When I was younger I always did my lat pulldowns behind my neck. I also used to do wide grip pullups (sometimes weighted) behind my neck. I never had a problem but I stopped doing them that way when I read that it might cause problems. I still do dumbbell lat pullovers and use the lat pullover machine when I can find it at a gym.

I’ve gotta say Laurence always been a big fan of the DB pullover and whenever I’ve had the chance I’ve used the pullover machine and it’s the one standalone piece of equipment I’ve always wanted

Craig, the pullover machine is called the upper body squat. No wonder you want one. I’m surprised they aren't more popular in gyms.

@@Fitand50Formula the old nautilus ones are super expensive as the use a chain mechanism rather than a cable or lever arm and I think here in the UK there’s only a couple of manufacturers that make them

Pull ups are a weird one for me. I do them both at home and in the gym. Never managed viable weighted pull ups despite being as high as 20K on weighted dips. At home I just use a door mounted chin up bar which limits how wide my hands go, pretty much similar to the width demonstrated in your vid. Short of clamping a dumbell between my knees (which I've tried and rejected as too uncomfortable) I don't have the facilities to do weighted pull ups, so it's higher reps instead. However, at the gym the pull up machine has quite a wide grip so no weights needed as I'm already doing fairly low reps. I burn out on wide grip and then switch to the neutral grip they have, so it acts like a kinda drop set. The difference in the hand positioning is quite striking, I usually manage another 5/6 reps For my third and final set I do actual drop sets, using the weighted knee rest.

I wonder if you could get a few more in if, after burning out on neutral grip, you switch to a chin-up.

What I heard and found to be true for me with the dumbbell pullover is the affected body part depends on the orientation of the arms. Doing it with straight arms affects my lats. Doing it with spread arms affects my chest. Thank you very much.

I work in pullovers frequently, and they tend to work my my pecs and triceps much more than my lats. My wife does them too, but not as frequently, and they hit mostly her lats. Our form is nearly the same. Interesting how the body plays to it's strengths.

Both muscle are stretched and contract with the movement, but I’ve never heard anyone say they feel it equally in both the chest and lats.

I do my pullovers on the ball. I find it way easier and safer to get on and off, especially with a heavier weight. Something to be said about straight vs crooked arms and mind muscle
