GREAT BUILD Love that engine! Had the GL500 Interstate and actually enjoyed it more than my Goldwing! ALL of them were designed for turbocharging and are bulletproof! FYI - The only problem was after sitting unused for a long time (I bought a leftover), the water pump seal will dry out and mine leaked from the weep hole.

Awesome build! Longer forks may be a bit wobbly without a good strong fork brace, ex\specially with a single disk on the front - that will want to twist the forks under braking.
@BrickHouseBuilds

It will get a brace don't worry. Just mocking them up and a bit later I will fabricate a brace or brace/low fender combo. Again these are 2mm larger than stock so I cant see why they wouldn't be stronger than original.

Man, I love your builds. You seriously are a top-tier builder. Your videos are so informative. I hate to bother you because I know you're very busy. The only question I have is with the rear shocks. They seem to be exactly what I need to level out my cx500 build. I'm just curious as to to the drive shaft u-joint tolerance. You seem to be on top of everything you do and I imagine it shouldn't be a problem, to increase the height to this degree.
@BrickHouseBuilds
Жыл бұрын
Thank you. As far as the driveshaft angle that question gets asked so often and I'm not sure why people worry about it do much to be honest. Its such a minimal angle change there will be absolutely zero issue. Sure if you put extreme length shocks on you actually run the risk of swingarm to driveshaft yoke interference but nothing even remotely close to this.

So no need for a custom steering stem? Are most swaps this simple? Is it just the GSXR swaps that require all the extra hardware and parts?
@BrickHouseBuilds
Жыл бұрын
Most swaps just require a set of bearings to physically fit onto the bike. Being that this stem had a similar design and was from the same era I didn't need to modify nearly anything. You must understand that when using a modern fork there will never be a bolt-on option and you will always need to do modifications. Here is a link to a helpful article specific to the CX/GL platform. motofaction.org/motorcycles/honda-cx-gl/cx500-fork-swap-database/

Awesome man, looking forward to this. Are you going to drop the forks in the triples a bit to give it a more aggressive stance or are you going for ground clearance?
@BrickHouseBuilds

Do those CX's have any power? I suspect they are more like cruisers, lacking that exhilarating acceleration I like to have. Of the 3 bikes I owned, only one was fast. A '72 Suzuki GT550 triple. It was a copy of the Kawasaki 500. 2 cycle, so it would really wind up. The next two were V twins and both lackluster. So I won't make that mistake again. I suspect to get some real power in a 4 stroke, at least a 900cc is needed. Like that Suzuki Bandit you had that had, that had the title issue, and unfortunately had to go away.
@BrickHouseBuilds
3 жыл бұрын
I think to answer that you have to consider your expectations. Don't expect a sportster or dyna to feel like a lightweight 2 stroke. Don't expect a CX500 to feel like an Africa Twin. Dont expect a YZ125 to have the highway capability of a GS1250. CX/GL bikes can be super fun if you don't expect the world from them. The fun a lot of times comes from making them something other than what they started as such as a cruiser. I'll be very curious how well I can make this perform as a real deal ADV bike when done. It won't be as good offroad as my KLR but can it get close?

Great build!! Im looking to do this setup on my 81 GL500. From what I can find it should be an identical swap, but I had a curious alternative. What do you think about boring the yoke on the GL to 37mm to fit the FT500 tubes? Do you happen to know the standard spacing of the FT500 lowers at the axle?
@BrickHouseBuilds
Жыл бұрын
Thank you. I do not know the spacing unfortunately. Something to consider with trying to use the GL trees would be your trail figures. The FT forks are leading axle where the GL isn't. The FT trees are designed to have the right trail with those legs so you must keep that in mind.
@mountainroamer5538

@BrickHouseBuilds thanks for the reply! My idea was to *attempt* to keep the stock steering lock, but the suspension travel is more important for me. So full swap it is. Thanks for the inspiration and great channel!

@@BrickHouseBuilds maybe I am wrong, but there are two pistons on one side of the disc, and they move the brake pad and the other pad is stationary. Shouldn't the disc be kissing the other pad for it to apply pressure? If there are four pistons, two on each side then the disc should be centered between them.

@@at906 well as the caliper floats on its slide pins it centers itself to the rotor. I have it set to the outside to get the caliper to clear the wheel. I need the caliper set as far to the outside as possible. Everything is based off the side of the caliper that will move the least
