It is saddening to see how cruel and critical we are to each other. How the lesson of "If you have nothing nice to say, then don't say anything" has been lost on so many. This woman has done her best on a tiny budget to feed her family and all of the internet nutritionist have come out of the woodwork to crucify her. Thank you Rhoda for making this video and for sharing what you have learned the hard way.

I've been in this lady's shoes before...lifting every single seat cushion for coins and rolling pennies for a box of mac & cheese and a pack of hot dogs so my kids could eat that night while my darling husband was eating out with friends/co-workers that same night. You do what you have to do to feed your children. For those wanting to bust on Rhoda and NOT bothering to offer up even the smallest solution... there is no reason not to have even a container garden to grow your own veggies. You can still get a pack of seeds at walmart for 20 cents. For less than $1.00, you can grow lettuce, carrots, radishes in a kitchen window. I also have a hanging planter for my cherry tomatoes. Want to get adventurous, plant a cucumber to grow up a small trellis in the corner, or even a pepper plant. Just remember that anything growing above ground from flowers has to be pollinated. Doing it by hand with a paint brush works well.

Fairie Dust Last year I attempted to grow watermelon, lemon cucumber, tomatoes and radishes in my garden. The results were abysmal. The watermelon grew no bigger than the size of my fist (and we had to water it A LOT), the radishes turned out so small and molded before they could be harvested. The tomatoes yielded maybe 10 for the entire growing season (across 3 different plants - and the neighbor's dog came in and ate the half that ripened. The other half we fried green.) and our sole winner in the garden turned out to be the lemon cucumber, which yielded far more than I could possibly eat in a season. What am I doing wrong?!

I feed my family of 4 on $100 a week including diapers, toiletries and other things needed. I try my hardest to serve a verity of healthy food but it isn't easy. If it wasn't for WIC we wouldn't eat an fruits or viggies. With Christmas coming up I'm trying to cut back on my food budget even more so we can get the kids gifts for the first time in about 5 years. People can judge all they want but until they been in that situation they have no clue what its like or how hard it is.

Meat veggies and rice is all you need. I feed a family of 5 for less than 100 each week. As long as you have rice and eggs, your Ok. We eat Asian and Mexican style food. It is so cheap and easy and not processes. The only canned things I buy are tomato sauce and sardines. We love sardines over some white rice and an apple on the side. I shop at an Asian market and cardenas and they have apples on sale all the time. Last week Fuji apples were on sales 3 lbs for 99c. If we didn't eat so many fruit and veggies our bill would be less bit the kids are crazy about carrots broccoli, apples, Bananas... They'll eat that stuff raw. Unfortunately there isn't a farmers market close by. The closest one is 30 minutes. What I might save on my bill I'd probably just spend in gas. When your on a budget, you do what you have to though

John Doe ...frozen vegetables are similar in price to canned and there is absolutely no proof that fresh is in any way superior to them. Also, with canned veggies, so long as you look at the label and make sure they're not tossing in tons of garbage--they're still fine. Unless you only eat fresh, raw vegetables--the ones you eat contain about the same nutritional content because tons of nutrients are lost in cooking and "I would rather eat french fries than canned vegetables," is one of the most ludicrous and stupid things I've read on the internet. Most people would rather french fries than canned vegetables...because they taste good. But implying that they share the same nutrient content is absolutely absurd.
@DavidHernandez-oc1oz

+John Doe I'm so glad you are able to buy fresh veggies but not everyone can do that. In this instance her adding canned veggies would be better than the veggies she isn't eating now. Plus frozen veggies can sometimes be more nutritious than fresh depending on how far the fresh veggies travelled and I know they can be purchased for a good price at the stores she mentioned

Way to go! Such determination and feeling of agency and abilities to mange to own, I sense in this video. No depression, no bitterness, no explanations of the unfair hardships making it necessary to be this cost efficient and budget aware. Thats just such an inspiring mentality, and I simply love it. Im certain there will come a time when more fish, steak, relish fruit slices e.g. will find its way into this responsible budgetting and planning. The foundation for future successfully managing of budgets and household certainly are laid and children will grow up knowing the worth of money and the worth of being able to eat good and healthy and sometimes the more precious foods too. It would be hard for any teenager to get lost in the world of consumerism and brainless spending and not saving, with this insight into the sometimes necessary struggle for stretching the budget.

I think it's pretty smart of her to know how to shop cheap and be able to feed her family on such a small amount. My neighbors taught me a few things, their car was wiped out by a UPS truck, I then for a couple months gave them a ride all the time when need be. I took them to places I never shopped at like Dollar Tree, Eagles foundation etc. I was spending about 200 to 350.00 every week until I walked in to the $ store and seen I could triple the amount of food and feed my family longer.

Today Hubby and I went to two different stores...him on the way to work and me to the closest one, to get Chickens at $2.90 a kilo. Normally the cheapest on special is $3.50 a kilo. If you replaced the meat in half the meals with home-cooked dried beans and used the savings to replace half the potatoes/white rice/or plain pasta with cooked whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, wild rice) or whole grain pasta plus fresh or frozen non-starchy veggies and some fresh or frozen fruit, you would have much better nutrition while still saving money.

You have done a fine job, thank you for your expertise. The only thing I'd add to this is for you to chat up the produce people. There are certain times they put up the bruised or ripe fruits and veggies, for manager specials. You may get a bunch of ripe bananas for 49 cents, or so. Same goes for a tomato, cucumber, or head of lettuce to make a nice fresh salad with. There is no sin in only buying exactly what you need to round out a meal.

I never understood why people say such negative comments on videos when the person went of their way to make it and share it with everyone,, if it is not for you then simply move on, no need to be so critical. why not post your own video showing your meals that include what you like to cook and share your ideas instead of being so negative

Dawn Ny She was not nasty. just posing legitimate question. This is not a healthy way to eat. foreverxyours3456 Did you read the rest of the comments? You could eat healthier than this for the exact same $. - Eating THIS badly will affect your health, even SHORT TERM. - I'm saying there are better ways to spend your $30. - - Beans, rice, potatoes, eggs, pasta, cabbage, frozen chicken, frozen veggies, are pretty cheap. - And growing your own vegetables and greens is nearly free. - And I think a lot of these packaged things only appear cheap, but aren't really. - like those little packets of "lunch meat," sure it's only 89cents, but there's nothing in there.. not a good deal on a per-ounce basis. (& what's in there isn't really proper food..) - So you do what you must when times are tight, but what is the best way? That's what I'm getting at.

I'm on a very tight budget myself, I buy fresh produce but it's mostly veggies/fruits that are in season and on sale. I watch for sales on brown rice and whole grain breads. So if the rice is usually $10 for a large bag and it's on sale for $5, I will purchase 2 of them. Same with any of the dry goods I buy. If bread is on sale too, I will buy a few and freeze them. Coconut oil is usually $10.00 for a fairly good sized jar and can be used to replace margarine and oil, it lasts longer and is better for you. I always buy 2 cartoons of 18 large eggs every month, and a big block of cheese. As for meat, I usually don't eat meat. If I do I look for sales on turkey or chicken. I get most of my protein from eggs and beans. I spend about $100/month on groceries now, and don't eat out anymore. I make all of my meals now :)

Sedonia Dragotta I agree it is expensive, I would love to grow my own fruits and veggies but where I live 7 months of the year is nothing but snow and near -40 lol I've attempted to have plants in my apartment and they always die, maybe I'm just not a green thumb kinda person? One day I'll have a nice little home with a good chunk of land and then I'll have a beautiful garden. :)

There is nothing wrong with this food! Many of our parents and grandparents were raised on these cheap home cooked meals. Yes, it needs more fruit and veg but those are expensive. Keep in mind that anything home cooked, from scratch, is better for you than fast food or processed/deep fried junk. I applaud this lady for her ingenuity.

+Really Seriously Seriously, it is possible to buy fruit and veggies inexpensively-frozen is often a good value and canned is a second best. Some stores often discounted produce that has some blemishes or is a little past it's prime but still OK to eat. Canned fruit in juice is a good buy also and can be purchased at the stores she mentioned

Hello, I´ve got a question. I´m from Europe and in Europe, especially in European Union, all products must be labeled with complete information about the exact contents of ingredients. I´m not sure if it is the same in America and other non-European countries. But from what I know, the cheaper product, the worse quality it is. For example, it is impossible for a meat product to be incredibly cheap without being full of flour, additives that give it a taste, a color and above all - that make it look bigger. But there can be only about 40% of meat itself, the rest is just a kind of filling. So are you sure you eat well? Or are you just eating something that fills your stomach? I mean - I know that you are in a hard situation. I was in your situation too. But I still preferred eating less amount of food (but healthy food), to eating a big amount of food that would have probably worsened my health if I had eaten it longer.

DanaPatriciaMary1 The US has similar standards, and anything farmed has to be regulated by the multiple agencies. Foods labeled as "USDA organic" and other such things also go through rigorous hoops. More laws regarding said regulations are passed every year, so that the amounts that are required in order to be listed as a product are there (for example fruit juice vs fruit drink, and they have to list the % of juice in the product). The meat products particularly are labeled according to fat percentage, and they do add a red dye to color it. I do not believe they add anything to flavor it, but the cheapest meats here are factory farmed, which aren't really healthy anyway. The animals are fed junk to make them fatter including steroids and sometimes antibiotics to keep them from getting sick. You are right about the cheaper generally being less healthy. It is true in America, too. Produce costs more than a can of peaches or tomatoes or whatever. Enriched white bread costs less than whole grain wheat. High quality cooking oils cost more than a mixed vegetable oil... etc. She mentioned that she had kids, so I understand what you're saying about eating less but healthier (I would rather as well), but at the same time as parents we can't send our kids to bed hungry, and while it's okay if we eat smaller portions, what we're feeding our kids has to be able to sustain their growing bodies throughout the days and weeks. It is much harder to eat healthy with kids (though most parents make substitutes when they can afford them).

There is definitely such a thing as eating TOO cheaply, and I worry about the health of anyone who ate like that longterm. That said, sometimes the wolf comes to the door and we have to do the beat we can. Thank you for posting this and helping other people who may be in dire circumstances. I hope things turn around for you soon.

@queenepstein _ What on earth do you mean, "they WON'T eat it?" - If they are hungry, - they will eat it. - Don't take them to McDonald's, or order pizza.. Teach them about health. Have them help prep your meals. - and by all means ask them what they like.. - but make it clear that what is served for dinner is what they get. - and: "thank you very much mom!" is to follow!

These food item are not all that bad.Only thing i wouldn't eat is hot dogs and can ham, sodium is high. But when have very little money you do what you must to feed a family, All the negative people ,you might eat healthy but in the end GOD DON'T LIKE UGLY ,,,I would eat what i had to and have a good heart then to eat out of my mean food and be ugly.
