This is quite possibly the simplest dry / wet fly there is, the Crackleback. The Crackleback is a versatile fly that can be used as a dry, wet, or nymph and can be fished upstream or downstream. It's often used in the Midwest but can also be productive in the West. The fly is nondescript enough to represent anything "buggy" and can be fished in many different ways without switching flies. Ed Story of Feather-Craft created the Crackleback in St. Louis in 1952 or the mid-1950s. It was originally tied with dubbing and then switched to turkey shorts when the dubbing became unavailable.
