The church of San Francesco was begun in 1246 on land donated by the Municipality of Cortona to Frate Elia, who was probably also the designer of the church, already officiated in 1254 but consecrated only in 1374, as stated on the plaque on the facade. The interior, with a single nave with a trussed roof, is typical of Franciscan churches. In the late sixteenth century the church underwent the typical transformation of the Counter-Reformation consisting in the cancellation of the frescoes in order to obtain a more austere space and in the addition, starting from the end of the sixteenth century, of large and monumental side altars of great formal value. The Presbytery is occupied by the high and valuable Tabernacle of the High Altar, the work of Bernardino Radi of 1619, behind which you can admire, climbing the stairs, the Reliquary of the Holy Cross, a work dating back to the 10th century, donated to Brother Elia in 1244 by the Emperor of Nicea John III to keep a fragment of the Holy Cross brought to Cortona from Constantinople by the Franciscan, successor of Francis at the helm of the Conventual Franciscan Friars.
