First of all, I would like to congratulate you on the incredible videos. I marvel at your creations. Secondly, I think your idea of creating shifts between day and night is excellent. However, I wonder if it would be possible to implement a system that uses real time as a parameter to define the periods of the day, using the player's device's own system clock. This would provide an even more realistic immersion.

This is a fun idea in theory, but keep in mind that some people can only play at certain times of day, say at night after the kids are in bed. You presumably don't want them only ever get to experience 'Nighttime 10pm-12am' so coding it to real time would potentially greatly negatively impact the playability of your game.

The click timer stuff looked to be important to include in this cycle, but I couldn't get the entire code to type..
@vimi
Жыл бұрын
If you need to, you can freezeframe some of the code I provided, but I left it intentionally vague, because your game will have different needs! As long as you get the concept of the "while" statement, the "if/else" statements, and how to set python variables with "$", you can figure out everything else! For the click timer code, the only code I displayed was the stuff that manipulated the background; the code manipulating the day/night cycle itself was very similar to the base day/night cycle setup! I showed that code mostly to show that you can divide up the time into as many segments as would be useful to you, and you can let those variables be controllers for other game states.

I'm coming back with another question one year later. 😂 What's the advantage of using "show" for a background image as opposed to "scene"?
@vimi
Жыл бұрын
When you use "scene", every image that is "shown" after is considered part of that scene. When you use "hide scene" it will not just remove the background, but every other image that is part of that "scene" Normally, that's a very beneficial feature, but sometimes, you don't want everything to disappear with a single scene. In those instances, you'd want to use "show".

So what if I wanted to use a map instead of having buttons to navigate? I’m assuming I’d have to make it so that if the cycle changes, every button on the map changes to a button that sends you to a version of the map depending on what time it is? I’m confused lol. If you can pls make a map version of this tutorial haha. Also thanks for the tutorial, honestly very beginner friendly
@vimi
7 ай бұрын
Yeah, that solution makes sense. That's probably close to what I'd do. I'd maybe make a different map for each time of day, and change the loop so you went from one map to another. Honestly, there are tons of possibilities and ways to implement something like that, and different methods will have different positives and negatives. As long as you think through your process, and start from something simple and build from there, you should have a relatively easy time making something that works for your game.

Hey, great video - again! What I still don't get, so anyone please help me, is following: to "start" the game you need the label start. but i see you using labels for a lot of different actions and stuff to implement. Now I'd like to know, if it "doesn't matter" where you punch in a laberl to, eg create a day/night cycle? Can you also dedicate completely different *.rpy files to certain stuff you want to include in your game? like creating a daynight.rpy with just the code of the day/night cycle in it? How is this then executed in the game or where does it have to be to function correctly? (Maybe it was also covered in another video, tutorial or documentary) Sorry if those questions are weird - sometimes i might overcomplicate things and processes. Dunno really, but help/an answer would still be highly appreciated!
@vimi

Ren'py parses your entire game folder for any .rpy files - you can make a separate folder IN that game folder filled with .rpy files, and ren'py will still find it! Wherever you place a label, ren'py will find it, and can jump or call to it.

You want to make sure you have a variable set for "location" before you get to the if/elif statements. In this case, I make sure that the default location is "home", and at the end of every day, I set the location for "home" again. I didn't include sample code for this one because I add to it more every few minutes, and I wanted to focus on general architecture versus the specifics of the code, since this day/night system might not work for every type of game. Yes and yes? For two - yes, that is possible, and there are lots of ways to go about it, so find one that works for your situation.

For example: if I am in the city it shows the default city background, but if it was bombed, for example, then the background changes into a bombed city, if it is high crime rate it shows some people fighting in the background etc.. (and there are x amount of versions to this background). I am looking for something like: show [citybackground] where citybackground variable is changing, however when I try storing a "bg cityversion1" "bg cityversion2" "bg cityversion3" in a variable it doesn't work after the show command. I don't want to make the "if/else" check every time I go there, I want a variable to store the latest background version of that location and then I just call the show and the background image automatically changes based on the current value stored in [citybackground]. Can this be done ?

On the Ren'py Launcher, under "build distributions", there are options for Android and iOS builds. When you press either of those, you can run emulators to test the game in those emulated environments, and you can create builds based on the different packages you may need. You may need to download and install certain SDKs, and I'd highly suggest testing these devices natively. kzitem.info/news/bejne/zpVjuKiJpXdyoHY At the time code here, you can see on day 366, I reset the total number of days to 1, and made the loop go back to September; you can keep this loop going FOREVER. If you wanted to keep track of the actual day total, or even the number of years (including leap years), you can just keep adding loops on top of these. There are more efficient ways to keep track of these, but for beginners, this might be the easiest way to keep everything laid out!

@@fraxbnezl From what I recall, "define" sets a variable before the init phase (along with character names), while "default" sets it during the init phase. So functionally the same for most devs, but if you're doing something a little more complicated, knowing that order of operations will make a huge difference!
