To answer your question on those concrete things. I actually live a few miles south of Raymondville. If I would’ve seen your journey while you were doing it, I would’ve invited you to stay at my home, but those things are called “compuerta’s” in Spanish. It translates to gate, but I’m not sure of the proper name in English. Essentially, you twist the handle up top and it opens the water from the near by canal to allow water to flood the field for irrigation. I started watching from your zero day. I wasn’t sure what that meant at first thinking it was the day before you started your journey. Man instantly was hooked! I need to go back at and watch the first few videos.

I have not read down all your comments, but the question you ask regarding the stack culverts (Standpipe) are actually water values to control water flow in the irrigation system of this part of the south Texas area , you see them all throughout the rio grande valley. Some stacks are short and some are tall, depending on the elevation of where you happen to be. These irrigation systems and engineering go back to the Spaniard Days.

That's still a great trip. I am impressed that you could do that much, and am glad your wife was there to help you celebrate the end (or almost the end). Did you ever find out what those upright concrete pipes are? When you said you were 10 miles from Raymondville, you were about a mile north of where my great-grandfather "homesteaded" back in the 1920s (just west of Lasara). One of those pipes is on the corner of what was once his property, but I was never quite sure what those were, either. My great-grandfather was in his early 60s then, sold his farm in North Dakota (where he had homesteaded about 1902) and moved with his wife to Texas to grow citrus fruit. A couple of other people from his area moved to Texas, too, but they all went back to North Dakota about the time of the stock market crash. No citrus was being grown on that property when we visited a few years ago, and the house he built was taken down 30-40 years ago, but that standpipe (my term for it) was there.

Hi John. From what I understand these are some type of valve for an irrigation system. @@BluecollarBackcountry Tony, I did find your epilogue, but KZitem made me search for it. That was a good ending, except for your camera. Which model of Sony was it? It wasn't an FDR-X3000, was it? Did you ever get it replaced? When I saw how you take 10-15 years off your age when you get spruced up at your motel stops, I wished I hadn't said you are about as old as me. And then when I saw your young wife, I knew for sure that you weren't so old. Even though you are a relative youngster, that was still an impressive trek. I never did anything quite like that at your age. In 2015 when I was only a couple of years older than you are now I did a 350 mile ride into the wind to my birthplace home in North Dakota, but had only one day of brutal headwinds that probably weren't quite as bad as yours. ND isn't a lot like Texas, but they both have big skies and open prairies where the wind is free to blow. I did a 1000 mile ride each of the next two years, but not a lot was into the wind, and never anything like you had. Also, I stayed in motels every night. Also, my wife usually comes along by car. She goes off and does her own thing during the day and we get together at night, but I usually don't have to carry so much of a load except when I get a headstart of 2-3 days before she joins me. I haven't camped for several years, but am preparing to get back to some this year. Initial experiments have convinced me I haven't gotten too old to sleep on the ground. Thanks again for recording it all and making those videos for us to watch. Now I'm going to watch some of what you've made since then.

@@johngorentz6409 Yes it was the Sony FDR X3000. I love that camera. I've owned a few GoPro's but the reliability and sound of the Sony make me a fan. Michelle did get another one for me that Christmas. It sounds like you are no stranger to touring. Towards the end of March or the first of April, I plan to ride from El Paso to the easternmost part of Texas at the request of a few KZitem friends. That should be a fun tour and I will definitely go west to east and hopefully take advantage of the winds this time. Thank you so much and best of luck with your adventures in 2022.

I'd consider riding across a field or sneaking down a ditch. Being told to stay out, or a No Trespassing sign, is just a CYA for landowners or Musk-types to avoid liability lawsuits. But sometimes it is best not to play tag with Johnny Law. You win with an asterisk. Just like the Tampa Bay Lightning's Stanley Cup. 2020 has created a lot of asterisks in the record books. Nice to see that supermodel wife of yours again. So thoughtful on setting up the accommodations. She is a keeper! But then, you know that.

I gusset SpaceX is able to infuse enough money to the Brownsville economy that the county agreed in the beginning to close highway 48 to the beach any time they were testing rockets or doing a launch. From the roadblock it was about 17 miles to the beach and then 3 more to the confluence of the Rio Grande. A little far for a sprint and border patrol is everywhere down there as well as a border patrol checkpoint. I don't think sneaking I was an option. Well that was an engaging final chapter to your trip; Very impressive that you could piece this 1000+ mile route together through a part of the country that is not very conducive to this type of travel. Are those concrete tubes ventilation for a top-secret underground bunker system? jk; More likely that they are related to agriculture as others have commented. Way to drive a hard bargain; I've had innkeepers ask me to not book through discount lodging reservation systems so that they will not be obliged to pay their booking fees so in my view you did them a favor. Bummer about the SpaceX surprise; Do you plan to return and finish the last little bit at some point?
