living room, and his bed cage will be in a big space in my bedroom, so he can form a closer bond with me since I'm mostly in my bedroom. 5.Do I have time to give my bird what it needs? Yes, I have many hours, every day, especially on weekends, I can wake up earlier than my conure, and sleep later than it. 6.Exactly what type of bird and how many do I want? Male or Female, Turquoise Green Cheeked Conure. 7.Do you want to make this a long term commitment? From my studies to knowledge myself about conures, they live from 20-25 years, yes, me and my conure be together for long times :) Should I get one? Do you think I'm ready?

Your channel is overall a good way for people to begin to learn about budgie care. I just wanted to point out that mirrors are terrible for budgies, as they think they are other birds. You may think they enjoy them but this is NOT the case. It can be mentally harmful to your bird in various ways.

I have so many questions about bird care so HERE WE GO What if I go to school/I have to leave them for a # of hours but I have some time before and after school to care for them (how long can I leave them alone?) And what if my other family members aren't usually around in the house and they are left alone. Should I get 2 budgies? (Or considering adopting different species) I have pets (2 dogs) that sleep in my room. The place I am considering having the cage is out of reach for both of them so is that ok? Is it better to have 2 males or 2 females instead of 1 each. Or I heard that without a nest they wont breed. Is that true? What if a toy is similar to a nest amd they lay eggs? Or should I just stick with 1 or 2 of the same gender edit: well this summed up most of my questions ...for now

yes you can leave them but they will be sad so get a mate for them

I've been told that if you want the bird to really like you, to only get one. The birds also won't mate unless they have a mating box, so that won't be a problem.

I think something pivotal that the video does not explain is to see where the closest avian vet is to your home. Sometimes you need to contact a specialist for any health related concerns

Ok, I got most of this covered, having many hamsters. Hamsters and birds are similar, except for the age thing. So, If you are a hamster master, then you will be a very good bird owner (most of the time.)

Today I got my first (Not really)(Actually going to try to keep it alive) Budgie well four of them. And in the past hour or so I can hand feed them and kinda touch them, My sister who got them for me said that the two yellow ones are aggressive but they're actually really calm. Before the budgies came to live with my family, they lived outside for a year (In the freezing cold too). I'm really happy they kinda trust me but usually, it takes a couple of weeks or days to hand-feed budgies?

My budgies are very quiet, they seem to be 2 boys (as by your video, because where I bought they don’t say the gender) they also don’t eat anything different than seeds... ☹️ I try everyday, maybe they need more time! But we do love them!
