In my humble opinion, ratchet is more versatile than the right angle impact. It is light, and small and you can manually force tight bolts, or use your powerful impact gun. But if you only can have one tool for your garage, then the right angle is probably better.

@@Shoptoolreviews So if you can only get one, it would be the ratchet?? Doesnt the right angle impact kinda do both things but it just ratchets slower?
@XerxezsX

@@steakdave666 the electric ratchet has two parts, #1 it's like a regular ratchet were you use your hands and strength to loosen or tighten the bolts. and #2 once you loosen the bolts you have the electric part of it to spin the bolts in or out with the press of the trigger, this saves you energy and time, makes things way easier. The right angle impact wrench is way different, first it's is a very powerful power tool, this one shown in the video suppose to generate 170 ft.lbs of torque, a regular sedan's wheel nuts are torque to 80-90 ft.lbs, but this tool in actuality it's more like 230 ft.lbs. give or take, the impact wrench is for the bigger bolts that are hard to break by hand and you have to be careful because it's so powerful that you my break the bolts off.

@@steakdave666 You should watch other videos on how both tools are used by real mechanics, then go from there to see which one suits you better but if you're a professional mechanic you need both. As a Diy'er the ratchet will cover 80% of the work and a regular impact wrench will cover the rest with extension bars and wobble adapter, remember to have impact rated sockets because they will keep your impact wrench working at it's optimal performance.

Well explained, good video. The only reason you are "stopping" the socket with the ratchet is that your hand is flexing more than the angle needed to go to the next tooth in the ratchet assembly. As the gear reverses to advance to the next tooth, the spring action of your hand also reverses the anvil and pawls so they stay engaged in the same teeth on the gear and don't advance. In very few situations will that be an issue in the real world. Some rubber mounted items or resilient/spring mounted item can be an issue, but usually not. To illustrate the point, put the socket into a vise with wood shims and tighten it slowly while the socket spins. It will spin until it stops, but it won't continue to do what it did in your hand. Hope that made sense. Keep up the great content.

In my humble opinion, get both, simply because sometimes a normal impact gun/wrench won't get into tight places and using extensions will make you lose the torque you need to loosen/tighten bolts in said places. The ratchet wrench is convenient when trying to spin that bolt out quickly
@bumponlog

Funny that the impact wrenches also have much faster rpm than a ratchet in addition to actual torque. Besides the weight and head clearance (which will likely get less and less) ratchets seem inferior all around.

Great comparison Tim, I’d always thought the ratchet has much more power , I guess it’s just to screw and unscrew rather than crack like an impact would

When using a cordless ratchet, how do you know when a bolt is tightened enough? I only ratchet by hand and have a good feel for when to stop further torquing to prevent possibly stripping out the bolt. But with a cordless,, you don't have that type of feedback...

If I'm going to spend money on 1 which one should I get? I already have milwaukee impact driver. What i want is to get to small spaces and remove nuts and bolts faster without having to move back and forth on tight spaces. Like cars nowadays the space is getting tighter and smaller to work on. But if that bolt is stuck on a tight space what will i do?

I went with the ratchet because of its metal drivetrain and it's size. I defense had to distinguish between the ratchet and impact ratchet and found the regular ratchet fit my needs better.

Thanks, but I wonder which one I would want. I didn't hear anything about the differences I would notice when using, other than total power. I'm concerned that impact drivers might be breaking or damaging threads that wouldn't be damaged by a ratchet. I have only the observation that when I use my makita drill as a driver, I break about 1 fastener per 1,000 removed or replaced. When I use my makita impact driver (not impact gun), I break so many that I quit using it for anything I want to re-use, or anything expensive if the head breaks off. I'd guess 1 fastener broken for every 50 removed or replaced. It seems to me that the impact driver is causing impact damage to the shaft, and eventually fails fasteners that were never installed beyond their acceptable torque. I don't have any scientific proof of this, but I quit using mine.

Love me those electric impacts. They will snap bolts off though, gotta be careful. Especially if you're using an impact swivel, the angle sort of puts sideways pressure on the nut. Be sure you reduce the angle of the swivel as much as possible and that the socket is fully on the bolt head or but before hitting the go switch. It's often best to crack loose certain hard to reach bolts with an old long ratchet first then spin it out all the way with the impact.
@foam27
Жыл бұрын
If you have to do that, why use an impact at all? Just use an electric ratchet after manually cracking it then. I would just use the impact for cracking loose and removing, but not for tightening, unless you go slow when tightening, and manually torque.
@rustyshackelford7651
Жыл бұрын
@@foam27 well you don't know which nuts and bolts the impact will loosen until you try. I'm just saying they can and will break off nuts. I actually like the impact for tightening it's much easier on the wrists and arm muscles than a ratchet that's one of my primary uses for it. If I'm afraid my impact will snap a bolt like an exhausted manifold bolt, I'll usually use my long ratchet to loosen the bolt first just slightly like half a turn then I'll use the impact for the rest of the way. I always try to avoid as much actual ratcheting as possible. I don't get why people still buy the electric or pneumatic ratchets to be honest. I can't foresee myself ever using it over an impact. I guess it saves you the few seconds it takes to switch from a manual ratchet to the impact but that's not even commonly required. Plus the ratcheting mechanism in those isn't great, it's not as slim or maneuverable as a traditional ratchet also it's iffy putting serious torque on an electric or pneumatic ratchet.
