Never underestimate Cuban mechanical ingenuity. If a time traveler from a thousand years in the future came back and told me these things were still in service in their time, I would not be surprised.

Looks like a steam lovers paradise! Especially loved the scene at night. Very beautiful steam locomotive.

Yes it was. That is why the small group I travelled with was called Steam in Paradise. Great steam action, friendly people and enough nightlife to keep you up till dawn if you could stand the pace!

I must say all your videos are a pleasure to watch, you have been very lucky in catching the 'last' of the few, (to coin a phrase). I missed all the great inter-urbans in the US and the 'logging' lines all over the world, now I'm retired and can afford to visit these places they are all gone. Apart from trams which a lot of towns and cities are realising they should not have got rid of and are rapidly re-introducing them and calling it 'forward thinking. I have always wondered if the 'steam loco' couldn't have been improved with a little more experimenting, - after all the "flash boiler" has been around for a long time. Or was it more a case of the 'diesel lobby' was just too powerful at the time, - (backed by the likes of EMD, GE, and the oil industry who seem to think nothing of spending billions to get their way). Plus of course Dr. Beeching who did more to wreck a Countries rail network than any other person I can think of in history.

Beautiful George. Loved the footplate ride, especially! Night shots also a special. Did you see my two of "Leander" going over Shap this weekend? Returning it was nearly dark, so some lovely firebox glints!

No way! The US still enforces a wicked and totally inexplicable trade embargo against Cuba. Remove the trade embargo and you might be able to repatriate a few locos.

@@blackthorne57 I totally agree it is ridiculous that 'embargo'. The trouble with a lot of Americans is they seem to think that they can 'dictate' other Countries policies. Lets see them get their 'house' in order first, - (especially after the 'laughing stock' which Trump and his 'followers' made to the World of the last Presidential election). Then people might just start to take them seriously, until then, well..........

Excellent video, - well done. I'm a little surprised the loco that was slipping did not have auto sanding - being slightly ignorant of the finer points of loco operation, what was the chap standing on the top of the boiler doing,? - I noticed the one in front sanding the rails. I'm surprised at them being forward thinking enough to build a steam museum, are any operational or are the loco's just sort of parked in the shed they operated out of and someone had the idea to charge to look at them.

You have almost answered your question. The chap on top of the boiler is by the 'sand dome'. He was trying to get the sand flowing. Cuba is a tropical island and can become a bit humid. Although the sand would have been poured in dry it may have become a little damp and clogged the pipe. There are several steam/sugar mill museums in Cuba. Most just have non-running exhibits. The best chance of seeing preserved steam in operation is to join a rail enthusiasts tour that includes charters.

I thought that was the sand dome - I just couldn't understand what he might be doing up their. My interest in steam is only in 'working' stuff, - alas now extremely thin on the ground. I am not decrying the preservation movement one bit. Although for one who has enjoyed the days of 'roaming the rails' behind nothing but steam. I'm sorry I just don't see the 'beauty' in tearing along behind a diesel or electric. I know it's called 'progress' but sometimes I wonder if it is all for the better - give me a 9f any-day or an O&K with mud holding the smoke-box door on in Java and I would be in heaven.

I totally agree. My Cuba 1999 series of videos are all real working steam locos, even the few clean ones!
