Meet Clara Kamlomo, a young horticulturist and passionate farmer who believes agriculture is a way to go. She studied for a Diploma in Horticulture at Natural Resources College, after which she stayed for a year doing odd jobs. Through small businesses she raised enough money to buy her first acre of land, and then another, she kept adding until now when she has close to 10 acres of land.
Clara is into all kinds of farming: pigs, vegetables, bee keeping, fish, mushrooms and the like. She admits it hasn’t been easy to do farming as a young person but things are looking up and she has now moved to stay at her farm, deep in the villages around Chinkhowe Village in TA Chiseka’s area in Lilongwe.
She has received recognition and support, mostly from individuals and organisations like International Labour Organisation which is setting up a multi-million kwacha irrigation plant at her farm which will also be used as a training ground for young and up-coming farmers. She decries limited government support which she says is a critical player in ensuring agricultural mechanisation is achieved.
