NOTE: For the month of March 2024, I will be uploading footage I recorded during the 2023 shipping season but haven't previously posted. Early in the shipping season, I made the decision to reserve some video clips so we would all have something to enjoy during the off-season while we wait for ships to return to action. If you haven't seen it already, I recently posted my video showing the highlights of the 2023 shipping season. It can be viewed here: • 35 Great Lakes Freight...
Here is the CSL Tadoussac seen arriving in Superior, Wisconsin on the morning of July 6, 2023. She was arriving empty after having sat at anchor, waiting for her time to load after the departure of the Tim S. Dool. She would load taconite pellets at the Burlington Northern dock for eventual delivery to Nanticoke, Ontario. As the Tadoussac pulls up to the BN dock, I zoomed in to catch footage of crew members riding the bosun's chair down to the dock. The ship sends crew members down to the dock to help secure the lines. Once docked, a ladder or stairs are extended down to the dock to let other crew members on and off the ship.
The CSL Tadoussac in one of only two classic front-end pilot house lakers still sailing for Canada Steamship Lines, with the other being the Frontenac. The past two decades have seen a tremendous decline in classic lakers in general on the Canadian side, as the fleets modernize to more fuel efficient vessels. The other large Canadian fleet, Algoma Central only has the John D. Leitch as their last classic lake freighter... and word on the street is that 2024 may be her last season. Lower Lakes Towing still has the Michipicoten, Saginaw, and Cuyahoga as their remaining classic ships, but a recent fire aboard the Cuyahoga has put her future in jeopardy as well. If you're a fan of the classic laker design, now is the time to catch these ships while you still can! (Note: There are nine classic lakers still in service with the American fleets.)
The 730-foot CSL Tadoussac was launched in 1969 and is powered by a single 6-cylinder 9,600 b.h.p. Sulzer model 6RND76 diesel engine. She was the last laker built for Canada Steamship Lines with the classic forward-mounted pilot house and is one of only two classic-style lakers still sailing for CSL today (with the other being the Frontenac). In the year 2000, the Tadoussac's center section was rebuilt and widened, along with a rebuild of her self-unloading system. This rebuild gave her a "bulge" in the hull close to the waterline. The rebuilt unloading system featured a covered single tunnel belt, remotely operated gates, and a comprehensive dust suppression system. She currently has a the capacity to haul 30,051 tons of ore at a mid-summer draft of 28 feet 3 inches.
