The Flanker probably scored so high because, due to it's targeting limits, the pilot was forced to only shoot missiles at a single target, and then only engage the next after the first was destroyed. This prevented wasting missiles on targets that had already been shot down.

The power of modern RADAR is in the return data processing - not whether it's a mechanical scanner or AESA - AESA vastly improves multitasking and other aspects of RADAR capabilities but not necessarily range. I would bet on tranche 3 onwards Typhoon to find and locate targets in the distance as well if not better than any other fighter based RADAR. This is why the Eurofighter AESA project is so late and drawn out - AESA prototypes are struggling to match let alone beat later iterations of CAPTOR-M at long-range track and scan - It's a beast as was its Blue Vixen daddy. AESA modules tend to overheat in high power (long range scan) modes - therefore they go into a cooling strategy (firing alternate grids of modules) which greatly limits range - meanwhile CAPTOR-M can operate at full power for hours.

Cap you need to do this kind of attack on the West coast with the Chinese as the attacking Country. But instead of one aircraft carrier strike group, put in everything they have now. Something close to the Pearl Harbor Attacking size. Or even an Attack on Hawaii basically as the Japanese did and even have some Amphibious Ships to try to Invade as the Japanese were planning on doing until They Figured Out They Woke A Sleeping Giant!!! With tons of data on how these things track relative to the predicted path at multiple altitudes, I imagine the strategy will be during a conflict they release thousands or tens of thousands of these cheap high altitude balloons headed for the mainland. With an unknown payload (I doubt chemical warfare but they could just hold a couple dozen cheap tiny bombs) they must be shot down diverting resources able to defend Taiwan. It's a brilliant way to do 2 things. First to deplete America's most advanced air dominance munitions due to the altitude. Second drastically accelerate American energy weapon research.

Before watching the video: You don't need to be FAST to catch balloons. And since they're not put HIGH up there... I'd go with an A-10. Just a short "BRRRT" per balloon and a ton of endurance it can knock out a dozens each. If they were ultra high altitude, then the F-15EX or F-22 would have an edge. I'd put my money on the F-15EX with it's extra AA loadout. (Also the advantage of all guns is that there's less blue on blue friendly fire fragging with all those missiles. *looking at the usual GR crew* ahem.
@jimrussell4062

Not sure if it destroys the chaotic fun of a GR session, but some target coordination would let you kill more (less missile wasting by targets getting killed by 2-3 missiles at once) Other than that, good show!

unfortunately, guns aren't all that useful against balloons. the Canadians used a pair of CF-18's to shoot down a balloon years and years ago. ultimately, both CF-18's expended over a 1000 rounds of 20mm ammunition into the balloon, and it took hours for the balloon to slowly descend. high velocity munitions just pass straight through the ballon without imparting much energy to it

So, only one of the objects shot down has been positively identified as being a balloon from China. The other objects are, as of this time, unidentified. It's been posited that one of the objects was a pico balloon launched by amateur radio enthusiasts. The balloon is described as a "silver mylar 32-inch sphere" and was downed by an AIM-9X. I think it would be interesting to see if an AIM-9X is capable of even acquiring, let alone hitting, a 32" spherical target generating not much more heat than background.

If the balloons are used as a resource depleting action, how would the defending group respond? If attackers were to arm these balloons with guided drop bombs prior to an invasion, these could easily overwhelm defenses and deplete their resources prior to the invasion.

This was the original strategy concept about 20 years ago when the CCP started weaponizing airships. They saw how hard it was for fighters to shoot down a stray Canadian weather balloon and it gave them ideas. They chose Hainan Island as the main airship base to maximize odds of crossing Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and then the USA and Canada in a mass release. They specifically mentioned releasing hundreds of them each day during an invasion of Taiwan, just to tie up aircraft to intercept them. A cost effective distraction to fix air assets away from Taiwan.
