Keep in mind that I am Italian and with imported Douglas-fir wood I have furnished half the house by making custom-made furniture. Western Forest Product wood, cost 2000€/m3. Wood worked in BC. In Europe, Douglas fir was once used for doors and windows. It was paid as gold because red wood was in fashion and was very resistant even with a few treatments. Today PVC and aluminum have completely replaced coniferous wood, while something resists with precious hardwoods or super cheap woods such as pine and Norway spruce. What are they doing with this Douglas fir today?

@BjarneButler

Yup. The big chopper has a grapple on the end of a 250ft cable that picks up the logs. And they have a ground crew that flags the good pieces from the garbage and bucks anything that’s too heavy or wasn’t bucked by the fallers

Right now is a very tough time finding work. Even harder if your a rookie/trainee. Best bet would be to find work up northern BC in oil & gas sector. I’m currently out of work but I have a few leads on some work this winter. Getting your level three first aid helps. Would recommend getting the right business insurance too. Do lots of networking. Be willing to work in any location but don’t work for anybody with a bad reputation( from several sources). When you do get a job always be looking for and have a lead on another job too cuz things can change at a moments notice.

forgive my ignorance, but these trees are for wood? What I see is that when they weigh so much they break, how are you going to take it? with that steep slope?
@BjarneButler
3 жыл бұрын
We buck them based on weight and they are flown out by helicopter
@Jona_Villa
3 жыл бұрын
If they are taken away by helicopter it means that they are logs of the highest quality and value destined for the trade of the finest wood and expensive. They are probably the best Douglas-firs on the market (for export in my opinion).
