Notice how ill Bernard Youens as Stan Ogden looks. He didnt have long to go, and Albert Tatlock and Eddie Yeates and Maryon were soon to go too. Len Fairclough had left for good earlier in the year..The old faces were going and the programme was never quite as good again.

Fred Gee was a really nuanced character - sometimes nasty (like here about Marion being pregnant) extremely bitter (here again) and sometimes very vulnerable - a sad, lonely man. And when he had a funny plot, his disasters were hilarious - the 'raffling the Rover' one from early 1984 is a pretty much forgotten masterpiece I think. All down to great writing and acting of course.

Doris Speed was amazing, she created a perfect Annie Walker. Someone filled with delusions of grandeur (the Beaumonts' of Clitheroe) and confident about asserting her superiority over Fred and Bette, less so Betty/Elizabeth and obviously Hilda, but anxious around people who she thought she might not match up to, or wanted to impress or intimidate. The ever perceptive Mrs Sharples captured this perfectly when she commented that Mrs Walker would be swallowed up in some of the elite districts around Manchester; she was far better off playing the dowager duchess (or Madame du Barry, as Bette amusingly called her once) in her back street pub. But she wasn't just a straight up and down insufferable snob, she was more complex, she did have compassion for people in amongst the judgement and prejudice. She could be sensitive and caring towards her friends and neighbours, even Hilda, though I doubt it stretched to the Duckworth's. She obviously loved and missed her late husband and had to live with the hurt of having kids who never made her a priority. Doris Speed made Annie funny too, especially she was the butt of a joke she didn't get - mistaking being sent up for the flattery she adored.

It was the same with two other popular characters- Minnie Caldwell and Ena Sharples. Their last scenes were low key and when they left the street they were barely mentioned again. It's a shame Annie wasn't given a proper send off after 23 years on the cobbles something similar to Hilda's exit in 1987. Sadly, it wasn't to be.
@denismoynihan4996
2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately no one knew this was to be her final scene as she was to exit due to illness with the intention of returning. While she was off her home where she lived alone was broken into and she ended her days in a nursing home to nervous to return to her own home. While there the media discovered her true age and published it which broke her . Listing to her lines in this episode her speech was slow sadly. Likewise the actors Minnie and Ena both took personal time off the show with the intenion of returning unfortunately due to illness and age it was not to be. One has to remember the mojority of the original cast were elderly when they joined Coranation Street so obviously age was not in their favour. In Hilda's case the producers were aware Hilda was leaving and had the opportunity to plan the exit she deserved.

I can't wait to see the back of Fred Gee. He is a revolting man, and I'm glad Elsie put him in his place I remember reading a newspaper article about Fred Feast after he died as a kid in the late 1990s. He used to brag that he could fit so many ringed donuts on a certain part of his anatomy. Dirty old man Alf is another old woman at times. Sad to see Annie go, I've been watching Coronation Street since last November from late 1970 onwards, by various uploaders It's been enjoyable, seeing a young Bet and other characters I barely remember I don't like this early version of Jack Duckworth, he changed over time. Vera can be funny, but what a mouth! Not as good as Stan and Hilda were though I can see how old and frail some of the older cast members have become over a 13 year period Ena Sharples was another great character. And I liked Eddie The Websters are starting to come in now. I think I'll stop watching around the mid-80s, especially with Elsie and Eddie going

Y'know, there are times when i have to admit that Annie Walker ( Doris Speed) looks like a twinkly Sparkly little Fairy Queen She certainly exudes a regal baring & as someone in the comments said, Annie doesnt always need lines, she just has to give one of her tungsten blue steel looks & well... she can liquify a steel bolt! I watched a 1961 Corrie with Jack & Annie in the Rovers & shes still the same Queen of the Rovers, a smile to melt the hardest heart & the Look to freeze the blood Poor Jack... It was dreadful the way the producers treat Doris Speed after the sterling work shed done over the years! It finished that poor actress off! Doesn't Marian look pretty recently! That's what love does ...lol Also Deirdre looks stunning during these end 1970s & 1980s She definately has had cosmetic Dentistry, as in the early days she had funny little pixie teeth. However she is quite beautiful Cheers 🇬🇧👧
