This album was her reactions to losing love. She had broken up with her son's father, Andre 3000, of Outkast. This was her cleansing and it helped the rest of us deal with what was ailing us. In my case, an ugly divorce. Unfortunately (or fortunately) my adult children still know all the songs by heart. 😂

One part you missed at 22:46, "See, i be that gypsy flippin life game from the right brain" is connected to her then-lover, Andre 3000 of Outkast, and his line from the song "Rosa Parks" where he says, "I met a gypsy and she hipped me to some life game, to stimulate and activate the left and right brain." He was talking about Erykah. Dope reaction video, once again! Your Pops reaction to "Orange Moon" was what I was waiting for.

Bag Lady is so poignant as a (Black) woman, considering all the baggage (trauma) we carry around starting in girlhood. The music video more clearly gives examples of the type of baggage the Bag Lady carries around, but at its root the song it’s about how we hold onto our traumas to our detriment, and how healing through love (from someone else, yes, but mostly of ourselves) can make us better

James Poyser is a producer and multi-instrumentalist. He is most known for his work with the hip hop band, The Roots. He is also a member of the SoulAquarians. The SoulAquarians formed around the time when D’Angelo was working on his album Voodoo. During a recording session James Poyser, Jay Dee, Questlove and a few session musicians were talking and realized they all shared the same zodiac sign…hence the name “SoulAquarians”.
