The way he deletes beautiful shapes so casually bothers me. Like I know he's confident and comfortable with his art, and he can draw them again or make them better. His level of experience is far beyond my beginner level.

concept artists cant afford to be prescious with their art, cus the directors will push them around and make them redo everything until its perfect. And that perfect design might be one they did earlier along the line, its tough. In gen its good to not be too precious cus then you improve faster ^^

As someone who moved from 'traditional' (pen/pencil/paper) art to digital art after about 20 years I can say I've massively under utilized many of the lasso/warp tools... Seeing you mashup a design from several different silhouettes made it so clear how useful they actually are. Thank you so much.

Thank you! I’ve been working on trying to draw the creatures in my hallucinations as accurate as I can but since I can’t exactly take a picture of what I’m drawing it’s been harder to conceptualise. It’s like drawing something you saw in your dream, you’ve not got a hard reference of what you’re drawing since it’s almost fluid, every time you see it it changes a bit but not enough where you notice.
@GUYGUY_idk
Жыл бұрын
Actually even if I can't actually picture what I'm drawing I always end up with a good drawing but sometimes it's not enough for me so my tip for you (I guess) is that you can try really hard on trying to picture what you wanted to draw and draw many variatons of that because it would help you get an idea from those variations and once you feel like you are finished look through your drawing of variations and maybe get some of those variations abd put them to your final drawing. That's all I really just wanted to help some people that are having trouble with drawing.

Nothing makes me feel better than when I hear accomplished artists say things like "its hard for me" or "not going to sit down and just be good". The comparison of creating ideas to practicing processes such as shooting a freethrow is such a hit home. I spend a large amount of time creating art. I love about 1/4 pieces. Meaning, for me, I end up hating 3/4 things I make. I can only focus on the 'negative self talk' based on things I see. Such as wow, the eye isn't perfectly in perspective, or why did I draw the thumb that way, why did I place him that far left in the panel... but then hearing that a professional accomplished artist (who has clearly done it more than me) struggles.... Its a wave of relief. Of relief that maybe when people mention they like my art they aren't just being nice. I have the negative self talk in absolute overdrive and know its something I need to tame. How better to tame it than to increase my frequency of creating, and add a better streamlined process such as this. I love this process thank you so much.

11:02 what does he mean by this? If your :starting point: is abstract and you see a girl, puppet, or Swamp thing in your shapes, you can pursue that. From there, like the video brings out, you can use reference to direct the design. I felt the lesson reinforced this method to find designs in/ from starting from notions from Shape.
@calebclendenin7073
Жыл бұрын
I think what he means is that if you are making concept art and have a vague end goal like „carnivorous reptile“ or „fish monster“, you can pursue those vague destinations easily with abstract shapes. But a girl or wizard or things like that usually have a very narrow field of what qualifies and looks like that. In concept art, you‘re not just doodling a ton of stuff and looking for just anything out of those shapes. You have a goal. It may be extremely vague like „large predator“ but there is a goal you‘re working toward. It‘s not like the ink blot test where you‘re looking for just anything in the shapes.

When moving to the mid-tone grey then applying the darker shades, Scott how do you only fill value on the mid-tone [@24:09] abstract and not brush over the edge. I am sure I should know how to do this but for the life of me I am not sure what I am missing in that step? Also do you place your values on different layers or work 1 layer for the rest of the development?

Id like to ask about his thoughts on expressions in eyes and stuff, I heard him say he was going to push the eyes on some of the creatures. When he did that i guess i saw some different expressions in the eyes. i percieved these to have expressions or some sort of emotion and i didnt know if this style of art kind of just didnt acknowledge those things. If it was supposed to be an animal with eyes that were just angular and not expressional in his mind. Does anybody know anything about this?

So it seems you're saying the opposite of something I heard the other day about drawing humans. Another concept artist on youtube (I'm sorry I don't remember his name, please don't fire me) said that you don't need to be good at drawing people as a concept artist because humans have already been designed, and your job as a concept artist is to design. You are saying that being great at drawing people helps because virtually everything you need concept art for will involve people. I find this an interesting point.
