Today, we’re going to make a colorful burst using digital alcohol ink in Procreate. I really enjoyed working with these bright, vibrant colors. This concept is not about filling the entire canvas. The goal is to create a fairly minimal burst in the middle of the piece and focus on what shape emerges as the colors play off of each other.
To begin, I select the Flat Inker brush in a blue color. I’m going to use this brush to add a few little blobs in the center of the canvas in different colors. I manipulate these blobs with the blender brushes afterward…at this point, I realize that my blobs are a bit off-center, so I select the move tool and I turn on snapping. This gives me an idea of where the center of the canvas is, so I can adjust accordingly. Next, I select my Liquify Blender brush to drag the color outward so that it fades out.
At this point, I decide that I want a bit more concentrated color, so I again select my Flat Inker brush and add a few more blobs, using my Liquify Blender to fade them out just as I did previously.
Next, I selected my Ink Pool Edger in the color “Clone” to add definition to the edges of these fades. This brush takes the color from wherever you start the brush stroke.
I use my Smoky brush in a bright pink shade to create additional texture in order to smooth, blend, and add visual interest.
Switching to my eraser tool and turning the opacity quite far down, I choose my Add Ink Depth Texture brush and use it as an eraser, adding the faintest of textures to the darker areas.
Next, I select adjustments - liquify, and keep the size about halfway up. I’m on push (the first option), and I’m going to use this liquify filter with my pen in order to push this color a little bit more out towards the edges of the canvas.
Now I choose the Spray Blender brush to add some splatter to the piece. Moving on from Liquefy, I’m taking the brush and splattering it inward towards the painting from the white area. I’m splashing the white up onto the color as if I had sprayed alcohol, which creates a beautiful effect of little bubbles.
Selecting my Color Splatter brush, I add a few more splashes in blue and pink.
Now I’m choosing the White Splatter brush in a white shade, and I’m tapping this brush mostly off of the color so that just a little bit of it shows up. I’m going for very subtle white splatters as I don't want to overpower what's already going on. I’m really enjoying the texture and the color fades that are happening in the middle of this piece. Just a couple of little white splatters along the edges make it look a bit more realistic.
Adding a new “metallics” layer on top of everything, I choose my Metallic Ink Liner (from the same brush set) in a goldish-yellow shade to add some sparkle along some of the darker edges. My Fine Glitter brush adds just a bit more to the same areas where I have already put the bigger flakes...just to add a bit more sparkle and variety in size.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and that you are feeling excited to experiment with this shape and the techniques we discussed today! I’ll see you next time.
