Great tips. After 30 years of designing and building decks, the only one I have to completely disagree with those is the "cupping"/rainbow orientation...now of course my experience is with pressure treated pine and synthetics primarily. Btw...great to see ya'lls videos in my feed again.

My deck disagrees with the cupping. All grains down it cups shedding water. all grains up it cups holding the water.

The decking screws are called flat head screws, and if you are going to pre-drill anyway, you can also countersink the flat head screws, which is flaring out the top of the hole you drilled to accommodate the wedge. They have special bits for that, and I think you can even set your depth with some countersink bits.
