First time to race, and you won? That's pretty impressive considering Cat 4 or cat D, has many strong people, and even higher cats racers returning to racing to get a boost on their egos.

this is an old vid...but you know what it is one of the best out there and i hope to god that it never gets pulled down, it shows you all the basics of racing in a pack, admittedly it's on laps and does differ slightly to an open road race were the terrain changes, other than that you can't go wrong if you have never raced before this is a great starter to make you aware of what to expect.

Thanks for producing this! When i put my name on the cup in 1985 I think it was, it was one of my biggest road wins to-date. I loved the course which suited me perfectly as track rider, and Dale Brown always made it a really enjoyable weekend. I think I still have some silverware out in the garage from that day. Good luck in your races. It's all in the timing!

This is an excellent intro to pack racing, thanks to you, your camera and youtube, novice bike racers can actually learn pack racing before they're in it. It might've saved me getting dropped my first 10 races back in the 80s.

Before I started my first serious crit, a friend sent me a link to your video. Even though I have around 5 years of sports car racing experience, I learned some very helpful tips from this video. Within one season, I went from getting dropped to being ranked second in the state thanks to your help. You know what you're doing, you just need the fitness. There's a lot of free training information posted in my blog which could be useful to your training. Hope you find it useful!

yes i agree nice video. looking at my first crit this weekend. you navigate easily - are you yelling "coming left/right" or anything like that?
@catupdotcom
10 жыл бұрын
It's pretty rare that someone does that when passing someone else, but if it makes you feel more comfortable, there's nothing wrong with it either. However, when changing lines, you do have a responsibility to the riders behind you, both those riding with you and those passing you. A simple hand signal is usually sufficient or just move over slowly enough that everyone behind has plenty of time to react.

Never say never. Few people can comfortably stay in the drops the entire race. If you force yourself to dogmatically follow some rule like that you're gonna make mistakes. You do certainly want to be in the drops whenever riders are tightly packed, hairy corners, sprinting, or any situation requiring concentration on handling skills.

Most folks say it's one of their favorite courses, and I would definitely agree. There were some pretty bad pot-holes that year though. It's actually not especially dangerous at all. Some of the riders on the other hand....

They caught him. The guy in white and pink at 8:24 wins it. Incredibly the guy in yellow and black who led the whole back stretch took 2nd. I could barely hold his wheel. I posted a reply in here somewhere with the web address of the results you can match against bib numbers, or google "usa cycling 39th carolina cup." Thanks for watching.
@catupdotcom
12 жыл бұрын
At 8:55 I tried to follow a wheel but just had nothing left. I wouldn't call it a sprint and I certainly wasn't going for the line from that far back. If I had stayed where I was I might have been able to hold that position, so in a sense, you're right. When you race often enough you get a better idea of what you're capable of. But still, it's probably not a good idea to be too conservative that late in the game.

He got 15th. It was a great move though. Even more amazingly, the guy in black and yellow who pulled the entire back stretch still managed 2nd. The winner was #363- I think the 2nd guy to pass us up the hill at 8:24 in the white kit with pink stripes. KZitem won't let me put links in comments but you can find results on or google "usa cycling 39th Carolina cup"

I've done a few casual crits but am just about to start collegiate racing and this was very helpfull for some strategic ideas. Although, I feel it is . I'm going to film my races and upload them and ask for criticism. If someone with more experience wants to give me advice let me know.

YOu're right, I wasn't strong enough, but racing's about more than that. This video is to help you make the most of whatever fitness you have. I regularly struggle on local group rides with rec riders and cat 4's, yet somehow I can randomly show up at any Cat 3 or masters race after years of no racing and put my self in position to win EVERY SINGLE TIME. Clearly I must be on to something and I'm trying to pass some of it on to you. For free. BTW, I put my money where my name is: catup.com
