Even though I wasn't born yet, this still feels nostalgic, like I've been there before

I suspect there weren’t many places with B&O and L&N signals at one interlocking. I visited Mitchell a few times when both lines were active, and I’m glad I did.

Mitchell always seemed busy in the rally and mid 1990s. Great place to railfan. The Monon might have put up those searchlight signals as the crossing wasn’t interlocked until 1947-48 believe it or not. 😮

Ahh. Such great memories here. I had some of this footage on VHS a long time ago. Some of it was taped after 08/08/1993 as there are trains transferring to the B&O after traversing the Monon and vice versa. Q686/687, Q564/565, and R566/553 were the six trains that did this along with assorted extras. I hope so see the footage west of Mitchell soon. Thanks for sharing this with us 😎

20:38 I've never seen a Chessie unit with the B&O showing through. It's almost like they never painted the orange stripe on it.

That’s a cool unit indeed. Heading west into Willow Valley Tunnel near milepost 142.

Where is the train at 9:53 going to and from. It looks like there are 2 diverging tracks in the video

That train came up the Monon northbound from Louisville, then was pulled backward around the connection at Mitchell so it could head west to East Saint Louis. The “pusher” engine job was J700. The diverging track you see from the lead engine’s light at the end is the south end of Mitchell siding on the Monon.

In Indiana the only portion that's out of service is between Mitchell and Washington.

The preferred route between cincy and st Louis Is via Indianapolis due to more traffic and interchange at Avon yard
