Clearcombat, I don't know how many real fights and confrontations you have had, I can only speak from my own experience. I've had hundreds of violent encounters in my life, involving fists, knives and guns. It's my job, I'm not a psychopath. All I will say to you is that I have trained with Tony and his teachings have literally saved my life. The only time I broke my hand was when nailing someone with a closed fist. Never when using an open hand

Weekend warriors always want to put their two cents in. Ever watch Vale Tudo? No hand protection and most types of strikes are allowed. What did those guys do? Open hand strikes because they don't want to break their knuckles. This is a surprisingly difficult concept to understand for internet martial arts "masters". Pretty cool that you've trained with Tony, I just discovered his youtube videos today and they're really interesting.

I haven't had the pleasure to train with Tony, but I am an avid reader and watcher of anything he publishes since years. I have trained some Combatives with European experts and they also advocate palm strikes, slaps as offensive tools. See for instance Mick Coup, Lee Morrison in the UK. Peace.

Tony Blauer has been wrestling, boxing, and studying TKD as well as many other arts since he was 13 years old. He developed several self-defense and hand-to-hand combat systems over the years. One of them includes The S.P.E.A.R. System which has been adopted by several militaries worldwide . He knows what he's talking about.

Tony Blauer is a Crossfit fan/practitioner and, like a smart business person, has parlayed his Crossfit connections into furthering his business and his passion of teaching self defense. I am a police use of force instructor and have attended hundreds of hours of Blauer's S.P.E.A.R. classes. My line of work often involves 'real fights/street fights' rather than sport/UFC fights. That is what his S.P.E.A.R./PDR [personal defense readiness] courses are all about, not karate matches or ju-jitsu matches in a doju and they are excellent. He is not advocating fighting...quite the opposite, he advocates avoiding a fight, but if you can't, be ready for one. This guy knows what he is doing, he has trained UFC fighters, and his High Gear is the predominant training gear for martial arts/combatives.

Crossfit is non-specialization fitness (Not just exercise). Are you saying there is no fitness at all in self defense? And Paul Maddock does make a fine comment to exemplify what you see as the "problem". But Tony DOES teach Crossfit (As well as self defense), but the adaptation occurs between the ears. Look at his fear loop seminar, for example. Crossfit may have started out with just a method of exercise but has quickly grown into something more.

I think smaller women and men should avoid punching to the face. Palming and eye-poking is great. The real money, though is in punching or blading the neck. Could be front, sides or back of the neck. If your life is on the line, then hit them as hard as you can in the neck until they go down, and then exit safely. However, larger and stronger men and women should know how to punch the face correctly, because a knockout punch is invaluable if you can throw it.

great, it really shows in this 4 min video on a channel dedicated to crossfit... oh wait no it doesn't. crossfit has suddenly entered a phase of aggressive expansion, what with it's rising popularity, videos, and new competition aspects. that's great and all, but dipping it's toe into something different that has so much depth is just like saying, "hey, you got crossfit it covers everything you need!" making martial arts a side-dish

I agree with the others: Seld defense and martial arts are another world from crossfit, it has nothing to do with it. It's ok if you want to give them a krav maga class (this looks alot to krav maga system) but dont claim it like "Crossfit defense".

It'd be better to just apply regular boxing techniques with a palm strike instead of a closed fist. Bas Rutten did this with great effect in Pancrase. Something I've noticed is very little of his techniques ever have the attacker reacting to your actions. This is just extremely unrealistic. I also very much dislike his dis on boxing. They only land the 1-2, because of the pads. Well, don't you think that boxers spar as well. The entire purpose of training that combination is to landed it in a real fight scenario. It works. Anyone with any boxing experience has landed a flush 1-2 in sparring. Also, him recommending you wait a second after landing the first strike is a ridiculous concept. You need to take action once you've done this, because this is your chance to either follow up to do as much damage as possible or even flee. The hesitation he suggest will only give the attacker an opportunity to recover and attack you. Also, it's not like your strike must land to the face in a street fight. Ever hear of the groin, solar plexus, or liver? All vital areas that can be struck to the body. Basically, I think people need to quit looking for someone to come to their crossfit box to give them a one off self-defense lesson. How about you actually learn a martial art? If you have the time and money for your crossfit you have it for MMA or another martial art too. Learning those and genuinely training them will be 10000xs more effective. Something I've believed my entire experience with martial arts. You must actually practice it by sparring. If you've never sparred, you don't know anything. Get to a gym, learn the techniques, and spar.

So you say "either CF, or MA, pick one". Then you say "Maybe a little MA". Then you say "beginners should stay out of trouble." Then you say "Experts should stay out of trouble." My response: do both, do everything, always stay out of trouble... If I went to a one hour cooking class do you think a Chef would come on youtube and say "this is stupid you can't learn to cook in an hour"? That is OBVIOUS to everyone with a little self-confidence

Everyone with the complaint that CF should stick with exercise, you haven't exactly explained what your problem is. Lots of businesses expand. Look at google. What was a search engine is not maps, android, books and music. No one said Google should stick with search engines. Martial arts has to do with fitness. So does parkour (This is offered at my box). I don't see an adequate reason why CrossFit can't teach these things.

Maybe it's just me but I can't help but detect something sinister about the whole Crossfit movement. First came the simple programs that 'anyone' can do, then the competitons that get more grueling, now these self defense classes in Krav Maga etc., then you look at the catchment areas - Mid West & Southern U.S. states; places were the 2nd Amendment is held dear, also a strong ex-forces element - like they're gearing up for something.. I dunno, just seems a bit 'Jungvolk' to me..

"hand is quicker than the brain" err ok... these crossfit people will leave this class with a deluded sense of their own ability. The best self defense for many situations is the ability to run fast and get the hell out of a confrontation. Striking and fighting skills take years to perfect.
@alppine7549
7 жыл бұрын
Striking does NOT take years to perfect...in ww2 the total training time for SOE / OSS and commandos to learn H2h was measured in HOURS...fairbairn taught striking because it's simple to learn and rather instinctive for most people to hit scary stuff..... I agree running away is a good idea, but your dead wrong that learning to hit effectively takes years....esp with the palm strike which is far less like to cause hand damage then punching which does take some time to learn

depth. the problem is depth, should be obvious. great use of a false analogy. crossfit is a system of exercise (and is not confused with cross-training), not a business. it has taken on a common definition by its type of exercise not an institution whose purpose it is to make money. this is a self-defense class, not crossfit training. it will not make you do more clean-and-jerks. Paul Maddocks's comment implies the problem in a simple way.

The top comment is born of arrogance or jealousy, not of any logical or rational reasoning. Do you row at your CrossFit gym? Please don't. Leave rowing to the rowers.. Do you clean and jerk or snatch at your CrossFit gym? Again, that's only for olympic lifters. Do you sprint at all? Leave that to the track and field folks. Bike in your spare time? Not anymore. Can you see how ridiculous this is? Let people try everything. That's probably how you began 35 years ago... by TRYing it.
