I have been on selegiline 5mg 2 tablets orally twice daily (so 20mg) for about 8 years. A medical doctor who specialized in holistic medicine suggested I ask my doctor to try it. I remember he felt it would help my particular condition (basically depression caused when quitting a particular drug). My doctor was willing to try it. I have had to switch doctors a couple times through the years for various reasons, and each time they have been hesitant to prescribe it, but have after performing a thorough assessment, they have. Coincidentally, I spent a good portion of yesterday dealing with my new insurance because they only want to pay for 10mg per day. This happens every time I switch insurance plans, but it always gets worked out.

I went up to 12 mg and 24 mg Emsam with no success. I'm on 120 mg Tranylcypromine and it changed my life. Also, with lower dose Emsam (6 and 8 mg), it's selective for MAO-B so you can still consume foods with tyramine until you get to higher doses.

This is true, it would take a substantial amount of tyramine to increase blood pressure at the 6 mg/24 hr dose. I agree with you that I would prefer to use other MAOIs and not Emsam. The people that I have had on it have not had impressive results. I appreciate the comment, and please subscribe if you haven't already and spread the word about what we are doing here.

I’ve tried all ssris and snris, I’m only 17 I can’t stress enough about the TCA roulette and so many pills to try should I jump to MAOIS or have a look round TCAS and other unspecific antidepressants

@@oscarwilliam015 It's a difficult question to answer in this setting because I do not know nearly enough about the case. What i can say in general is I think MAOIs are more effective than TCAs. They both require caution and in people under the age of 18 there is not much research on the topic of MAOIs and TCAs to support a decision. I would talk about the pros and cons with your doctor and make an informed decision about the further care. I hope the video was helpful and if you haven't subscribed to the channel please do and spread the word about what we are doing here.

The patch definitely has different effects on certain folks. Incredibly useful and difficult to source.

He may of had an anxiety disorder or bad depression..,MAOIs are used for depression and anxiety when other options have failed. Trouble is they all cause insomnia which is their number one worse side effect. I had to come of Nardil which wiped out my anxiety with an hour of a 15mg pill. The insomnia was absolutely horrific even with z drugs. The dietary restrictions are exaggerated and easy to follow. Interesting fact: Marilyn Monroe was prescribed parnate for depression shortly before her death. She already suffered severe insomnia. If her experience was anything like mine I’m 💯 sure the Parnate made her insomnia absolutely unmanageable which led to her overdosing on barbiturates. I remember forgetting how many sleeping pills I took in an effort to knock myself out so I could see how the MAOI Parnate was the catalyst for death,

Not true for everyone, Nardil cured my insomnia, I never slept better at night.

@@Kingboo1081 well you are lucky as hell. Nardil was the only medication that worked for me but the insomnia side effect was unmanageable.

Hey doc, is Selegiline known for withdrawal? I took 10mg orally daily for just under 2 weeks, so a pretty low dose. I stopped a week ago and I’ve felt extremely crappy recently , and I suspect this might be why?

Imsomnia kills the cognitive improvements from depression for many. 12 years of experience from 6 to 12 mg. Anyone else using it for 12 years?

It disappoints me when, during any discussion regarding the clinical use of MAOIs, that few mention the fact that phenelzine, in addition to being an irreversible monamine oxidase inhibitor, also increases GABA transaminase and other neurotransmitters, resulting in increased GABA function, and is a supremely effective treatment for at least some incapacitating anxiety conditions.

Why do psychiatric medications take so long to work if the actual medicine is effective on the cells immediately once in the bloodstream? Also, why don't doctors test your neurotransmitter levels in the brain, THEN decide what medicine you need? Instead of the dart board method?

They can't test your neurotransmitter levels in your brain.

Because the latest thinking is because increasing neurotransmitters doesn’t help depression, it creates an environment conducive to your neurons forming new connections and that’s what actually works. No one tests neurotransmitters because what’s too low for one person might me too high for another and just right for someone else…plus insurance probably wouldn’t cover the hundreds to do it. There is a genetic test that can determine statistically which meds are most likely to help but again, good luck getting insurance to pay $1000 for it.
