Hi Patrick, Patrick here. 67 Year old man living in Sarande,Albania. I live like a king here on less than $700 dollars a month. Most of the expats here know the value we have here and understand that the Albanians make very little money so we always help the out as much as we can. I have lived in a $400 dollar a month two bedroom apartment just a half a mile from the water.

Hey Patrick, I thought I would add a comment to this one also for any readers wondering what other think of Albania. From an early age, I have identified as a "traveler," influenced by my father's Roma heritage and my mother's mixed Native ancestry. Our family has always embraced a nomadic lifestyle for various reasons, while maintaining a stable home base to recuperate. Eastern Europe presents an appealing destination, accommodating both those who prefer to remain in one location and those seeking a temporary "base camp." For over ten years, I have been considering Albania (I've been there once before) as I approach retirement, which I anticipate will be under $1,000 per month. I hope to rely on my VA benefits for medical needs in the event of a serious health issue. Albania is likely to serve as my primary departure point for exploring Europe and North Africa, with Tennessee as my anchor in the United States and the Philippines for my travels in Asia. What your sharing in these videos, as your perspective, is priceless for those considering an "expat" lifestyle be it full time of short...

Excellent breakdown man, most people don't sit down and do the math... I'm originally from Albania and i thought life would be cheaper in 🇺🇸 America but it is tough. What kills me is the insurance costs in America, the hard working Americans have piss poor insurance coverage with essential no coverage due to high insance deductibles. In Albania 🇦🇱 i always find it more freedom, and u should think of buying a house in Albania because homes are made out of concrete & u never have to worry about rot and mold. You can find a good deal but rent is also ok. After a few years i think u will realize that buying a house is a good investment.

Hey Patrick, just stumbled upon your channel. I left the USA (Texas) for very similar reasons as you mentioned in this video. I had a mortgage on a modest house ($80K) My payment jumped almost $300 a month in 2 years due to the escow part of my payment. Property tax and property insurance took my payment from $738 per month to $1032 a month back in 2016. That was the final straw for me. The tax assessor revalued the house at $130K in 1 fell swoop and they did that to almost every property in my neighborhood. I saw the handwriting on the wall and left while I could. I moved to rural Hungary and purchased an old farm with a house, barn and 4200m2 land for $21K. I had to pay a 1 time 4% transfer tax and that was it no reoccurring property tax. Yes, the house needed work but was livable. I never even thought about Albania back then. If I had I would have given it a look. Thanks for sharing your story.

How simple was it for you to move to Hungary? We are looking into Albania because it seems the simplest. I don't know if we can afford Hungary. Would love to move to Hungary. Use to live in Vienna and loved it. Then my family moved back to Texas. Have struggled with depression ever since with the dream of going back. Vienna is just not doable.

@@kellyrhoads1067 I will not try to convince anyone as to whether Hungary or Albania is the better choice. Everyone's needs and situation will be different. It was fairly easy to come to Hungary and obtain residency. I had been looking at property in Bulgaria, Hungary, Spain, Portugal .Hungary at the time 2017 seemed the most affordable as to cost of purchasing or leasing property. I spoke with numerous estate agents and I came to the conclusion that for the money I could afford I could get a livable property that was in my price range in a decent village. I spoke with the Hungarian embassy in Washington DC. They told me to come to Hungary after I had decided to purchase a property once everything was finalized and was planning to stay and then apply for residency at the nearest Foreigners office which I did. You can come to Hungary as an American with a valid US Passport and remain in the EU Shengen zone for 90 days out of every 180 days with just a passport. I applied and was told that a decision would be made on my application within 90 days which it was almost 80 days before I received my residency permit in the post. What they look for is you must have either a 1 year or longer lease agreement in your name , or someone who will allow you to stay with them like a relative that will put it in writing or a purchase contract or deed for the property you are living at. They will check on you with an in person visit. They did show up at my house after I applied. Your proposed accommodation must have a legal address. A season house or wine house will not be acceptable unless it is in a village and has a legal address assigned to it. You will need proof of expat health insurance acceptable to the Hungarian foreigners office, Proof of income, bank statements from your bank, I am not sure what they currently want to see for income but back in 2017 I think it was 1200 USD per month. You will not be allowed to work unless you apply for and get approved for a residency permit allowing you to work. If you can find a Hungarian employer that will hire you and help with the paperwork you could probably get employment permission or you may qualify as a digital nomad, an entrepreneur or maybe as a full time student. Hungary can be affordable outside of Budapest and the Lake Balaton areas. Things have changed since I moved here. Now Residency permits are submitted online at a website called enterHungary ran by the government. You can manage the application yourself without hiring a attorney or firm that handles residency cases. I am retired and renewing my residency is fairly easy if you are internet savvy. I will say had I thought about Albania or any of the other former parts of Yugoslavia I would have given them a look also. You should check out Albania and Hungary for sure. Let me know if I can help further.

I am an Albanian and I can confirm all he said is correct. Albania's rent and real estate is one tenth of the prices in major North American cities. Food: vegetables and fruits one fifth to one tenth of the prices in North America, meat and cheese is a bit cheaper then here but not by much, eating out one forth to half for the higher end. Gas is more expensive then here, because it is difficult for the government there to collect taxes so they put a lot of other stuff under gas, electricity and water. $30 for a doctor's visit. I would recommend sticking to Tirana (the capital), even chose a dwelling that is closer to the hospital neighborhood and not the city center (Mother Teresa hospital or QSTU (Qendra Spitalore Universitare)) , if you are over 50 as that is where the best hospitals and clinics are, Durres is a close second plus is just 30 minutes from Tirana. Nature is beautiful. Climate is great. History very, very rich. Low and order much better then in the States and even Canadian major cities or London or Paris.

You didn't mention rent or mortgage for where you live. House might be paid off, however most people are not that lucky, If you add in rent or mortgage in US comparted to Albania you are looking at $2500-3000 easy in total, compared to $300 rent in Albania plus the other costs. Such a huge difference.

Albania in next two decades will be the Dubai of Balkans rich and very developed , its worth investing now there rather than in next two decades will be very very developed ! I remember Albani 2000 and Albania 2023 it’s amazing development and probably in next two decades they will be more and more advanced and as many analysts show this nation could be the Dubai or Milan of Balkans ! @@JayandSarah agree no one is same as other ! I say Dubai as a comparison to have a idea same as Dubai tower and structure are thousand of cities , thanks to god I am highly informed but Albania has lost 2 generation with their property blocked and in two generation all Europe progress so one person from EU since 1944-1991 have not seen one Albanian (becouse Albania was not allowed to go in west or east and have no property ) so basically i can feel a nation which has progress and not , another thing is that in Albania 10,000 thousand youth (gender woman) are highly good in math and in university degree (better than their Albanian man) taking this into consideration than woman make progress of society more than man mean a future advance into Albania high intellectual as well (if a nation has woman educated they have family and society developed ) of course Albania has 2.5 mil people , not 25 mil and not 65 milion and I smile when I see many data comparing Albanian small same as Malta or Slovenia or some Baltic with big nation with 15 mil or 36 mil people (that even using the probability has more power of market etc etc ) so considering this and many factor Albania is very very high potential but I agree with you this world we live in is very very big and of course Albania is a very very small part of the world , however been small is on top 15 world nation in olive production and on top 20 world tourism destination , and this mean that even geographically Albania is better than media show , however important is to understand that what will be the future and understand that in fact no any other citizen is better or worse than the other is just a bigger nation vs small nation, for example if you see a wrestling match one person weight 100 kg don’t do match with one 60 kg (meaning are two different category ) same for Albania as a small nation in my opinion from 1-10 is about 7 in the developing and maybe 8 but is subjective all the things ! So I wish to you happy December holidays and happy month !

Yeap. Property taxes are the Texas scam you never hear about because most Texas are too dense to realize they're getting ripped. In Dallas or Houston you pay nearly 3X the property taxes as in Cali. That adds up huge over time especially as your house value goes up. Nothing worse than having a huge annual tax on your shelter. Texas is a scam.
